We still have the shot data from that time. Hartford was worse in both shots for and against, and Ottawa's ratio, while really bad, doesn't stand out. They were also pretty even in # of PP/PK opportunities. They had by far the lowest shooting percentage and save percentage, including the worst powerplay and penalty kill percentage.

Isn't Pedan... not very good? I saw him a few times when he played in Bridgeport and he was slow and looked outmatched by most AHLers.

I don't understand why Canucks fans/writers so constantly and frothily demanded Pedan/Subban be called up and played. They're still developing to play well in the AHL. I get that the Canucks defence ranges from terrible to okay, and then Tanev, but what purpose does it serve to see Subban obliterated and Pedan embarrassed on a regular basis. You miss 100% of the bad plays you never call up unready developing players from the minors for?

I didn't mention it because I wasn't certain, but the article confirms his play regressed this season to the point where he was a healthy scratch in several games. Get this man into a 3rd line d-pairing!

Because it's his 22 year old season next year and it's time to see if he can do anything in the NHL. Eventually a player passes the point that the AHL helps improve their game and they stagnate at lower levels. The AHL superstar phenomenon. I don't think Subban is anything special, but I think his shot and skating are enough for him to carve out a Yannick Weber like career in the NHL. Pedan is a #8 at best and I wouldn't care if he walked for free this summer but it doesn't hurt to resign him as depth.

The time to experiment with youngsters was after it was clear they were going to finish very low in the standings last year (so like December) and see if the kids had anything to give. At worst if generates some buzz and creates a bit of optimism, something the team is very short of right now.

Northern Ontario is very, very empty.

Thunder Bay is closer by about 45 minutes, and we have over 100K people. Giroux, along with Pronger and Mike Richards before he fell apart, is one of those guys people will claim is from here even though they're from other towns.

BSH did a super deep dive into the year that wasn't for Ghost Bear

TL/DR: Murphy's Law year. Terrible puck luck and the benchings were understandable but may have done more harm than good. He's very offensively minded, to the point where he can still be something of a liability with play coming back against him. Being paired up with AMac did him absolutely no favors.

In the case of Subban, at least for me, Philip Larsen was signed almost exclusively to act as a 1PP unit shot. He was a disaster both defensively and in the PP role and I see no reason why Subban, who's established himself to have a pretty dang good shot in the AHL, couldn't play that role. He certainly couldn't be worse defensively.
