And now for something completely different

quote:

“We will have a doctrine of retaliation when it comes to Russian cyberattacks or any other kind of attacks,” Macron’s official foreign policy adviser Aurélien Lechevallier told me. “This means we are ready to retaliate against cyberattacks — not only in kind but also with any other conventional measure or security tool.”

A personal friend of the newly elected president since their university days at L’Ecole Nationale D’Administration, Lechevallier is a former diplomatic adviser to the mayor of Paris and a former cultural attaché in Beirut.

Macron’s centrist En Marche campaign believes it was the victim of a sustained Russian digital propaganda campaign, intended to spread fake news and smear Macron as a sexual deviant and the tool of an oligarchic “Rothschild” plot (in a reference to his spell as a banker at Rothschild in Paris). This culminated in a gigantic hack of En Marche, with documents dumped online only hours before France’s formal electoral media blackout began, which campaign staff said carried Moscow’s electronic fingerprints.

“Cyberhacks and info-ops would make you take a very dim view of the person governing Russia, even if you had no prejudices before you started campaigning,” said François Heisbourg, chairman of the council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, who has been advising Macron on defense and security.

The candidate himself had no hard views on the Kremlin, Macron’s closest foreign policy advisers told me at the beginning of the campaign — a view echoed by Heisbourg. “To my understanding, he didn’t have any particularly strong feelings on foreign affairs in general,” Heisbourg said. “He hadn’t made any particular statements on China or on Russia. He hadn’t identified himself as being from a values-based or a realpolitik school. He came with a low base of knowledge and no biases.”
“The Russian attacks have backfired,” said Bruno Tertrais, deputy director of La Fondation Pour La Recherche Politique, who has been closely involved in both Macron’s foreign policy and defense expert group. “They have hardened him … and they have hardened his views on Russia.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday sent a congratulatory message to French President-elect Emmanuel Macron after his victory on Sunday.

In a statement, Putin wished Macron “good health, well-being and success” as president, adding that “overcoming mutual distrust and joining efforts to ensure international stability and security is especially important.”

Macron took a hard line on Russia during the campaign, accusing his rivals of kowtowing to Moscow. It was widely suspected that the Kremlin supported Macron’s far-right rival Marine Le Pen during the campaign.

In the run-up to the second round vote, Macron’s team barred Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik from campaign rallies because of their “systematic desire to issue fake news and false information,” a Macron campaign aide said.

On Friday, two days before the runoff vote, a trove of Macron’s campaign emails was leaked on the internet. A New York-based cyber intelligence consultancy, Flashpoint, said there were indications a hacker group with ties to Russian military intelligence was behind the attack.

Uh probably to monitor his activities and more completely understand who he was working for and trying to accomplish. Also if Obama had set the process in motion then this whole fiasco wouldn't be blowing up in Trump's face.

Which is why they should give Flynn immunity and get him to testify under oath. Lord knows what he can tell us about what Trump knew and when.

Even better, Trump could try to prevent him from testifying and create a Watergate situation.

His clearance wasn't revoked because he wasn't fired for being in bed with Russians. After he separated from the military, his clearance went inactive just like anyone else's. It probably wasn't worth the hassle to revoke an inactive clearance and it was on the Trump clock that his clearance would have been reactivated.

It also would have almost undoubtedly have been painted as partisan politics, considering that Flynn was Trump's guy well before Obama and fuckface met

The way I understand it, he had to have it reactivated/reauthorized in August 2016. That is probably where flags should have been raised. But when Obama and Yates both told Trump that there was a problem with Flynn, someone in the security game should have at least known about it. Did the FBI know Flynn had issues since they were already investigating Trump's campaign? If so why didn't the clearance investigators know? If they did, why did they clear him? Were they notified by the Justice department when Yates warned Trump? Were they notified when Obama warned Trump?

See a trend here? Somewhere along the lines, it looks like something broke down in keeping track of this rear end in a top hat.

I am not saying someone did something intentionally wrong. Or even did something wrong. But maybe, we need to find out how and if there are holes in the system that he managed to crawl through, we probably should fix that.

Exactly. He was fired in 2014, and retired shortly thereafter. It would be highly unusual to revoke someone's clearance just because they're a lovely leader. His questionable activities began in late 2015 while his clearance was on inactive status and while he was not working for the government. The granting authority would have had to be incredibly proactive to not only discover that he was lobbying for a foreign country several years after he left the organization, but also to begin the bureaucratic procedures necessary to revoke his clearance. Unless Flynn disclosed his lobbying (which he didn't), or another agency inadvertently discovered that he was conducting these kinds of things, nobody would really know.

The president's argument is, as always, incredibly stupid.
