My favorite part of the reveal is they kept in the fact that it comes out pretty casually. Like in the manga the big reveal was in some small background speech bubbles.

Yeah, I loved that. Of course, the revelation of their "mission" being able to be put on hold if Eren comes with them raises more questions than it answered. How did they know that humanity had someone like Eren from the outset? How did they find the particular training class he entered? Why does it really matter in the grand scheme of things when Eren's not particularly powerful as a titan anyway? Monkey Trouble: I can't think of who it could possibly be, if it's someone that we're supposed to care about. The similarity in appearance to Ikari Gendou makes me initially think Eren's dad, but he invented the 3DMG, right? So he wouldn't have been surprised that it existed? Also, he would have known that humans can talk. Maybe he was collecting it to show off to his buddies at wherever he now lives as something cool he made once? It would have to have been someone who was out of the picture since before we met the characters at the outset of the show, at very least. Episode spoiler: EDIT: Also, now that all of the really scary titans are sapient, they lose a bit of their horror factor. Like "obscenely powerful, unthinking terrors with vaguely human shapes" are a lot scarier than "controlled military assets pointed at humanity's enclave" for soem reason.

Really? It's been a while since I saw S1 and I may be misremembering some other anime, but I thought it was a specific point of shame that "I can't even use the thing my daddy invented". Strike Witches had a similar plotline, but that'd be a really weird thing to confuse with SnK.

Kytrarewn posted:Anime-only: My speculation; He's gonna end up being a king or some dumb poo poo. His dad was probably part of whatever the human-titan civilization was and ran away. Maybe he was the only one who knew how to make the hybrids or something and Eren is the key to figuring it out. I loved this episode. I love how calm the reveal was. I loved the animation in the last few minutes. I loved the cliffhanger fight ending. I loved Mikasa trying to murder the poo poo out of them.

Grisha didn't invent 3DMG. He did however cure a plague that was spreading through the walls, so he was well known as someone who saved a ton of lives.

The beast titan looks like Eren's dad due to the way his eyes are drawn, almost like Eren's dad's glasses (at least to me). Eren's dad clearly knew more than he was letting on, but I really doubt it would pull the poo poo the beast titan has. ETA: New question. If they're both titan shifters, why did they let their friend get eaten? Maera Sior fucked around with this message at 20:17 on May 6, 2017 |

3DMG was invented in Attack On Titan Zero which takes place before season one, although it looks like that hasn't had an update in a year or more.

Anime Only but I played the Koei-Tecmo game. Episode stuff: I thought for sure that Armin had noticed Reiner's odd behavior during their first encounter with the female titan. With Annie, he noticed right away that she was using Marco's 3DMG during the inspection. Also, going to speculate that Eren won't be able to win against the armored titan if the colossal titan keeps all his friends busy. It will probably be a rad MMA fight regardless.

^^ The author is incredibly good at constantly foreshadowing things with the smallest actions that are hilarious with hindsight. There's a couple "oh poo poo, really?" things from season 1 that will only become relevant in like season 3 or 4 at the earliest. Now that the cat's out of the bag, it should be said that some dude reading the manga successfully called this twist, complete with detailed analysis of why, some time shortly after Eren transformed for the first time, months and years before even the manga reached that point.

This was really the best part of it. I changed the page and had a moment of mental whiplash and was like "W..what?" and had to turn the page back to process it. It was all extremely obvious in hindsight, because the armored titan literally has hidden meanings in basically everything he says and does. quote:haha no we're not this is only the beginning of the crazy poo poo the series'll do. Anyone seen the live action movies? Are they spoiley or like a whole other universe? Are they even any good? Edit: Also probably obvious observation but we're totally going to have a long boring part now where eventually Eren finds out that somehow by his just existing as a pseudo-titan thing he indirectly caused the attack 5 years ago and he is going to spend many episodes blaming himself where nothing interesting happens besides that. Manga reader here, and they did the reveal scene so well. I knew it was coming and was still on the edge of my seat through it all. One of the things I've been looking the most forward to seeing animated was Mikasa attacking Reiner and Bertholdt. I know that practically she's just trying to kill them before they can transform, but here attacking them like that always felt very personal to me and the way they animated it with the music they scored it to did it justice.

Well, I called Bertholdt, but I was still on the fence about Reiner. I really didn't want to believe, but the hair don't lie. This show is amazing, but I'd be driven mad having to look back for anything conceivably contextualized in a different way. There's never going to be a guarantee that something somebody said will stick. Real hints like Annie's detour in season one are more convincing. Oh and I'm an anime only viewer, if it wasn't obvious.

I read the manga straight after I finished with Season 1 of the anime. In the anime thread, people had speculated about Reiner being the Colossal Titan. I read through these chapters on the edge of my seat, like, "Is he, or isn't he?!" and decided that he wasn't after he punched the titan in the face, incorrectly assuming he would just turn into a titan instead of get that near death. I didn't even THINK about the colossal titan. So when Reiner revealed that he was the Colossal Titan and Bertholdt was the Colossal Titan, I had the craziest sensation of both "Oh, I guessed wrong, he really is the titan" and "WHAT THE gently caress HE'S THE TITAN?" at once. Anime-only: So, what does it mean for Titan Politics that Ymir ate Bert and Ernie's buddy? (I'm making a wild assumption that that's the case, since they went to the trouble to show off that scene? Is she from the Beast Titan's faction? Is she from a third faction? As seen in the image at the top of the page, it's pretty clear that Bert, at least, was scared enough for his life to give up his subterfuge during that attack. Ymir's history before Christa is something about which we know nothing, except that somehow she became a pariah.

Btw, for the informal poll, I'm a manga reader, but only up to the end of the arc after this one, which is chapter 69 (2015)/90 (current) as it was incredibly painful to get to really good cliffhangers and be on the edge of my seat for a month at a time. I'm planning to buy the next volume tomorrow and continue on.

I don't read the manga, I just want to parrot that the reveal was amazing. "Hey, Bertholdt and I were the two titans that smashed the place up 5 years ago. Wanna hang out?" One of the things I love about the series is when it gets psychological and Reiner is straight up losing his mind. It speaks to something that a man with all the power in the world, can sit alone on the apex of the world and go bug out crazy. There is no one character that can be raised up as a fascist superhero, man must stand with others in order to remain whole.

So I guess that this confirms some stuff and strongly indicates other things. I think this is a list of things that we can chalk up at this point: 1. There's a faction or several factions of titan-shifters that come from beyond the wall. Reiner indicates that he wouldn't have attacked if he knew humans weren't lovely. So clearly he came from outside and had no contact with humanity before that. They want to destroy humanity for some unknown reason. 2. There are probably different "villages" of titan-shifters. Reiner and Bert didn't know about Ymir, Monkey Trouble doesn't know about 3d gear and who knows what Ymir knows. 3. Ymir ate Reiner and Berts friend. This is probably the reason she's a pariah. She may have lost control when in Titan form and stumbled across them without knowing about them and then got banished for it, being exiled to the human world. 4. Ymir and Reiner both know about the ability to turn humans into Titans. They both tried stopping Connie from figuring that out.

I went into this episode expecting the CG to be atrocious because I read the thread first. That was like barely 25 frames before it switched back to handdrawn, you people are babies. Berserk was way worse.
