The Glass thing is probably AV's influence, and I'll take your word on the Stralman thing - but here's the thing about both of those: those are ultimately moves the GM wears, not the coach. Your GM should not be beholden to the coach, no matter how much input the coach has into the process - if you have, and continue to have bad players on the roster, its your GMs job to fix it.

For sure, like I said I think it can be argued he had a hand in it, but Sather made the moves and he put the Rangers in a tough position going forward.

JawKnee posted:

so why isn't Gorton fixing the issue if Sather was the problem?

Takes awhile, I think this last summer was the first one that Gorton really had free reign to do stuff with. It's hard to move guys like Girardi or Staal, the FA market for right handed defensemen was kinda crap and the Rangers are limited by their existing big contracts, and I think it's also totally possible that Gorton is OK with the vets on D as well (which is a frustrating and terrifying thought).

He's actually gone out and got some prospects that were mentioned earlier (Pionk and Bereglazov) who could push for a roster spot in training camp, and Graves should also be pushing for a spot this year as well, but there needs to be a place for them. Do they re-sign Smith (who was good for them and probably won't break the bank)? Or do they let him walk and "waste" more draft picks. Do they trade Klein or say "oh he'll bounce back". How is Holden (who blatantly struggled in the playoffs) treated going forward? Are there any spots left to compete for in camp or are they already locked up before the offseason even starts? Gorton's the one that has to make those decisions but I hope both he and AV can be honest when evaluating the roster. Girardi and Staal aren't getting any better, they're not going to bounce back, and they take up like $11 mill in cap space. that's gotta be fixed somehow

e: last year Girardi was playing hurt most of the year with a cracked knee cap so that gave both AV and Gorton the excuse of "we need to give him a chance to come back healthy" which is dumb but that's what they did...but even more dumb was that AV played Girardi so much on a loving busted knee cap when he could barely skate

thanks, that's very informative. Seems like the rags are at that crossroads that competitive teams reach where they either make some saavy trades to retool on the fly, or double-down on what worked in the past and end up stagnating.

e: OR get obscenely lucky with prospects like the loving Blackhawks/Penguins

The Rags have a chance to be competitive for the next 15 years because of goaltending. Shestyorkin is looking real legit.

Yeah pretty much, especially with Lundqvist aging. If they re-tooled the defense and tweaked things enough they could probably get another good run in, but will have to start making decisions about players up front as well. They've got some good goalie prospects but they're at least a couple of years away.

Yup, hopefully he makes the sting of Lundqvist declining less of an issue, but he still has 2 years on his contract in the KHL I believe

1st place in the Northwest was hardly difficult that season and they had one of the worst PP's in the league and in general looked stale and un-imaginative. AV was done and it was time for a change. Granted, in hindsight, had I know they would hire Torts, I would have preferred them to keep AV!!. I still remember teasing my die-hard canucks friend that 'they're gonna hire Torts!!' only to get almost beaten up in return.

Honestly I don't think there's a lot Gorton could do before this offseason WRT Staal/Girardi. Now that the end of those contracts is kind of sort of close and the buyouts are lower I think something may be able to be done. The NTC/NMCs Sather gave out did not help the situation.

HOPEFULLY it's clear now that they're a huge part of the problem. But I guess we will see.

I think Gorton is a good GM and AV is a drat good coach. But he's also a big dumb idiot sometimes.

Could Ilya Kovalchuk make sense for Detroit Red Wings?

yes, the wings, a basement team, should invest long term in a 34 year old player.

helene st. james is such a loving awful reporter. like, no talent or valuable insight offered, ever. she either talks up some eklund-esque free agent/trade speculation, or regurgitates poo poo fed to her by the wings organization.

i imagine the powerplay falloff has somewhat to do with the loss of Mikael Samuelsson, Christian Ehrhoff, a broken Ryan Kesler who missed 31 games because of injuries, a Daniel Sedin that was still suffering from the concussion he received from Duncan Keith, and a Henrik Sedin that only dressed and played by the end of the season so he could maintain his ironman streak.

Quick reminder that most Wings fans still think that they are a major draw for free agents and only a star player or two away so this was probably a smart article to write to get clicks with minimal push back. I agree that she sucks as a reporter but the Detroit media as a whole is way too complacent and forgiving with how the team has been run.

The Ticket has always been full of Wings apologists. Maybe that changed at the end of the season(I moved away from Detroit in December and never bothered to check back in on it) but they've always pretty forgiving.

Pierre was on the radio here in NY today saying the Rangers need to go all in to try and get Tavares away from the Islanders. I'd probably stop watching hockey if that happened.

I mean there's no chance of it happening and I truly believe he re-signs soon after he's able to (July 1st) but gross.
