Millennials "on average" aren't particularly open minded or brilliant or anything

SA is just a pretty negative, repetitive place regardless of the politics, YOSPOS falls into a pattern of the same handful of people saying "Javascript sucks"

SA is a case study for how poor management and cultural rot can slowly ruin a community

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?
but I heard the mods there don't like some words, like censorship is bad, man, they're just words, and besides it's all just ironic and meant in good fun, am I right?

reddit is basically just a forums hosting site, they make their money off ads and premium accounts which gives them an incentive to keep lovely but popular boards around even when they spend the majority of their time harassing/stalking other users and gaming site rankings (like /r/thedonald) or going "IM NOT TOUCHING YOU!" to leo (/r/jailbait). that doesn't mean there's not a huge variety of posters or opinions or opposition to the sites lovely moderation and y'all over her pearl clutching sounds as stupid as it did when your parents were whining to each other 15 years ago about "that terrible site kids post on where people post a picture of a man's anus FOR FUN"

reddit has a lot of useful and interesting 'communities', but its basic structure allows for the outright distillation of hate and general lovely behavior. get cast out of one subreddit for being a douchenozzle, go create your own separate subreddit and take dozens of other assholes with you where you can set your own rear end in a top hat-favorable rules. and then the cream of the rear end in a top hat crop goes wandering over into the worthwhile forums to poo poo them up. i remember finally abandoning my account over there when the r/jailbait poo poo went down and there were pro-jailbait posts in r/foodporn, of all places.

because those people are children, and they want what all children want: absolute freedom to do anything, and freedom from consequences for their actions. reddit, architecturally speaking, unfortunately enables that.

has anyone made a reader/parser that takes a reddit thread and organizes it like a forum? rearrange all the posts into chronological order and make replies into single-level quote blocks like we do here?

that would make the site tremendously more readable. it wouldn't make the discussions any better, but at least it'd be possible to follow what's going on.

Chronological you can get just by clicking "sorted by: old".

Turning replies into single-level quote blocks is impractical because you can't tell what portions of the prior post should be copied into a quote block (you could copy everything but that would likely bloat the process).

due to the highly concentrated trash nature of reddit they are appropriate because in any given post only one or two comments might actually be good and the voting system means u don't have to hunt for them

it's the antithesis of megathreads, small single use posts

have you LOOKED at the top voted posts in most popular subreddits

my favorite is when the top 30 visible comments (the most upvoted one and all the replies) are a pop culture quote and then a flood of other quotes. or maybe it's when the top one is a bad pun followed by a bunch of even worse puns
