No, Gus' business partner was shot the first time either of them met Don Eladio and Salamanca quite a while before the events of this episode

Juan Bolsa is the guy who killed Danny Trejo's character for snitching. Gus later had Bolsa killed, as part of his scheme to ditch the cartel and start operating solo.

Game....Blouses.
I saw someone mention that it seems like the the show runners are regretting naming the show after Saul. I don't know if that's technically true, but the show is definitely moving beyond Saul, in the direction of becoming a Breaking Bad prequel. I've also seen some people say they hope/think the show will refocus on Saul, however I doubt this will happen.

When the show first started the general sentiment from people seemed to be to stay away from making it a Breaking Bad prequel. And it was understandable because nobody knew if great supporting characters like Mike and Gus would be able to stand on their own or if those characters might be ruined because more of a good thing isn't necessarily a better thing. But here we are now, with the show expanding at a incredibly fast pace. Not only is Jimmy getting much less screen time due to more scenes with Mike and Gus alone, we're also getting supporting scenes for Mike and Gus's story lines which don't even include Mike or Gus, like the one with Don Eladio. Mike and Gus were extremely popular characters in Breaking Bad and they seem to have only improved in BCS when givin more screen time. Given all of this and direction the show seems to be headed based on recent episodes, I don't think we're going to see any refocusing back onto Saul, I think the show's going to continue to expand and include more Mike and Gus story lines. And while that may seem a bit awkward given the show's title, I think the popularity of the characters will make it happen regardless.

this show has me rewatching some Breaking Bad and here's a question I have

so why did Walt get Saul and Huell to steal the ricin cigarette from Jesse? Did he have a reason for it at the time or was it something like "I might want it in the future" or "I don't trust Jesse to have it"?

anyway what's the spoiler rule in this topic. Is it assumed you've seen Breaking Bad or do we need to spoiler it

Nacho only exists in BCS aside from Saul's night desert escapade where he yells something about Ignacio. These shows blend together a LOT, aside from the pacing.

I'm not going to spoiler Breaking Bad stuff. That's too tedious IMHO.

I assumed Walt had Saul and Huell steal the Ricin specifically for Brock's poisoning? edit: Walt just didn't tell Saul why he wanted the ricin. Saul told Jesse later he had no idea about Brock, and that Walt told Saul he was saving Jesse.

It's so that when the poisoning happens Jesse will think it's Ricin, confront Walt about it, and Walt can tell a story that blames Gus and get Jesse on his side. At that point in the story they were estranged completely and Walt had to find a way to even get him in the same room with him.

He wanted to manipulate Jesse back onto his side by making him think that Gus poisoned Brock. He was never going to kill Brock ever, he just needed to get Jesse on his side so he could try to kill Gus.

He had to get the ricin out of Jesse's possession, so that Jesse would assume Brock had ingested it.

If Jesse had shredded his cigarettes and found the intact ricin capsule still inside, he would know something else had happened to Brock and Walt's whole scheme wouldn't work.

I'm pretty sure Walt always intended to use the Lily of the valley, because ricin would be too suspicious. The reason he had Saul steal the ricin cigarette was so Jesse would assume Brock had been poisoned with the ricin, making him susceptible to Walt's manipulation.

Ok that makes sense.

I was thinking his plan just relied on Gus going to the hospital. Not necessarily making Jesse think Gus did the poisoning.

Thanks, I didn't know if I had missed something in the house or diner scenes that revealed more about what Mike got from the address book.

So Kim gets Chuck to say that the original tape is 'safe under lock and key'. So I'm guessing that Mike got some details about a storage locker or safe deposit box or something.

With the plan being for Jimmy to take the tape and replace it with something absurd to push the angle that Chuck is nuts and unfit to practice.

Jerusalem
May 20, 2004

Would you be my new best friends?

I think it's far more likely that Jimmy's plan is to demonstrate Chuck's unstable mental condition and argue that he (Jimmy) was basically conned into his breaking and entering, and that the contents of the tape just demonstrate a loving brother telling his distraught, mentally fragile older brother what he wanted to hear in order to get him back on even keel.

There's also a possibility that Kim taped Chuck admitting that he set up a duplicate tape, to further the idea that Chuck set up with deliberate forethought driving Jimmy to his extreme actions in order to game the system and get him disbarred.

As for the address book, it may be somebody from Chuck's past who can also attest to his deteriorating mental state, potentially his ex-wife. The really ironic thing is that Jimmy said what he said because Chuck looked to have finally gone completely off the deep end and Jimmy was still trying to protect him, and now in order to save himself from Chuck he's going to have to throw him under the bus.

Well, we assume he got someone's information from the address book, because that's what's in an address book usually. But Mike just said "it was in his address book," so it could also have been anything else just tucked inside (e.g. the address to the secret storage unit where Chuck has a tape duplicating machine and ten thousand copies of the tape!)

(I am almost certain it's his ex-wife's contact info)

Big Mean Jerk posted:

It's much more tragic if (during BB) Kim is still alive and simply chooses to have nothing to do with Jimmy. Killing her off would be an incredibly cheap and hollow way for Jimmy to experience that loss. She won't die.

Another way that this show is a lot slower than Breaking Bad is in how few people have died/been killed. We're in the third season and the total list of deaths that I can remember are

- the truck driver
- the civilian who found the truck driver (offscreen, only referred to)
- the two dirty cops that Mike shot (in a flashback)

In Breaking Bad's very first episode, Walt killed one of the drug dealers with phosphine, and the bodies just kept piling up from there. This far into BB there had been dozens of deaths on-screen, and hundreds if you count the 737.
