I just wish they'd call penalties in the playoffs the same as they do in the regular season.

I mean, ideally it wouldn't be that lovely either, but at least it would be consistent. Cullen getting hooked, Malkin's crackback block, whatever they called in overtime...

Niskanin was gonna cross check Crosby, but lets call a fuckin spade, a spade. He was gonna hit him with one of those ones in the upper or small of the back that dudes get cause they're close to the crease. That happens all night long. Don't be disingenuous and suggest that he was anticipating Crosby to fall after being tripped and catch him at that precise moment.

It was an unfortunate circumstance that resulted in an injury to the Pens most important player. It probably didn't warrant the 5 and a game it got but that is what happens when you punish outcome instead of intent. (Punishing results and not behaviors is a completely other can of fuckin worms.)

We can all chill and enjoy this really good rear end hockey series without being pedantic dicks.

Pretend I posted this because this is a good post with good opinions.

Also OT games need to stop or I need to stop scheduling early morning meetings. Either one is fine but I'd rather not have to rearrange my calendar.

It was nice to see the Caps win that one. They've looked great at 5 on 5 but their special teams and goaltending haven't been very good so far. Good game overall.

I don't think Niskanen injuring Crosby was intentional either. It seems pretty obvious that, like the other poster said, it was a routine "shove the guy in front of the crease" move that happens approximately 10,000 times a game. Just unfortunate timing with Crosby falling down.

The reporter was continually asking Trotz if Ovechkins slash was a hockey play. Trotz was clearly sick of the reporter and trying to get him to shut up and move on. The reporter's angle was that the slash wasn't a hockey play and therefore the Capitals conspired to injure Crosby. Trotz was pointing out that non-hockey plays happen several times a game from both teams, so if you want to argue that the Caps were trying to injure Crosby you have to also be open to the idea that the Pens were trying to injure Oshie etc.

I'm honestly surprised it took this long to have a hockey play knock Crosby out. Dude has been on borrowed time career wise I feel like. It reminds me of watching Lindros or Lafontaine, waiting for that odd hit that knocks em out for extended time.

Hot take: I don't think Niskanen meant to injure Crosby but you do have to be in control of your stick and he did cross check him in the head even if accidentally soo 5 + game was justified. I don't see any reason for additional discipline. Crosby being potentially concussed sucks. That's my story.

Pittsburgh media is doubling-down on their hot takes:

http://triblive.com/sports/penguins/12252418-74/gorman-crosby-hit-a-low-blow-by-caps

quote:

Was it premeditated?

Only the Capitals can answer that.

“Absolutely not. It wasn't intentional,” said Niskanen, a former Penguins defenseman who once fought Crosby while playing for the Dallas Stars.

“I've seen the replay. In super slow-mo, it looks really bad. He's coming across trying to score. As he's doing that, he's getting lower and lower. When it's happening that fast ... my stick and his head collided. I wasn't extending, trying to hit him in the head. It happened quickly.

“I wasn't even trying to cross-check him with a serious amount of force. A collision was going to happen there in the crease. When the play first starts, I think my stick had about his arm level probably right about where the numbers are on the side of his jersey. Because he's trying to make a play, he's getting lower and lower. He's getting pressured.”

Maybe you'd be more willing to buy that explanation if it wasn't from the Capitals, the same organization against which Crosby suffered a concussion on a blindside hit by David Steckel in the 2011 Winter Classic, an injury that caused him to miss 63 games over two seasons.

Bringing up the Steckel hit in the year 2017 lmao. Who the gently caress still thinks Steckel's hit was intentional?

Pittsburgh sports media is the worst.

I pay for the Dejan Kovacevic site too because they occasionally get good inside info and yeah they have the hottest takes there too assuming Niskanen did it on purpose. I'm sure at least part of that is catering to their audience though because that's what every Yinzer wants to hear. It's like writing for the WWE.

Pens meltdowns are being up 2-0 or 3-0 in a series and going "WE'RE GONNA FUCKIN' LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE" in spite of still having a ridiculously talented team despite missing Murray, Letang, and 2/3rds of a game (to this point) of Crosby.

I mean, admittedly, it was justified for 59 minutes last night (and still kinda will be with no Sid if that happens), but then they almost pulled a win out of the depths of their asses somehow and that, plus ^that^ roster, is luxury and good fortune 29 other fanbases wish they had.

That plus the "well I lived through the dark days" comments when those dark days consisted of four seasons out of the playoffs between two stretches of 10+ consecutive years in the playoffs and multiple cups on a team led by a generational superstar.
