Sakho and Liverpool should really take action against FIFA here. That absolutely had a massive impact on our season and his career.

Sakho would have been a lock for the Euros, but instead France fielded Adil Rami as one of their centre-backs.

No, the issues with Sakho only began after the suspension. He was our first choice center back throughout the end of last season up until all this stuff happened, then came the problems with the preseason tour and missing training and flights and poo poo.

I don't know what to think about this stuff tbh. Sakho clearly was taking something that wasn't cleared with the Liverpool club doctors and that's a bad thing. It was also a substance which appears to have a similar affect to a banned substance. I think Fifa and Wada are right in that circumstance to investigate him, and realistically if you're doing an investigation into whether or not a player has taken a banned substance you can't allow that player to keep playing. It's a total mess.

Seems pretty rational? If you're investigating if someone has been cheating you can't let them carry on potentially cheating? Same way that if you are being investigated at work for doing something dodgy you get suspended whilst the investigation carries on.

The problem is that there are so many banned substances that can be found in commonly available things that you can accidently take something on the banned list. Even false positives are a problem, which is why there's an A sample and a B sample.

If something gets a clear shot in one of Barcelona's lockers of a bottle that says THESE ARE PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS DONT LET ANYONE SEE THIS, then sure. But otherwise players being "proactively" suspended, not playing for months, and cleared of all wrongdoing would happen way too often.

Newcastle United and West Ham United's grounds have been raided in a fraud investigation, resulting in several arrests.

HMRC said it deployed 180 officers across the UK and France, and several men working within professional football had been held.

It searched premises in the north east and south east of England.

The BBC understands the suspected income tax and National Insurance fraud amounts to £5m.

Business records, financial records, computers and mobile phones were also been seized in the raids.

West Ham United said in a statement the club was "co-operating fully with HMRC to assist their inquiries."

also lol:

Burnley midfielder Joey Barton has been banned from football for 18 months after admitting a Football Association charge in relation to betting.

The 34-year-old has been fined £30,000 and warned about his future conduct after being charged with breaking FA rules for placing 1,260 bets on matches between 26 March 2006 and 13 May 2016.

Barton plans to appeal against the length of the suspension.

"The decision effectively forces me into an early retirement," said Barton.

The midfielder bet on some matches in which he played but he stressed in a statement on his website that "this is not match fixing" and that at "no point in any of this is my integrity in question".

He added: "I accept that I broke the rules governing professional footballers, but I do feel the penalty is heavier than it might be for other less controversial players.

"I have fought addiction to gambling and provided the FA with a medical report about my problem - I'm disappointed it wasn't taken into proper consideration."

Barton also called on the FA to do more to tackle the culture of gambling in football.

He said: "If the FA is truly serious about tackling the culture of gambling in football, it needs to look at its own dependence on the gambling companies, their role in football and in sports broadcasting, rather than just blaming the players who place a bet."

Betting company Ladbrokes is currently one of the FA's main commercial partners.

Apparently it's all to do with transfers to and from Marseilles:

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/west-ham-united-and-newcastles-offices-raided-by-tax-officials-a3523951.html

quote:

Sources in the southern port city said transfers involving all three clubs are being examined as part of an ongoing probe into a range of allegations including embezzlement.

"The belief is that organised criminal gangs targeted senior officials at the club, agents and other parties," said one legal source in Marseille.

"Marseille has done a lot of high profile business with both West Ham and Newcastle in recent years, and accordingly both British clubs are being brought into this enquiry."

The Standard understands that the role of leading football agents in player transfers is a main focus of the investigation.

Of course it is, and the only person at fault for this is Joey Barton. I guess it explains why he's constantly doing stupid loving poo poo - it's always someone else's fault, never his, and if he is made to be held accountable, it's just everyone picking on good ol' Joey. What a loving idiot baby.
