I should point out that the 2015 NLDS is tied for my favorite series of all time with the 2011 World Series. Yes, we lost. To the Cubs, even. However, I got to take my dad to Game 4 (and my write-up for it was super Field of Dreams-y) and that series was also when I met Kevlar and Poque. Totally worth the Cards losing in October, I just hope they don't make a habit of it.

I could see giving it to Edgar maybe, bur Mo Vaughn was flat out worse at everything.

Sigh. I realize the Cubs are very good, but man I am yeaaaaars from stating something like this.

My most interesting game was Liriano's no hitter against the White Sox where he walked like 42 players. We were in the scout seats directly behind home plate and didnt even realize it was a no-no until the 6th inning.

Plus you might be able to unload Markakis on somebody who needs a leadoff guy for a prospect or two. He's playing well and I'd much rather have Markakis at the top of the order than Carlos Santana. Not that I dislike Santana, I just like the idea of my leadoff guy being more mobile, and Nick can still move despite being 33.

It came on the heels of 4 straight NLCS appearances, including a championship and a pennant. If ever there were a time I'd have had the attitude that it was someone else's turn, that year was it.

Albert Belle was one of the most hated people in baseball, and for some reasons rightfully so. He also had the bat scandal the year prior.

Edgar led Seattle to their first ever playoff, considering the team was without Griffey most of the season. But people didn't value OBP, and him being a DH didn't help either :smith:

Nah, getting Upton off the books was so crucial that I remember people being shocked they even got a prospect out of it at all. So much dead weight.

Meanwhile all the real prospects are a year or three away, and that's fine. Some of them will make it.

I disagree. They could have maxed their return on Kimbrel and just ate Upton's deal or waited to see if he rebounded. They were in full-on rebuild mode and rebuilding teams don't need money, as evidenced by them eating a whole lot of deals over the last couple years, but they do need as much talent as they can get.

Jose Mesa, a closer who finished 4th in the voting, was only worth .4 WAR less than Vaughn. That was a terrible year for voting.

Revelry in the Dark

if you're rebuilding, its best to follow the Cubs and now Yankees model of finding talented hitters and figuring out the pitching later. as we've seen, pitchers are increasingly more fungible, and aces like Kershaw and Sale are extremely rare! of course, you need good luck and good scouts to even have poo poo maybe break right, but it seems like hitting first pitching later is a solid model to build on

At least they got the Cy Young right in 95. Johnson and Maddux were insane. But then again, they were insane by both traditional and advanced stats.

Also, I just want to talk about how insane / weird Albert Belle was:

- Charged the stands when he was in college
- Corked all of his bats in 94
- Was told to apologize to the media for not speaking to them during the 95 world series, refused
- Was charged 10k a year by the Indians because he wrecked the clubhouse continuously, including throwing plates in the showers
- Preferred the clubhouse be below 60 degrees, and one time when another player turned up the heat, he went to the thermostat and turned it down and smashed it with a bat
- Destroyed Kenny Lofton's boombox
- Chased after teenagers in his car and hit them after he alleged they egged his house
- Crushed Fernando Vina's face to break up a DP
- Threw a foul ball at a fan because the fan was heckling him

I'm probably missing things. But while I will admit Belle has HoF numbers, the dude was (technically is, he's still upset about the 95 MVP award lol) insane. I think this is the one use of the character clause that makes sense.

Went to watch the clip of Belle laying out Vina. Saw this in the related videos.

Bottom of the 11th? Hit by a pitch? NO. I want to hit, drat it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYDBFAFOqC8

With a bonus of what I assume were some "turn forward the clock" unis.

Edit : I didn't notice the graphic at the start of the clip and checked the box score. Belle was 4-4 on the day at the time of the at bat. 3 HRs, a single and walk. Wanted that game winning 4th HR pretty bad, I guess. Orioles won in that inning. Ripken singled in Surhoff three batters later.

I definitely see the point, but think there's a deeper problem here that the Braves then were (and probably still are) just across-the-board terrible in identifying and developing hitting talent; these are the same people who ignored every single warning sign about Francoeur, who did whatever the hell they did to Andy Marte for him to end up like he did, who kept pushing Jordan Schafer up the pipes, who consistently made terrible decisions on expensive long-term contracts, etc. It's a miracle that Freeman survived, and probably just a matter of random luck given what a disastrous run of drafts they had for almost a decade there. What they could do then was bring unheralded arms through (and then torch through them at the major league level, but that's a different pathology).

If anything, they probably didn't burn down enough of the structure. They never quite went full Astro.

We were talking about the bat incident in the GDT and Intruder reminded me that the bat they replaced wasn't Belle's, and in fact belonged to Paul Sorrento, with Sorrento's signature stamped on it. The scheme could not even conceivably have worked unless the umps were colossal idiots.

Waaaaaaaay late to balk chat (thanks school and other poo poo), but there was a balk call on a Brewer pitcher earlier this year that... you know, actually was a balk and not some "oh he twitched the wrong way". He started throwing to first, decided not to mid throw, realized "OH gently caress" and threw it, but by that point he was already called for it.

It was crazy to see such a blatant one that wasn't controversial at all.

quote:

I don’t believe the story, given the world we live in. I don’t believe it, for this reason: Everybody is starving and hungry to sit in front of a camera and talk and be social justice warriors. And if a fan yelled loud enough in center field for Adam Jones to hear the N-word, I guarantee you we would’ve heard and seen fans around on CNN on MSNBC, they would’ve found multiple fans to talk about what a racist piece of junk Boston is.

quote:

“I spent most of my adult life in baseball parks. I heard the N-word out of my black teammates’ mouths about 100 million times,” Schilling continued. “For somebody to talk loud enough for Adam Jones to hear the N-word in center field, other people would have heard it.

“If somebody did say it, we’re going to see it and hear about it, and I would apologize to Adam Jones for doubting him, but until then, I think this is bulls—t. I think this is somebody creating a situation.”
