From what I've read from reviewers who've seen the first four episodes, we're definitely getting multiple insane sex scenes. One said that this could possibly end up being the most controversial television show ever, and I for one am stoked. My dad passed away in January, and he loved mythology, history and Ian McShane, really enjoyed the book and was pumped for the show. I'm super bummed I can't talk to him about it. In Sandman, Ishtar was a fertility goddess who turned into a pole dancer due to her lack of worshippers. I think Kevin Smith might've ripped that one off for Dogma as well. I feel like Bast is probably doing alright now thanks to internet cats.

poo poo, as far as missing things goes: I remember going "heh, Low Key Lyesmith, like Loki Liesmith that's pretty cool" but, him being the actual Loki still took me by surprise as did his being in on the whole thing. And that's even with all the foreshadowing with all Wednesday's scam stories needing to have two people in on it. Yes, I felt like an actual dumbass when it all fell into place.

Related to this, I've always wondered who is the god Shadow meets that he can't remember anything about. In the book, all Shadow remembers is that he had an impression of great wealth or something like that so I figure he must be a god with some worshipers.

Wasn't Loki pretty heavily involved with killing Dream in Sandman? It's not the American Gods version, obviously, but I think he was able to pass himself off as a regular dude. Been a while since I've read it, though

So I re-read the book in anticipation of the show and got caught on this and had to go look it up. My best guess is that it's Mercury - or some variation thereof - as he was a god of luck, money, and quickness. The section of the book where Shadow meets him is in Vegas, and Mercury (or the nameless god) is able to spot luck and follow money, and decides to help out a random waitress. The forgetfulness might be a reference to quicksilver, or the element mercury, that is a metaphor for something slipping away or being hard to grasp.

Not sure if he ever tried to pass as a mortal or not tho. But, having just finished Gaiman's Norse Mythology I'm reminded that Loki one hell of a shapeshifter so I doubt it would be a problem.

Been a while since I've read it, though Yeah, he took Hypolyta's son and made it look like Dream killed him, which gave her an excuse to want revenge on Dream. She got the help of the Furies who also wanted revenge because Dream's son made them cry once. Loki was also a huge dickbag because Dream let Loki escape from Odin once and Loki still backstabbed him

In the book, Shadow's race is supposed to be mixed but you can't tell just by looking what the mix is composed of. One of the guards in prison says, "And what are you? A spic? A gypsy?" To which he replies, "Not that I know of, sir. Maybe." People can't tell if he's Hispanic or Roma, and even Shadow himself doesn't know his own race since he never met his dad. The show is bringing American racism to the forefront by making him explicitly black. I like this choice. If you read the book and thought he was white, it's because he's never described as black and he's the son of Norse god. I always imagined him looking like Joe Manganiello or Dominic Purcell.

I always pictured him as kind of a Vin Diesel guy, but with darker skin. I like Ricky Whittle a lot more, he killed it in this first episode.

TV Shadow is more talkative than book Shadow, basically because he has to be. The book gives you so much of what he's thinking about but he never says a word. On TV, Ricky Whittle has to blurt out, "My wife makes great chili!" That was kind of sad. In the book, you get a whole flashback vignette about him trying to duplicate the recipe and failing cause her chili was just so special. Gillian Anderson looks great as Media. Can't wait for that!
