Corsi isn't an advanced stat. It's shots. It's just shots.

Baseball is basically just a series of one on one matchups that lends itself very well to statistical analysis. Hockey is played on ice. There are lots of foreign participants. Big bodies are present. Truculence is a factor. You have to play the right way.

the rehabilitation of justin schultz's reputation also had little to do with his fancy stats and everything to do with his traditional stats - 12G/39A/51P/+27 in this last season, which puts him in the top 10 for all of those stats among d-men except goals

From the analytics conference yesterday by far the coolest advanced stats thing was from SMT, the company that introduced the glowing Fox puck. They used IR tracking during the world cup and were able to create 3D game data, which leads to stuff like which players can pick corners in game situations, which players can get open in scoring areas (whether or not their teammates get them the puck), which players are effective at blocking high-danger shots, how fast different types of shots are (and how fast different players shoot the puck in game situations), etc. It's probably 10+ years away from really being used but that stuff is incredibly cool and not just shots as a substitute for possession. e: Also Timo Seppa had a talk about text mining scouting reports to improve drafting. It was really cool, a novel way of looking at the stats vs scouts question. http://statsportsconsulting.com/main/wp-content/uploads/TextMiningScoutingNHLDraftAnalyticsFeb2017.pdf Turns out scouts are pretty good at their jobs, it just doesn't always translate to how teams actually draft. Glad I'm not gonna be able to watch the game tonight. Gut-shots like game 5 was take teams out of serieses. Expect the Oilers to be listless and uncoordinated.

Best part about the Jultz redemption is that everyone knew it was going to happen because Edmonton was (is?) a wasteland of squandered talent that only very very recently turned things around. Oil fans on this very board were adamant that he was an awful player and would never be any good because they could not bear the fact that maybe their franchise was very bad with shaping young talent.

At most it's a penalty. It's just frustrating to see it happen. Anyways, Oilers are done: https://twitter.com/frank_seravalli/status/861349882845552640 No Klefbom, no Sekera, that's it. Refs hosed us over Games 4 and 5, and now there's no way the Oilers D can hold up with both Klefbom and Sekera out.

I mean that and for teams to make actual educated decisions on who to play, who's worth money and who not to sign. IE: the opposite of the David Nonis leafs. e: or the Bergevin Canadiens e: also Schultz's "redemption" isn't even anything noteworthy. He thrives in sheltered minutes, the oilers refused to shelter him apart from his third season with them. He's also taking advantage of an effective powerplay in Pittsburgh. It's not hard to figure out. Edmonton tried playing him like a number one guy and refused to budge. Technetium fucked around with this message at 03:26 on May 8, 2017 |
