MAF has been awesome but you're not giving yourself a real chance to win if you can't score more than 2 in regulation.

I mean Maf was definitely bad this year in the regular season but it's easy to forget that he posted a 920 the past two years in the regular season prior to this. That goalie coach they hired for him in 2014 or whatever seems to have improved him by a decent amount. Also he was a backup this year which he never has been and he clearly thrives more with regular playing time.

I'm not cheering for the Pens nor the Caps, but is it at all a possibility that Bonino could be fined for embellishing? I think generally they just do that for diving.

I mean yeah diving and not getting caught is a thing but the league will fine you if you do it too often or if its blatant enough, even after the fact, despite getting away with it during the game. It happened to Blandisi. Twice. In a single season.

or i dunno its human instinct to react to a potentially dangerous object threatening to hit you in the head even if it doesn't actually do so either way if this call is the difference between victory and defeat for the caps then lol because the best caps team ever playing a penguins team without its best center or defenseman with maf in the net shouldnt be this close

I'm not saying "it's all Ovy's fault" but is there some issue with the mix of players and leadership? Or are they just unlucky every year? Of course winning the presidents trophy doesn't mean you're a shoe-in for the cup but they don't look nearly as dominating as they did during the regular season and like they're playing nervous the whole time. Is a big shakeup needed at this point or just keep pounding away and hope they get the bounces on year?

Diving owns and any player who doesn't dive/embellish when they can get away with it is an idiot. Blame the refs for missing it or the league for not actually dissuading players from diving, not the players who help their teams win by doing so.

Jordan7hm posted:Maybe just a couple more. Montreal was very bad. Washington is a team that can tell you about massively outplaying the opposition and still losing. Montreal always seems like it has a lot of chances if you just look at shot totals but they love taking super low percentage perimeter type shots that'll be save 99% of the time by an even moderately competent NHL level goalie. Meanwhile the other team is often getting these chances right in the slot since when Weber isn't out they have a comically hard time keeping it clear when in their own zone.

I mean they're pretty obviously outplaying the Pens aside from game 3 which was fairly even. In the past I feel like their lack of speed has held them back somewhat as the Pens skated circles around them last season and to a degree the Rangers have also given them fits that way in the past but speed or no speed the Caps are flat out controlling play this year and do not deserve to be down 3-1. Unfortunately for them Fleury is hot and Holtby is...not.

If you want to see some real rear end diving, watch a soccer game. Every time someone lays on the pitch like a cripple for 2 minutes I want to throw sofas at my TV. As long as there's an incentive to pretend you took a hit, people will do it. You can increase the penalty for embellishment, but you can't fault players for taking advantage of opportunities when they can literally decide games. That's a huge play by Bones that isn't going to show up on a score sheet anywhere and could have been the difference between a win and a loss. If you want honor, you're going to have change the culture a fair bit.

Yeah I just looked at the shots for tonights game and yeahh hard to say the Caps didn't dominate the game by that measure but they have no finish. Weird. As for diving I just wish the league would suspend people for it instead of dinky rear end fines

Levitate posted:usually not to grab your mouth and act like it hit you there though Honestly they are getting close to needing to blow up the core. Not so much because they are chokers but because Ovechkin is a shell of himself, his contract is pretty prohibitive, and their prospect/draft pick cupboard is pretty bare. You can argue they have been unlucky for years but honestly they've just never put it altogether in a single year. Like I never thought goaltending would be their biggest issue this postseason but here we are. If they get normal postseason Holtby this series is probably 3-1 Caps. It's never been about getting unlucky (except maybe 2010 Halak), it's about them not piecing everything together at once. Like last season's Penguins had everything clicking. The Kings in 2011-12 didn't have a single issue that I could remember. The Blackhawks always got 3-4 lines of scoring, etc.

JawKnee posted:blow up the core of the team that just won the president's trophy huh? I'm not saying this offseason but in a year or so it's possible. They're already going to have to lose players like Oshie and Williams and another dude (hopefully not Schmidt) to expansion so they are looking to be significantly weaker next season at least at forward. They'll hopefully be better defensively via addition by subtraction of Alzner and Orpik but even so Carlson is a UFA in 2018. It's going to be a transition period starting this offseason and it's not crazy to consider Ovechkin's future on the team, unfortunately.
