The reasons people are on anti-depressants are many and complicated, and it would be unwise to put it down to one factor, even one as broad as capitalism.

Yes. Yes it does. Forget brotherhood. Forget family. You can buy your happiness. You can have this, this and that. If you don't you're a bad person. A failure. You need to have this. You must have this to be part of something. Don't you want to be part of something? Well to get that something you need to work. You need to work to be good. You want to be good don't you? But remember unions are bad, workers shouldn't be uppity, and those people need to know their place. But remember to buy the thing so you are good.

Me: I would like to exchange money for a good and/or service. A doctor: Sir, you are insane, you have capitalism disease. I suggest you pay me money to cure it for you. Me: Okay, I trust you, because you are a doctor.

It might actually lead you to illness. That is if you get obsessive about it like this old banker/sailor/businessman I used to treat when I worked with the elderly. He at one point told me a story about some pants he found in a puddle of water he found on the docks which he had his wife fix up for him because hey, free pants.

Granted, one reason why people are on so many anti-depressants is that they are cheaper than actual therapy and they are practically just throw at patients. I am sure many of the people on SSRIs almost certainly benefit from other treatment or even simple talk therapy but that takes time and money. Also, once you live out of the states, you realize how competitive and lonely a country it is. There is a real mental toll that comes with extreme competitive individualism.

BCR posted:Yes. Yes it does. I'm pretty sure "worrying about measuring up to society's expectations" isn't specific to capitalism - it sounds like something that would date back to caveman days when being shunned by one's peers would often result in starving to death. And it's not as if other economic systems wouldn't lead to a completely different set of social standards for people to lose sleep over.

Yea and when you have working examples of socialism far outperforming capitalism, like in Venezuela, it's really weird people are still sticking with the failure of capitalism. A real fuckin' mystery here, someone should get scooby and the gang on this.
