Desperado Bones posted:it was in the news (facebook) so it was totally true. There's this perception that the internet is something like a kind of TV with more channels (no matter that "don't believe everything you see on TV" is a thing that people have been repeating since the dawn of that medium). See also the proliferation of youtube people who target kids and constantly drop n-bombs, and parents who either don't know or don't care. Also poo poo like this.

HAT FETISH posted:I really wish there were an easy way to convince people to stop living like this. Like ok I learn about plenty of news stories on twitter, but the key difference is that my first response is always to immediately run a search on it and see what public discussion/mainstream reportage on the topic looks like. I was loving horrified when I first realised that a not insignificant number of people get their news from Facebook and do absolutely nothing to verify it. If my own relatives are any indication, a lot of these people don't even bother clicking through and just rush into the comments to let everyone know they think it's disgraceful that Radical Political Muslims are murdering butchers who sell pork or whatever. Your parents in 1997: Don't trust anyone you meet or anything you read on the internet. Your parents in 2017: I know this is true because I saw it on facebook.

And the ones pointing out positive reviews for the Daniel Craig movies for giving Bond complexity and more emotions than "Suave badass who fears nothing and never fails." Not that I think they're better "Bond films". Just as films, the character is deeper.

The saddest part is people aren't even getting their news from fake news website articles, they get their news from fake news headlines and nothing else.

I posted a variant of this in response to someone's mom linking one of those clearly bullshit consumer panic things, and immediately got dogpiled by her entire family for being unnecessarily mean. Telling people they're being gullible is obstructing their oh-so-precious right to an opinion.

Bond drinks enough in the books to get brain damage. The author had hand tremors from drinking, so he couldn't stir his drinks.

Then a quick Google debunks both of them.
