Kojima is both a really great writer and a really bad writer, at the same time.
MGS2's mindfuck narrative was pretty amazing.

I never knew Kojima actually despised women and compares them to horses and dogs because his video game only lets you have 1 partner at a time.

That's stupid, I've known people who have owned two dogs AND a wife at the same time.

Also you can play Phantom Pain as a woman so the "Woman is on the same level as horse/dog" thing is even sillier to argue, Mother Base 2.0 can have more than it's share of women who you are allowed to use in the combat role, who you can pick same as you do Big Boss or any of the other faceless Diamond Dogs buddies to use in the field.

What is your metric for reasonable analysis? Mine is that if there is a menu screen that rotates between a dog, a horse, and a woman and you can choose one to use to play the game, then the game understands them as more similar to each other than they are different from each other.

Like it may not have been anyone's deliberate choice to equate a woman with an appliance or a dog, but the choice to build a game where there's a woman and a dog and you choose one to help you means that in the logic of the game the woman and the dog are more alike than different. Like how if you have the choice of a pen or a pencil to take notes, the pen and the pencil are both utensils that allow you to take notes even if they are not identical.

Mine basically stops when I'm trying to determine the deeper meaning behind simple mechanics like you're doing. The game "understands" your assists as nothing more than assets to be used when a 0 turns into a 1. English is not my first language so this probably won't capture 100% of what I mean, but it comes close enough.

But for this conversation I'll throw that overboard and say you're being overly simplistic. So the game gives you D-Horse, D-Dog, Quiet and the mech whose name I forgot. Every one is an equal because they can assist you in the battlefield, yet they're different in that they perform different duties. To use examples: D-Dog can distract people(its been a while, but I cant really remember if D-Dog had any real unique abilities), D-Horse can poop on command, you can ride the robot and Quiet can take out every single enemy in whatever camp you assign her to. Those are vastly different mechanics and vastly different tools. You can't ride on D-Dog and you can't make the robot poop, so you can't use them interchangeably. But lets take an example where 2 buddies can do the same thing: Kill people. D-Dog can take out enemies you tag, same as Quiet can. However D-Dog is more vulnerable than Quiet because he's basically doggy CQCing while she's miles away taking headshots. So again, you have to utilize them differently, which means they're different on paper. Oh and D-Dog cant take out a helicopter.

We're no longer talking about taking notes but about making art using a pencil, clay or marble. The end result may be the same thing: Art. But it'll be executed in a different way with each tool.

ALSO: the thing about Quiet getting drowned was her faking out the Russian soldier, since she was taken captive then and needed a surprise attack to get free. And the soldier didn't know she could breathe through her skin, so she just played along.

I just want to point out that back when Shamus was nominated there was a discussion about it on the Diecast where they pretty much said they thought the people who nominated Shamus had no loving clue what they were talking about because sci-fi has always been about politics. In the show notes Shamus mentioned that the only reason he accepted the nomination was because he didn't want a bunch of assholes dropping into his comment section stirring up poo poo.

Some of y'all don't seem to realize that it's possible to do sexist junk without being a secret oppressive illuminati dude, and the fact that the sexism being unconscious or unwitting does not take away it being kind of crap.

Like it doesn't matter if anyone INTENDED Quiet to be equated with a dog and a horse, that's the thing that ended up happening, and maybe in the future devs, having seen this criticism, can think a little harder about how their stuff comes across before repeating that mistake.

I heard about that, but I thought there were more episodes aimed specifically towards video games. Maybe I'm just mis-remembering.

I have to be honest, I sort of took issue with the episode. I get what she's saying, but with games like Uncharted and Half Life 2, it sort of feels like there's a disregard towards character development displayed in the other parts of the game. Also, while I don't like Bioshock: Infinite either, describing Elizabeth as 'a sexualized slot machine' seems sort of ill-fitting.

Escaflowne: The Movie
The Digimon Movie

Having watched the Digimon and Pokemon films in theaters, I honestly feel bad for dragging my parents to these hot mess films. Especially the Digimon movie. Good lord. (Though admittedly, the animation style for the film is really neat compared to the rather standard looking TV animation)

It's kind of been something we've blocked from out collective memories out of mutual embarrassment. I can't imagine what my Grandma thought when I asked her to put Pokemon 4Ever on the satellite tv. That was near the tail end of my infatuation with the franchise but it must have been incomprehensible to her.

But hey, now my mom only has to hear about incomprehensible japanese pop culture from her highschool students, and occasionally when I tell her that my Gunpla kits are just robot models without much more detail.

That movie happened to be released at the same time as my extended family had a get-together. And me and every single one of my cousins were into Pokemon. Needless to say, our local theater made a fuckload of money off of us.

A reminder that Burger King had a promotion deal for the movie and released a whopping 152 toys, one for each Pokemon.

The animation is really good in the part that adapts a really good Digimon movie, which in America was cut down and sandwiched between two other movies nobody likes or cares about for some reason. Originally it was called Digimon: Our War Game and the director went on to make a movie called Summer Wars that re-uses some of the same concepts but with an original story. It is good.
