OK, cool. Those accessories are all in the hundreds of thousands of halos and I'm making like 10,000 a chapter and getting stone awards :( It looks like I'm missing a lot of fights even though I've been trying to explore the levels?

I think one problem is that gamers seem to me to desire a kind of special privileged criticism that the medium of games does not by any metric warrant.

They want good criticism of their pop art of choice, and that's cool. Like for me? I am on balance glad that people like Tom Ewing and Robert Christgau exist, even if one of them has opinions I love and one has opinions I hate. They're both putting in a good faith effort and are both entertaining to read for a variety of reasons.

But where gamers lose me is in wanting their beloved pop art of choice to get better criticism than rock music, without having earned it. Rock music has been around a lot longer than modern gaming, and especially rock music criticism has been around a lot longer than modern game criticism. And yet rock music criticism is 99% white noise, edgelords, trolls or farthuffers. Call it Poe's Law if you want, though I think there are other factors at work when it comes to pop art criticism and the way it's disseminated, but it seems weird to me that gamers want to bypass it and live in a world of artistic discussion that just... does not seem to me to have ever existed for any other form of art.

Some fights you actually have to backtrack through levels, IIRC.

It's not that they want criticism criticism, it's that they want the validation of their hobby/lifestyle/way they define themselves being considered important enough to merit serious criticism (but don't actually subject games to serious critical scrutiny because that's a one-way ticket to being deluged by whiny nerds for missing the point, taking things too seriously, etc). It's why so many gamers absolutely refused to let go of the hilariously petty grudge against Roger Ebert for saying video games weren't art even after he died, even after I'm pretty sure he eventually changed his opinion, but boy that sure became a thing people got hung up on because how dare you sir.

I am enjoying Bayonetta a lot. I just need to ignore the game telling me I'm shameful garbage and just keep going, maybe after I finish the story I'll go back and try to get better ratings on the levels.

I rented this from Gamefly and two hours after it arrived and I installed it, I shipped it back. I got Persona 5 in return so I think that was a good choice

The only person I know who enjoyed World of Final Fantasy is a hardcore Final Fantasy fan, so they were going to love this game no matter what, but everyone seemed to give it a hard pass in favor of Final Fantasy XV.

Yeah, I was having fun with it until FFXV and Last Guardian had a miraculous release and then were followed up by half the PS4's damned library at this point.

I'll get back to it some day.

Its heart was in the right place -- it even starts in a coffee shop, which is a really good sign -- but unfortunately its "cute" mascot character was annoying as gently caress.

If Tonberry were in its place, I would probably have kept going

I couldn't get through the demo for WoFF, like three battles of the slowest speed ATB combat ever killed it for me.

I liked WoFF a lot but the back quarter gets a bit tedious plot and gameplay-wise. For longtime fans of the series who can handle turn based battles, I'd say it's almost essential though.

beat dragon quest 8,

very solid, but i liked 5 better and it was probably too short and basic. I'm missing collecting monsters or having a jobs system for the characters. took 38 hours according to the time on my save file which feels way too short given 7 was like 2-3 times that length but I guess they were reacting to criticism?

can't wait for 11. glad i have dqh2 to tide me over.

i beat it by abusing the new character. she has a move that does 10% of your gold in damage with a cap around 500 or so. so you just save scum the casino, buy a bunch of prizes, sell them, go to dungeon, avoid all fights, wreck the boss by healing with 3 characters while the broken one throws gold for max damage and ends every fight in 5-8 turns

it was funny, but yeah it doesn't really improve combat wise.

my highest char level was like 32 lol

I'm excited though because its time for Xenoblade 3d
