Ratings down across the board for the NBA this year

What do you do when your respective solo shows are crashing into obscurity? You try to put the band back together, of course!

Francesa is retiring on his own terms at the end of his current contract and Russo got a pretty lucrative deal to go to Sirius. I doubt either one has any regrets.

Sunday's Food City 500 got bumped to today because of weather. Some fox affiliates obviously couldn't cover it. A Bay Area Fox station could... but bumped it to their secondary channel in favor of the Wendy Williams Show

I'm not surprised. NBA's regular season ratings have never really been that strong to begin with and most regional sports cable networks are doing really bad.

My hope is that this brings at least road games back to OTA television to teams that have abandoned that.

That's not going to happen except maybe for baseball. There's no way broadcast TV is going to go to something that'll draw a lot less viewers than they already have.

Most of the time the networks that shelled out (and are still shelling out) for sports rights are your non-network or affiliated with weak network stations. They really only stopped having sports because they got priced out of them. They have some pretty serious lack of content problems and while a regular season Bucks game isn't gonna generate the same ratings as Modern Family, it'll beat 30 year old standard def movies or Coach reruns a lot of local stations are stuck with.

I think maybe even CW networks would probably consider getting back on board because while they have improved their critical acclaim and ratings, they have had a hard time with visibility and if they could get sports rights at an affordable price again I think they would at least consider them just to get some eyes on their networks.

I'm pretty sports ratings across the board have been down over the last year.

So much crazy poo poo is happening around the world right now that if you are even remotely interested news and current events it's pretty easy to put live spots on the back burner.

I didn't realize I haven't done the same until you mentioned it. I've been catching the first half of one game and the second of another. I managed to watch a solid hour of Celtics/Bulls game 4 before I had to stay away and that was the most I've been able to catch., Weren't ratings way up last year because of the Warriors though?

MourningView

Ratings will still pop for something historic like the Warriors chasing the all times win record or the Cubs going for their first World Series in a billion years but generally ratings for most things are trending down. If we get a Cavs/Warriors rubber match I imagine that will do pretty well, if not as well as last year did.

Are the Cavs and Warriors still worlds ahead of the rest of the NBA? That can't help things either

The Warriors are the Cavs weren't all that great this year. People assume the Cavs can turn it on in the playoffs (and they did sweep their first round series) but the defense was trash and they weren't even the 1 seed in the East.

I think having dynasties and the same teams on top every year is generally good for the league, not bad, at least assuming they're teams with marketable stars. Another Cavs/Warriors series is definitely the best case scenario for the league ratings wise

I think it's only going to be a story when rights are up again (that bubble is going to burst sooner rather than later) but I think the 4 majors are locked in for a while

The Cavs having finally won a title for the city of Cleveland is what doesn't help. Game Seven last year was the single most-watched basketball game since Lakers-Celtics in 1987, and that was in no small part due to all of us wondering if the Cavs could take down the 73-9* Warriors and the first major championship for the city in over 50 years.

A rematch would still get a lot of viewers, but no it's not going to reach last year's figures.

*lol frauds

NBA teams handle their own deals for the regular season broadcast rights, so we'll probably start to see effects sooner. The Clippers thought they'd get a better deal, or be able to put together their own streaming service (which I don't think will ever happen despite what Ballmer thinks), but in the end they took Fox Sport's $550 million for 10 years best offer. Some consider this a bad deal because they turned down $600 million for the same deal the year before (taking $25 mil for one year instead), but it's hard to know if that $5 million per year decrease was due to long term ratings concerns or just because they had the Clippers over a barrel due to the mistakes Ballmer made. I dunno, I still think it's a pretty solid deal considering there are teams that aren't getting $10 million per year for their broadcast rights.

The national TV deal for the NBA is on pretty solid ground and went up so much because in reality they're paying for the playoff rights and the playoffs do generally well and have bucked ratings trends for the most part as long as there's something compelling for the series.
