Am I remembering wrong, or is there a lot more singing this season than in the old ones? I'm not complaining, I just think its an interesting part of Jonah's style

i think the singing was always something joel pushed, it seemed to drop off during the sci-fi years and now that joel's back behind the wheel...

like my personal impression is that joel mst3k is more of a whimsical sesame street style puppet show with bad movies and once he was gone it became all about the riffs for better or worse (barring network intervention)

I remember reading somewhere that the drop off of songs in the Mike-era was due to the fact that Mike was one of the most prolific songwriters on the show during the Joel-era (I believe Kevin was the other one), but with the added host duty Mike had lesser time to work on songs and therefore they appeared less frequently as a result.

Mike sang a bunch, just during the host segments.

And we should remember that some of the best musical numbers come from Mike. Where Oh Where Is My Werewolf springs immediately to mind.

Also, I feel the host sketches were better under Mike, but maybe I'm just a Mike guy.

Mike vs Joel is definitely a taste thing but I definitely preferred Mike's role on the SOL, and I like that his character gets dunked on by the bots. The shifts of power between him and the bots (and the Forresters) really make the later seasons stand out. Them driving Pearl insane with Mike's repeated falling down to get her to never show them another Joe Don Baker movie with bad editing is a great example, as is the bit in the same episode where he pathetically thinks he gets to escape now, because Joel got to after another bad Joe Don Baker movie.

Yeah, I remember more of the songs from Mike's era than Joel's. This season's songs are sticking with me though, Jonah's not half bad with the silly tunes.

I like how at least a couple of the songs are sung in the theater as a sort of narrative musical riff. They are really well done.

Yongary was another really good episode, rivaling Starcrash as my favorite of the season so far. The timing of the riffs is the best it's been all season, and I can't even recall one spot where they crammed in two or three jokes where one would have sufficed. Like, if this were the first Season 11 episode you watched, you'd have no idea what people were complaining about. The skits still miss more often than they hit, but I liked the one with Jonah and Crow talking about the musical tastes of famous astronauts.

Now, onto the episodes Joel was calling "the long dark night of the soul." I can't wait.

Yongary had the weakest skits of the season, I thought (at least of the episodes I've seen), but they're so short that even the misses don't overstay their welcome.

I think I figured out what bugs me about the new seasons skits. The Joel era had a sort of amateurish charm to it. The later Mike seasons and this new one are like forced attempt at amateurishness and it just comes off as grating and annoying.

In any case the revival has rekindled my interest in the show in general and I need to find time to go through my parents garage attempt to find the box that contains like 100 CDRs containing every episode of the Joel and Mike eras that I bought off of some guy for like $50 maybe 15 years ago.

I think it was a mistake for them to stick Manos first on the queue for the old ones in Netflix. You gotta build to that.

The movies are cut for time, that likely is one of the more egregious cuts. I kind wish they had taken advantage of their new home and just made the show to fit the runtimes of the films, but all things considered, I loved the new season and will be perfectly happy to get more of it no matter what little complaints I may have.

Yeah, I get that. Just seems weird that the SECOND switcheroo is the one they cut with no indication. Seems like you could shave off the, like, two scenes where the Germans have regained control of the ship much more easily. Ah well.

It's not like the continuity in that movie is steel cable-like. I like how the Allies take over the Uboat, then the Germans take it back and everyone's like "oh well, it's all in good fun" then they're all friends

Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 2 is such a classic episode in large part because the film, on its own, is loving hilarious and not really "bad" the way that say Manos is "bad" (where bad means more "boring/incoherent" than anything)
