Preacher was loving great. Me and mine loved it from start to finish. And I thought it did tight thematic work, and really understood how to structure a series and adapt a work to a different medium. Good stuff.

The book is like 10 years old, if you were around the age of the characters in said book when it came out you'd be drat near 30 at this point.

How many people watching the show read the book though? I wasn't even aware of it.

I guess... I'm on episode 7 and I was hoping this would be more like The Leftovers and less like Pretty Little Liars (a show which, to be fair, I haven't seen).

The best thing you can say about season 1 of Preacher is that if they turn the show around this season it will be easy to skip the first season since nothing that happened in it outside of the pilot episode mattered and all ended in a big wet fart.

It has a bunch of people recommending it. I watched the first episode out of curiosity and it wasn't for me, but then you also have people posting here that you can't judge it on the first episode.

Preacher s1 could have been a three-episode miniseries and it still would have been a little draggy.

Blade Trinity was not good primarily because Wesley Snipes had gone off the deep end by that point. They were constantly changing the script and filming with his stand in because he refused to work and would only communicate with the director via post-its written to Blade.

Patton Oswalt has a great postmortem on it:

Was that the one where Snipes refused to open his eyes in one scene so they had to CGI it in?

If I were pressed, it's because it's more serious and a bit more nasty than any other version I've checked out. I could image that was a sticking point.

For the guy watching, BOSCH S1 is 'ok' but the other two are a lot better. I think Sepinwall in his review just said that you could read a synopsis, or the book, of the first season and be fine.

And I think it's one of the few 'Hey we're making a 13 hour movie' shows that doesn't feel like it has about 4 episodes too many.

Preacher is a goddamn post-modernist art-piece of a TV-season and I love it. It wasn't the best, second best or even third best of the year (which is a testament to just how good 2016 was for TV) but what it did it did really well. I'm still amazed that the season finale went out on a literal hot fart.

The first season of Preacher was a lot like the first season of The Leftovers, only instead of existential pretension there's an Irish vampire

That's probably why I liked it more than many, I'm pretty sure the posters saying it was bad are also the ones who thought S1 of The Leftovers was bad and that is so clearly not true.

And I'll admit it probably works WAY better as a binge watch. But poo poo, I didn't even watch the entirety of Patriot in one night, and that's become pretty much my new "favorite show ever".

Butt first, let's
check the feeds.

I loved Preacher but its the exact kind of show a lot of folks around here hate because "nothing happens" and its all about immersion in a super weird cast and setting. Like that ending is crazy as gently caress and you either embrace it for it's craziness or you get upset that "the whole season was a waste of time."

I don't especially take to the "waste of time" concept of tv because the journey is more important than the destination to me. And Preacher is all journey.

edit: and yeah, its a much better binge.

But you're confusing terms anyway. The 100's premise was Dumb, but it knew that and embraced it, up until it kind of didn't, and then I fell off it. The Leftovers' was insultingly stupid and I never got to the part where it apparently became good.

Alright what is this show? Wikipedia says it's a drama. Everyone's raving about it, but it feels like there are already at least a half dozen shows that have the same premise of a mysterious rapture-like event, and I didn't want to get into a dead-end LOST-style show. Hearing that it has a definitive end-point and seeing the Perfect Strangers opening and giant inflatable Gary Busey are making me curious though. Is it good, or another hate watch TV IV favorite?

*hastily scrawled on notebok paper, held out to u*
your wonder is irrelevant. you dont deserve to see the perfect strangers opening, or inflatable busey. start at season 1, we're already on the 3rd and final season.

2% of the worlds population vanishes without reason or explanation, nobody even really tries to find an explanation. Like they just blink out of existence, there one instant and gone the next. The show isn't about hard answers, the show isn't about hunting down the one rogue scientist who just might know the key to it all, or undoing the event, or anything. It's just about how the world would fall apart after an event like that took place. The cults and scam artists that would spring up in response.

Is it religious? scientific? aliens? nobody even really tries to find out because they're dealing with their own poo poo.

I don't watch it either, but I might give it a shot if it ends well.

As far as I know, the best description is "What would happen if 5% of the population was mysteriously raptured away and nobody knows why and you don't ever figure out why so don't even ask - Seriously, if you're only watching to try to figure out the mystery of what happened to them, you're going to be disappointed so don't do that" , THE SHOW.

People are most certainly trying to figure out what happened. Religious groups kind of skipped right to the conclusion though. There's a government department that investigates disappearance claims for payout purposes, and research into what happened.

Season 1 is too slow for some people but I like the pace and mood. Season 2 is incredible in every way and has some of the best episodes of anything ever. Season 3 is a shortened final season and is moving at a great pace.

The Leftovers is really good. It's dark, slightly funny, weird and ambiguous and absolutely beautifully shot. It's even better on subsequent viewings because of subtle foreshadowing and excellent symbolism throughout.
