It's a great album. It may not be as pleasing as the last, but it's great in a different way.

I think his albums have had a really fluid progression from first to last. Leaving Fleet Foxes and putting out Fun Times in Babylon had this sense of wonderment and enlightenment and just like, cool let's have some humorous fun. Honeybear had stipplings of existential crises among the more bombastic music and outrageous lyrics.

Pure Comedy is this fascinating and intelligent dump of not-quite-pessimistic, wholly cynical satire. It's like if Vonnegut wrote songs. The first four or five tracks are just so dismal and depressive, but there's still some very sharp wit and humor. Things It Would Have Been Good To Know Before The Revolution, and Pure Comedy are very much Vonnegut influenced. All of the tracks are so so dense, and there's so much to unpack, so I agree that it can't be fully absorbed once through, but each of the songs are so well thought out and beautifully composed.

It's a hugely ambitious pseudo-concept album, and it's really grown on me a lot. I think it's loving beautiful.

I think that he's so divisive makes him less likely to fade away. There are some groups, I can't recall any names, where they get universal praise and then disappear. But some love him, and others hate him.

Also, Fear Fun is like 5 years old. Just last year, one of the songs ended up on the voice.

I agree that I wouldn't put father John Misty on that lyrical pedestal, and personally the new album hasn't grabbed me because I find the music itself a bit dull. However, I also strongly disagree that Fleet Foxes are in any way forgotten. They've left a pretty big mark, and those are albums I still go back to regularly.

My point was only that there is some heavy Vonnegut influence in the lyrics. Didn't intend to compare them as writers, and I admit the phrasing was confusing.

Lines like "and babies, that's pretty much how it's been ever since", or "from time to time we get a bit restless, with no one advertising to us constantly" could be quoted directly from Vonnegut. I'd be surprised if it wasn't intentional.

Charly Bliss is releasing "Glitter" next week and also right now on NPR. It's great. Seen it described as 90s-esque woman-led alternative, reminds me some of the Breeders, so that's how I'll describe it.

After a few listens I think I like the new Future Islands album more than Singles. It doesn't have the breakout single that was Seasons but I think it's a more consistent album. There's only one song I skip instead of zoning out after 5 or 6 songs on Singles. The first song, Aladdin, is really loving good.

I really like the new Karen Elson album, so if you're looking for something that's NPR approved, this is your LP. She worked with Jonathan Wilson, Patrick Carney, Father John Misty, and a few other people on Double Roses, and it's definitely a pretty good album. And there's nice little surprises, like the sax solo on Wolf. It's not ground breaking or anything, but it's pretty good.

Although, when writing the credits, they should have noticed that Jonathan Wilson was listed twice in succession. But hey, he might have done a lot for the record, so who am I to judge.

I love the sound of this track but am not sure if it does enough to fill the 11 minutes; there's a break at the 6-minute mark where you expect a key change or change in instrumentation, but instead they basically just repeat the first half.

It almost sounds like they're becoming slaves to the sound they've created; afraid to break out of the smooth glossy sound they've perfected.

Yeah, not really digging the new Future Islands album. Other than Aladdin, Ran, and Shadows, the rest of it is pretty forgettable.

The new New Pornographers album was a bit of a letdown too - especially considering three of the first tracks - Play Money, Whiteout Conditions, This is the World of the Theater - were fantastic. Would have loved if they'd explored these sounds more, rather than falling back into typical NPO stylings.

Whenever they release a new album my first times listening I'm always like "Eh, more of the same" but then the songs just have a way of burrowing into my brain eventually, in a good way. It's been happening with this one too the past few days, I'm starting to like it more and more although I agree the first few tracks are the best (especially Theater) and it sort of dawdles in the middle before picking up again towards the end.

Surprisingly I also don't miss Bejar's songs as much as I thought I would even though he's one of my favorite songwriters and my two favorite NP songs are his.

This is pretty much how I feel. It took a few listens, but even at their less-than-best, Newman and Case are difficult to dislike. The lack of Bejar only seems bad on paper. The album seems pretty cohesive without him there to break it up.

And it also means new Destroyer music on the way too...seems fair to me.

They're playing it in order, right? It kind of makes me chuckle that they're actually going to open a show with "The Day I Finally...".

Anyway since you brought them up I will just go ahead and say that "No" is one of the best songs Merritt's written and '92 -> '05 is the best stretch of the album (with the entirety of disc 2 right after, except skip "Happy Beeping").

Yep, all 50 in order with some projections for each song. I'm sure Stephin will make light of the opening song in his usual pithy way.

Edit: It totally worked. He used this stick with various percussive implements on it.
