When Drafthouse re-released the film in 2015 they had a whole set of posters featuring photos of the attacks and injuries which was obviously the selling point of the film for them. The tagline was "No animals were harmed in the making of this film. 70 cast and crew members were."

Robbie was a unique black-maned Rhodesian lion.

It didn't happen during filming so technically they're correct to say "No animals were harmed in the making of this film" but yeah, that's splitting hairs pretty finely

I love The Beastmaster and Phantasm but Don Coscarelli pulls that poo poo with The Beastmaster by saying no animals were harmed. The tiger that they for reasons unknown spraypainted black for the film died shortly after they were finished filming due to an allergic reaction to the paint. :(

The "No Animals Were Harmed" line has been a standard disclaimer in movies since 1972. Prior to that, animals were routinely killed and otherwise abused to get shots of the animals dying for combat scenes and such. Westerns were particularly terrible about it. Horses were shot with a rider on it to get the fall accurately. A wagon going over a cliff actually went over a cliff with the horses.

The American Humane Society raised a stink about it in the 40s and finally got the industry to develop trick animals that could mimic the actions needed or use camera tricks to get the shot without the necessity of harming the animals.

What it means is no animals were deliberately harmed for the purposes of filming. Lots of animals still get hurt or killed in movies (so do humans), but due to accidents that aren't part of the direct filming process. They are a different category.

i.e. The tiger with the allergic reaction wasn't painted so they could specifically film the allergic reaction. It was to make the tiger black, which is what was filmed.

So the movie gets to put the "no animals were harmed" tag on the movie if it was made with the approval and treatment guidelines of the American Humane Society. It's a sort of legal obfuscation that sometimes doing everything by the book results in a dead animal anyway. The difference is that it wasn't planned to happen, it just did due to unforeseen circumstances.

Kind of a loophole, but that's why it's there.

Well of course. Causing suffering to animals for something that only exists for aesthetic reasons, especially out of negligence (presuming no one is outright doing it intentionally anymore) is hard to justify ethically. Same reason for the backlash against fur, for example.

Apparently the whole system has, unsurprisingly given that it is a private organisation doing a job that should be done by a government agency and it is funded by the companies it is meant to monitor, degenerated into a scam. They fudge the tag or outright lie so as to cover for the productions. It's hosed up.

Yeah but in the case of Luck, they were already really old horses on the short list for the glue factory. One of them literally fell over and conked it's head and needed to be put down. It was a case where they were trying to do the best they could and people still got pissed off because they don't understand how old animals work.

We got a call from a customer today asking if someone's card could be revoked. The story he told was a little terrifying.

Someone we had certified was operating a crane on a job site, and he hit a guy with the hook & ball and left him hanging by one arm from a ladder. Doesn't sound so bad...except the ball smashed into the guy so hard that the impact broke his back. He was a 16 foot fall away from death if he wasn't able to hold on.

How did our illustrious crane operator respond? By jumping out of the crane and running away. They tried to get a hold of him for a drug test, but he didn't answer any calls and the guy sent to his house found him nowhere to be seen. Not only did he not even try to help the guy he nearly killed, he is now in hiding to try and avoid any consequences.

Even if he's a lovely caster, he can just cast them small. Lead will expand under pressure to grip the rifling, and even if it's too small to do that it at least won't risk overpressure like something too large to swage itself down would.

His entire schtick is characterized by not bothering to actually understand what he's doing or why certain things happen. He just does a thing to see the superficial result and then calls it an experiment.
