Yeah I really liked his character arc a ton in the original and they did a generally good job of giving all the girls a different reason to like him other than ~just because~

So, that game is Taisho x Alice, an otome game that has been in translation for a while and delayed for months. It finally released today, and the translation is hot garbage, with the English voice acting for most of the characters being eerily similar to the owner of the company releasing the game. Yes, an English dub, with no Japanese option, presumably because the Japanese voice acting would have actually cost them extra money to use, and who wants to spend money when releasing a game?

Wasn't Utawarerumono 1 supposed to be based off of Ainu legends or something? I've always wondered if knowing those would make things make more sense.

Endorph
Jul 22, 2009

utawarerumono uses a lot of ainu culture and language and names and stuff, but a lot of the plot twists are just jrpg magic stuff and not really anything to do with ainu legends, at least not textually. You could make a meta argument about how some things fit into the marginalization and ignorance of Ainu history and culture in modern Japan, especially with some of the implications in the first game's backstory, but there's no Ainu legend that just straight up fits 1:1 with the first game's ending.

I played it and it was not that good. For my reference, I had not watched the anime because I think I read at the time that it was more of a separate story, but that was a lie. I watched the first season after I got sick of the game and it didn't retroactively make the game any better in my opinion. If you liked the anime then you might like this story set in that world, but I think after I watched it I was confused as to when this is supposed to take place.

I got bored after the intro but now it's on PC so why not? I watched S1 and S2 but the VN takes place b/t the 2 shows so you'll be fine. It's not good but not extremely bad either. I felt like it was a series of missed opportunities considering it had one of my favorite authors/scenario writers on the team and cool setting.

FYI: Someone emailed Primula, the original Japanese developers of this game, about the terrible localization and the shady practices of the translators (including ripping off fan TLs and summaries off of tumblr and such), and Primula said they were going to work into this. Next day, the localization company, E2, deleted their facebook page.

So, uh, some poo poo is going down here.

Oh. Oh god those eyes. Is the original art available in the Steam release? Those eyes are horrible.

But Symphonic Rain is good. Or, rather, one route and one character in Symphonic Rain are good enough to carry the rest of the game which ranges from mediocre to rage-inducing.

The songs are really good, though, and the rhythm game element is a great way to relieve the stress of the plot. It's worth playing, in my opinion. Just skim all the routes until the last two.

Edit: Okay maybe the eyes don't look horrible in all the art but I still don't get why the artist would change just the eyes while leaving everything else untouched. It makes the faces, which were meant for bigger eyes, look sort of off.

After installing this new update, for me at least it goes into the sequence at the end of Epilogue 2 ("you" starts playing) but stays on a black screen the whole duration and never actually plays the credits.

So I posted this in the PS Vita thread before learning this thread allows M-rated games, just no porn.

So back when I got my PSTV to play Persona 4 Golden, someone recommended Neptunia to me and I tried Re;birth 2. That was a bust but more relevantly, while looking at Idea Factory International, I found out they were coming out with this game in a few short months.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB-Y_YUsQTU

Well I decided to preorder it and it just came out yesterday.I've never played a VN in my life unless Ace Attorney counts. I figured this was as good a place to start as any. I liked the music in the trailer, liked the premise (Tokugawa period Japan is neat), I like pretty boys and samurai...(Saito sure looks better here than he did in Rurouni Kenshin. The years hadn't been kind to him)

I've played a little bit of it - up until Keisuke uses Super Samurai Serum on himself. I'm not sure how long the game is or how long VN's typically run. I figure these games rely a lot on replayability. Which is fine, I'm just idly wondering how long an initial playthrough lasts.

YT Comments suggest this game has come out in a few different forms. I neverheard of it before this trailer, though. Maybe they only came out in Japan or something? Has anyone here played any iteration of this?

I played the psp version and I just got the new one too. This game is one of the longer VNs I've played. Like many hours for a single route. I don't remember how many hours I sank into the original but this adds more characters so it will be even longer. I can't wait to get a new route but it's been a long time and I can't even remember the original routes so it's practically all new anyway.

IIRC total time was 30 hrs? Each route is approx 5-7 hrs except for the times where you get bad ends. Also, you will need to buy the 2nd half of the game whenever that is localized for the complete VN :v:

For anyone else, you want to buy the PS4 complete edition called Hakuouki Shinkai Fuukaden to save money since it's all on one game and not $80 total. The original PSP title has been ported to every conceivable platform because of Otomate.

IDK if they plan on releasing the PS4 game overseas but that'd contain ALL the complete stories and FD. Art is better than most VN but you have no idea how many times they remade this game due to popularity instead of actually bringing over new series.

Wait, so how much am I missing out by not having this "second half"? Does this game really end on like a cliffhanger and I need the sequel to see everything?

Also I totally missed the fact there was a Limited Edition release of this game... Ah well, all I really care about is the soundtrack. In my experience you can usually get bits and pieces from LE's/CE's off ebay so I'll just see about doing that sometime.

Yes, here's the full list:

Hakuoki ~Demon of the Fleeting Blossom~(PSP) then ported to Andriod, iOS with a new scenario
Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi (3DS) includes some new POV stories
Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi (PS3) contains the FD and better gfx

Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds (Vita) contains more LI and CGs only the 1st half of the story since the 2nd half is separate from the Traditional vs Western outfits. You will want to buy the 2nd half when they release it for a complete VN since it cuts off at Ch 5.

Meantime, they're planning a complete PS4 edition which contains the 2 prior Vita games in one disc. http://www.otomate.jp/hakuoki/shinkai/ps4/

If you want the best cost/value I'd wait for the PS4 game but it's still TBA.

The 2nd Vita game will most likely be localized but not certain how long for the PS4 title since it's WIP in Japan. Perhaps, a year or so?
