it would appear that maxkey has resolved/improved the SHIF T kerning issue they had on the original runs: original round sa cyan:  preprod sa ashen samples:  preprod sa portland samples:  i've got a set of sa ashen on the way that should land in june, i'll report back when i get it

current theory on geekhack (i think? i forget which one) is that maxkey is using old comptec sa profile molds and tooling comptec was originally the french parent company of signature plastics prior to sp employees buying out the american side of the business, and they closed last year. they moved most of the assets to another french company, but it would make sense that they sold off the sa profile stuff since who the gently caress still uses that maxkey surfaced like 6 months later, and that SHIF T issue was present on older signature plastics stuff, so it's possible that glorious china is basically not even cloning but using the same manufacturing tooling as sp

the gently caress? are they switch enclosed leds or pcb mounted leds? you should complain to whoever sold it before busting out the soldering iron, but at least if it's a switch led it's fairly easy to swap it out. if it's mounted on the pcb, i hope you're handy with a reflow over/toaster oven

I've done plenty of rework and replacing one won't be difficult for me replacement leds are really easy to find, but it's very likely the replacement isn't going to match the original color/intensity perfectly, so i might end up with a weird looking key. All of the standard stuff i'm finding seems to be circular, whereas the varmilo OE leds are rectangular

in non mechanical but still interesting keeb news, there's an optimus popularis/mini clone that's about to come out it's basically a 4-5" display with buttons on top but it looks like it works well. it's $150 so there's an argument to be made for just making macros instead, but i've always been interested in the original optimus stuff. worst case scenario it'd chill next to my leap motion in a drawer somewhere.
