I feel like all this talk of higher causes and whatnot is a tad counterproductive right now. If nothing else, I really don't give enough of a poo poo about what effects this will have elsewhere given that blowing up that diamond convoy will increase our profits and help the Count. If some rear end in a top hat in Britain has to pay an extra 500 pounds for their diamonds because of what we do here, I really don't care.

So: quit whining about it and let's try and figure out how to blow up a truck behind enemy lines. :v:

Since I've never tried doing one of these before, I'll formalize my plan as By The Numbers. This is, let's say, risky. I'm not sure even I'll vote for it. But it also gets us to use practically every aircraft we have and hopefully takes out all the objectives. Hopefully. If I've asked for something impossible please let me know, I only barely understand this game as it is! And I've completed a whole one of the tutorials!

Flight 1 - Matador
Composition/Loadouts
2x Sperwer UAV (N/A)
EMCON: N/A
WRA: N/A
Orders: Follow displayed patrol paths "S1" and "S2" in the hopes they can spot the S300.
These probably aren't coming home. But there's no pesky "people" in them complaining about "dying" so hopefully this is okay. I'm willing to trade these for breaking the dictator's fanciest toys. If by some miracle they spot the S300 and aren't immediately vaporized, hold there and RTB once the S300 is destroyed. Remain low to the ground so they're more likely to die to a SAM than to enemy fighters.

Flight 2 - Pridebreaker
Composition
1x Prowler (1x HARM, 4x Jammer)
1x Tornado (2x HARM)
1x Tornado (2x Taurus KEPD, 2x IRIS)
2x Gripen (8x SDB, 2x IRIS)
4x Gripen (4x Meteor, 2x IRIS)
EMCON: Everything on once we cross the border. The entire point is to attract that S300's attention, so let's make some noise.
WRA: See below for when to launch; when conditions are met, "Eat My gently caress" aka just launch everything and bail for the anti-ground munitions. The CAP Gripens should be on one Meteor per hostile.
Orders: Launch once the Sperwers cross the border. Fly up the middle via "P" and hope that the Sperwers find the S300 first. Remain within the Prowler's jamming cover at all times; hold everybody back if the CAP Gripens need to clear the skies. Divert to the S300 once spotted. Fire the Tauruses at ~100nm. Once they're in the air, close to SDB range, fire them, and then immediately fire the HARMs. This odd launch order is to hope the S300 fires its missiles at the Tauruses and then has to decide whether to keep the FCR on and get HARMed or shut it off and waste its missiles that are already in flight, assuming the earlier intel about it being SARH is accurate. And hopefully 16 SDBs means at least some of them get through the Tunguska CIWS. The Prowler should remain in the air to be reassigned to Avarice later. Do not let the Prowler fall behind CAP when retreating. Under no circumstances proceed below 30,000 feet in hostile airspace.

Flight 3 - Angel
Composition
2x Gripen (4x Meteor, 2x IRIS)
2x Phantom (4x AMRAAM, 4x Sidewinder)
4x Phantom (2x GBU-24, 2x AMRAAM)
2x Frogfoot (8x FAB500, 2x R60)
6x SK60 (Rockets)
1x MQ-9 (Gorgon Stare)
EMCON: Silent unless required for a firing solution or spiked.
WRA: One bomb/missile per target, except the Frogfoots should be set to 2 bombs per.
Orders: Launch the MQ9 towards the border but keep it behind our lines at Angel until the rest of Angel gets there. Launch the rest once the S300 is confirmed destroyed and/or all of Pridebreaker Winchesters. Proceed to the front and engage targets of opportunity. If time permits, RTB for quick-turnaround rearm and do it again. Do not remain at the front if all 6 CAP aircraft Winchester. Once CAP reports no air contacts between here and the diamond convoy, reassign the MQ-9 and Prowler to Avarice.

Flight 4 - Avarice
Composition
1x MQ-9 (Gorgon Stare)
2x Hawk (2x Maverick, 2x Sidewinder)
1x Prowler (4x Jammer) (as it should have fired the HARM)
2x Phantom (4x AMRAAM, 4x Sidewinder)
EMCON: Silent unless required for a firing solution or spiked except Prowler; Prowler all on.
WRA: Two AMRAAMs per hostile aircraft, one maverick per hostile ground target.
Orders: Let the MQ-9 spot the convoy. Hopefully it's just one or two trucks (how big can a diamond haul possibly be?), in which case the Hawks can take it out from a reasonable range. RTB immediately on confirmation of destruction. The Prowler's just here in case some rear end in a top hat with a 23/4 or an Osa spots us. Do not let the Prowler fall behind CAP when retreating.

Flight 5 - Overseer
Composition
1x S100B (N/A)
1x KC-135 (N/A)
1x VC10 (N/A)
EMCON: All on.
WRA: N/A
Orders: You guys know the drill by now as far as "lazily fly in circles for a few hours" goes. Don't launch the VC10 unless Big Pig runs out of pig juice. Maintain position at Overseer until everybody's done.

e: BTW Mr. Thighs the intention was never for it to be a suicide mission; the hope was by the time we got there the others would have cleared everything out. But upon thinking about it Mavericks are basically the ideal for this task, so you get lucky.

If people are talking about the moral high ground thrn that is cool and good and an extra element to play with.

But are you really arguing that helping a self-installed dictator (who likes military dress up) to profit is the Right Thing To Do? The one notorious for smashing aid convoys? I mean I know diamond mining isn't fun and de Beers probably don't have clean hands themselves, but compared to the human rights abuses the dictator is likely dealing out to miners - who let's face it are probably slaves made from his political opponents - I say we cut off this rear end in a top hat's cashflow, de Beers being the lesser of two evils.

de Beers wants the convoy destroyed because the Dictator is dropping the price on diamonds by increasing the supply. In this regard he is actually doing a good thing (breaking the cartel through a loss in their profit margin), and if we're going to shy away from cluster munitions because "its the right thing to do" then we should let him keep making diamonds cheaper. Its the moral thing to do.

You can't. Cluster bombs don't affect sub-surface targets.

However, there are nuclear depth charges in the armory...and whales exist in the editor (along with schools of fish), mostly intended as false targets for sub-hunting scenarios. So while you can't cluster bomb the whales, you can nuke them.

That S-300 is really scary. As far as I'm concerned, there are two and only two ways to deal with it:

1. A fully committed strike with multiple aircraft.
2. Drawing a no-navigation zone with radius of 100 nautical miles around it.

This sub-proposal deals with the first.

Sub-proposal: "Falafel Ranger." (S-300 Strike)

I'm drawing this up as a sub-proposal. Any plan is free to include this sup-proposal as a component of their plan. (In fact, this sub-proposal is incomplete, and relies on other plans including it.) I don't even include an air escort for this sub-plan.

I'm not including the MQ-9 Reaper because the S-300 outranges its visual recon and it's too slow to keep up with the other planes. That's why I'm going suicide mission with the other UAV.

Discovering the exact coordinates of the S-300 is vital for mission success. The SDBs can't even be launched unless they have an exact target with no ambiguity. If the first Sperwer UAV is shot down before it completes its mission, the second UAV may be sent along a different path. :siren: If the exact GPS coordinates of the SAM site cannot be discovered (such as both Sperwer UAVs are shot down and no other intelligence assets are available), the entire sub-plan is scrubbed, :siren: and all surviving assets may then be seconded to the other ongoing missions.

Included Platforms:
1x Sperwer UAV
1x EA-6B Prowler
1x Tornado IDS
2x JAS 39C Gripen

1x Sperwer UAV, "Weekend Wrapper"
Precise GPS coordinates are needed to launch small diameter glide bombs at the target. If we had good satellite or ground intel we could have used that, but we have to make do. We'll send out the UAV on a one-way recon mission to get fix needed to strike the target.
Mission:
1.Recon the S-300 in order to determine its precise GPS coordinates.
2. Accomplish the recon mission at all costs. Do not RTB when bingo unless the recon mission is already complete.
Flight Plan:
1. If forward truck-based deployment is available, use that to stage close to the front line: https://wiki.baloogancampaign.com/index.php/DataFacility?ID=483. Otherwise, loiter at a convenient location.
2. Wait until ELINT discovers the approximate location of the S-300 site.
3. Attempt to gain visual recon of the SAM site. Fly at minimum altitude. Avoid all locations of known hostile units. Use terrain masking if geography permits.
4. This is a one-way trip if necessary. Do not RTB on bingo fuel unless the target's precise location has been fully determined.
Extra:
Discovering the exact coordinates of the S-300 is vital for mission success. If the first Sperwer UAV is shot down before it completes its mission, the second UAV may be sent along a different path. If the exact GPS coordinates of the SAM site cannot be discovered (such as both Sperwer UAVs are shot down and no other intelligence assets are available), the entire sub-plan is scrubbed.

1x EA-6B Prowler, "Jam Sandwich"
Loadout: AGM-88 HARM, Short range (1x AGM-99, 4x OECM Pods)
Mission:
1. Provide offensive ECM escort to the strike package to the S-300.
2. Fire off carried HARM at the S-300 site to force expenditure of munitions.
Flight Plan:
1. Loiter near tanker assets.
2. Wait until "Weekend Wrapper" UAV discovers precise coordinates of the S-300 site.
3. Top off fuel tanks before proceeding with mission.
4. Select an appropriate ingress vector, and proceed with mission.
5. Ingress at military power (520 knots).
6. At maximum weapons range from target (70 nmi), fire off anti-radiation missile at the S-300 site.
7. Continue to provide OECM support for strike package on further ingress and egress.

1x Tornado IDS, "Gooseberry."
Loadout: AGM-88 HARM. (2x HARM, 2x IRIS-T, DECM Pod, 2x Drop Tank)
Mission:
6. At maximum weapons range from target (70 nmi), fire off anti-radiation missiles at the S-300 site.
7. Egress along the SAM-Prowler bearing that's covered by OECM.

2x JAS 39C Gripen, "Binge Eater."
Loadout: GBU-39 SDB, Long Range (8x GBU-39 SDB, 2x IRIS-T, 1x Litening III Pod, 3x Drop Tank)
1. Destroy the S-300 site by overloading its defense capability.
6. At maximum weapons range from target (60 nmi), fire off all available munitions at the S-300 site as quickly as possible. (Yooper, I think you need to use Shift-F1 to manually force them to launch all their SDBs.)
7. Egress along the SAM-Prowler bearing that's covered by OECM.

Operation: I love War Crimes

Battle Map:

Operation:

1) The MQ-9 Reaper and both Sperwer UAVs begin deployed in positions above or near to the 3rd,5th and 19th regiments at a high enough attitude where they can observe the Bulgarian advance and the Dictators air defenses. Special attention is to be given to spotting the S-300 battery.

2) The 6 Saab SK60Bs take off from Lubango loaded with 145mm rockets and are to follow path D heading east and then north towards the highlighted enemy airfield. Their mission is to make it appear they are attempting to bomb the enemy airfield and cause as much damage as possible. The SK60s are to continue following the D path until enemy air elements vector towards them after allowing the enemy to approach but not enter weapons range they are to abort and return to Lubango at safest speed and heading. Their entire purpose is to attempt to draw enemy air elements to them, if this strike fails to raw enemy attention and if by chance enemy air defenses are non-existent at the enemy airfield go ahead and rocket it. In the more likely scenario this isn't the case and they don't draw attention then attempt to rocket enemy infrastructure that is undefended.

3) Shortly after the Sk60Bs have launched a full CAP flight consisting of 6 Gripens loaded with Meteor air to air missiles set to max intercept is to launch and head to a holding position over the 3rd,5th and 19th regiments following path C and set up a CAP patrol over our forces without entering range of enemy air defenses.

4) At the same time or after the CAP flight launches a strike flight of 2 SU-25 Frogfoots loaded with ZAB-500 Incendiary Bombs in the long range configuration with 2 Gripens loaded with Meteor air to air missiles set to max intercept is to launch and follow path A and attempt to take out the Diamond convoy. RTB safely after mission complete follow any path necessary to return home without further engagement.

5) Another strike flight is to launch after the diamond convoy one consisting of 2 Tornados with Taurus KEPD 350P loadout, 8 F4-E Phantoms with GBU-24 Paveway loadouts and 2 Hawk 209 with Maverick missile loadouts and 1 EA-6B prowler set up for jamming purposes. This strike flight is to head along path B and is to strike enemy ground targets AFTER they have engaged friendly forces. All strikes are to be done at maximum weapons release range with the prowler providing as much jamming capability as possible against enemy air defenses. All planes are to immediately RTB on release of all air to ground ordnance to re arm in the same configurations and then take off and strike the advancing enemy forces again.

6) The Saab S-100B flying as AWACS and the KC-135 Tanker is to fly up and hold position at point E, planes requiring refuel are to use the Tanker as necessary.

There you go goons, it isn't that war crimesey and it isn't as detailed as other plans but it does the job. Also I know I left out the S-300 other than spotting that's because I plan around staying the hell away from it. The enemy is attacking us not the other way around i intend to try and take advantage of that.

They're more than vulnerable enough to any infantryman down there with a manpads using rockets where they just need to fire once and immediately peel away

Gunpods would necessitate that they get much closer and take multiple passes which makes them even easier targets

Guns are great as an afterthought to clean up soft targets. So is literally any other weapon. Using a gun because you've got it and you have spare fuel is fine, but carrying one deliberately for air to ground use is an odd choice. It doesn't gain you anything over the rockets except an increased propensity to be shot down by some dude with an Igla. Just say no to gunpods, kids!

1. Do we have forward deployment available for the Sperwers? (Units like https://wiki.baloogancampaign.com/index.php/DataFacility?ID=483 can actually act like a mobile "land carrier" for "small"-size aircraft like the Sperwer UAV)

2. What intelligence do we have on the location of the diamond convoy? In-game, do start with an actual contact? If not, what's the expected search area?

Ooh ooh, me is it me?

Put me in coach, callsign Spaceman!

I do not care what we buy as long as we get that AC-130 and I can be in it, callsign God. Ever since I was a teenager I've sexually identified as an AC-130, and this is my chance to finally be free. Free to take off, fly in circles slowly, and absolutely gently caress up anyone's day on the ground.

Do we know if it's an AC-130U Spooky with the 40mm Gatling, the 40mm Bofors, and the 105? Or is it the AC-130J Ghostrider which trades the 40mm Gatling for a 30mm autocannon and the bofors for a large assortment of LGBs and ATGMs?

It's the J, you can see the ports for bomb deployment on the rear gate in the photo from behind. Shortly after I took the photo it was set to be refit to remove the troop seats pictured aft of the fire control station to allow for more bombs and more ammo. And I think a second cannon, but I'm less clear on that one.

If only you guys had my swanky V-22s, you could fly some guys in and leave with a load of diamonds and a smouldering wreck that appears to be a destroyed convoy full of diamonds.

There was a terrible noise.
There was a terrible silence.

Perhaps you would like to trade a v22 for a pile of diamonds ... :D
