This was and still is my opinion, but my cousin wound up having to use bitcoin in Bhutan while he was volunteer doctoring over there. Then some travelers in Nepal gave him another $800 in bitcoin because they didn't have any american or local cash on them. Apparently using local currency is hard in places like that, so wealthy white people use bitcoin because its actually more stable.

Still a giant Chinese ponzi scheme.

This article basically explains why they're tamping everything down now: https://www.navytimes.com/articles/carried-away-the-inside-story-of-how-the-carl-vinsons-canceled-port-visit-sparked-a-global-crisis

Basically, the entire DoD Public Relations arm fell asleep. So, the media started beating the war drums about a carrier that wasn't on the way to Best Korea and the DoD didn't knock it down. Donnie saw some of the media, likely from Fox News, and started bleating about his big, tough, tremendous armada believe me. Mattis basically did the same thing, though reasonably. Meanwhile, DoD PR still never bothered to correct the record that the carrier group WASN'T on the way and in comes the birthday of Kim Il-Sung, which Best Korea was sending out poo poo like they were going to test a nuke.

Then Best Korea fires a botched missile, they have a parade with a bunch of things that look like missiles, and turns out the carrier group was moving in the opposite direction. South Korea is now TURBOPISSED at us for basically lying.

So yeah, Mattis is tamping poo poo down.

There's a few things. First, just like in the last >$1000 bubble, the top exchange has solvency issues and has no way to deposit or withdraw actual currency. So its price is 100-300 higher than other exchanges. Some other exchanges as well are having deposit/withdraw issues because any bank that follows any money laundering laws refuses to work with bitcoiners. This causes price increases because people are desperate to get coins off of one exchange to a place where they can actually withdraw money. This happened when Mount Gox was going down as well.

Second, china is pumping the price through manipulation. Some of the largest chinese exchanges have been falsifying volume and orders to drive up prices. China cracked down a bit on them a while back, though, which caused another spike.

Essentially much of the same stuff is going on that happened during the last price spike with the added issue of almost complete lack of use. Bitcoin's actual trading volume is nearly zero on a practical scale. The price could stay at the peak simply because there isn't enough trading to actually crash it (frisbee on the roof). At the same time, since there isn't anyone actually exchanging it for real currency, the $ value is effectively meaningless because it isn't convertible. If you can actually get cash out of bitcoin you'll be lucky to get 1/2-2/3 the "market" rate.

THEY'RE STILL BITTER ABOUT THE EASTER EGG ROLL

quote:

No slight is too small to ignore. West Wing staffers have even fumed about news coverage of the Easter Egg Roll. First, it was that Trump’s White House wouldn’t be smart enough to pull it off. Then, it was that no one would be there. And after the Easter Egg Roll went off without a hitch, “no one wanted to give us any credit,” said one senior administration official.

A non-trivial amount of that yuan volume wasn't legitimate as well. Any legitimate volume (and the BS trade volume) disappeared when regulators got involved. At the same time they were deliberately spiking the price, the owners of the chinese exchanges publicly discussed that they'd start measuring price differently (in microbits rather than full coins) to try to hide the volatile price swings and surges from regulators.

I tried to buy Bitcoin last month and it was a loving bitch. I can't buy from sites like coinbase.com because I live in Germany but I'm a US citizen so I don't have any German ID. So I had to buy from users and they won't let you buy it with PayPal unless you have your bank linked to it so you can have the funds available in the account because of rampant charge backs I guess. Then you have to send them a picture of your ID, a picture of you holding your ID, etc...it's dumb as hell.

quote:

President Donald Trump has given the military the authority to reset a confusing system of troop limits in Iraq and Syria that critics said allowed the White House to micro-manage battlefield decisions and ultimately obscured the real number of U.S. forces.

The Pentagon, which confirmed the move on Wednesday, said no change has yet been made to U.S. troop limits. It also stressed the U.S. strategy in Iraq and Syria still was focused on backing local forces to fight Islamic State - a tactic that has averted the need for a major U.S. ground force.

The force management levels, which are officially at 5,262 in Iraq and 503 in Syria, are believed to be more than a couple of thousands troops shy of the actual number of U.S. forces in both countries.

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said Trump delegated authority to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to determine force management levels for Iraq and Syria going forward.

"We want our reporting to Congress and to the public to be more easily and clearly understood," White said in a statement, which was reported earlier on Wednesday by BuzzFeed News.

Proponents within the U.S. military of changing the system also argue that bringing that decision-making authority to the Pentagon from the White House will allow more flexibility in responding to unforeseen developments on the battlefield.
