In my ideal infinite budget P5, the palaces would have much more heist-elements rather than just surface-level theming. And stuff in the prologue wouldn't have been a fakeout, since when you first play the game you're led to believe that the Phantom Thieves aren't just operating in an otherworld but are in fact heisting in actual Tokyo (besides casinos not being a thing in Japan). Sure, there's a lot of things off about it that make sense in retrospect. Why are the staff passageway walls plastered with so many posters, etc. But the prologue plants this imagery of the Phantom Thieves actually pulling off heists in the real world that the game never follows up on and while I'm ultimately fine with it, I'd have loved it to have followed through.

I would hate that, honestly. Not only is it really nonsensical (how would these kids have the skills for that?), but it also undermines the big reveal that most people seem to think is the best part of the game. Realizing that the casino heist must've taken place in the Metaverse is one of the major clues that something isn't quite right about the Sae interview. It's basically the thing that made me realize the twist before it happened.

It'd basically be a different game anyway.

I'm ultimately fine with how P5 went but I still yearn for that brief image the prologue painted.

There's some early versions of Joker, and one of him as a girl, but none of them are drastically different from the final version.

Apart from some very early concept sketches, I haven't seen anything that looked it could be an unused party member. Either they decided on all the major characters very early on, or they're keeping them a secret so they can use them in the rerelease or another game.

Personally, I'd go with:

Joker as the guy telling the story
Shido as the rear end in a top hat teacher
Sae as his wife
Akechi as Jake
Kaneshiro as the guy who broke the pool table
Mishima as the kid who poo poo on the teacher's computer
The dead-eyed detective from Joker's interrogation as the cop
Ryuji as the guy who yells "SCATTER!"
Yusuke as the guy who stole the pictures

My version was:

Ryuji as the storyteller
Kamoshida as Mr. MacNamera
Any of the three female teachers as his wife
Mishima as Jake (because life exists to poo poo on Mishima)
Morgana as Catbus breaks the pool table
Ann can take a poo poo on his computer (because she loving hates Kamoshida)
Makoto breaking the 40 yelling "SCATTER" (because she later grows into a responsible father)
Akechi as the cop (because Sae is the only good cop)
And Joker as the creepy fucker who stole the pictures (Yusuke was a close second)

EDIT: drat Haru is a good choice for picture thief

I forget the exact phrasing, but in one of them Haru is once again making a vaguely disturbing remark about inflicting untold cruelty on shadows or something like that. Anyway the best part is Makoto responding with, "Haru can you please not stroke (touch/hold or whatever) your weapons when you say stuff like that."

This should have followed Persona 4 and had random party members "pair off" in the Mementos rest areas and shoot the poo poo.

In P4, you can actually see Yosuke get more comfortable with Kanji's sexuality as Kanji's S-Link progresses and Yukiko and Chie have supportive friendship dialogue.

I've seen pictures of concept art for Shido's palace that have it as an even huge cruiser liner with a roller coaster, ferris wheel, and even a space shuttle.

I was really surprised they didn't do that because the rest areas are actually important parts of the game now rather than things you'll likely never encounter.

In that respect I think P5 still does incidental conversations better because while they have less substance they're much easier to see and players won't entirely miss them. Also you can still get conversations with characters in your current party. Which is nice.

Treating the party as always being together and being able to switch at basically any time was a good move on the devs part. The excuse here isn't even that bad, you have a forward team and reserve members, which is more logical most JRPGs.

Yeah, it was always a little silly in P4 that you were running around with a four-strong party except during cutscenes, where even Rise was running around apparently just behind you.

I feel like the backrow SP regen could've been way higher though. As it is, it felt completely irrelevant compared to the SP Adhesives. It certainly didn't encourage me to swap out party members regularly.

With the amount the game characterizes HP/SP as 'energy to go on' in safe rooms, you'd imagine that just being on the reserve team would be enough to lick wounds and think really hard about souls so you can summon your motorcycle Other Self again.
