The whole point of my posting in general is that "Deserve" is a fake concept that we made up to get children to do stop fighting with each other and behave.

Also I already specifically said that they don't deserve it in a post you already quoted.

Are you saying that normal people go around telling junkies how pointless their existence is? It seems much more normal to me to keep it to yourself and just let them overdose on fentanyl.

Are there any actual good arguments against a basic income and/or alternatives (besides full socialism now) because all I read in the last few pages before the opioid stuff was a whole bunch of slippery slope bullshit about conservatives destroying the social safety net, none of which has anything to do with the concept of a basic income itself.

The issue isn't that anyone seriously believes that our society can continue on as it is without a basic income of some sort, but the problem comes from the idea that a basic income is the end of the changes needed, rather than the beginning. If we just stop at letting people have $12k/year or so even though they have absolutely no opportunities for further advancement in society due to automation creating the end of labor as we know it, you've essentially just created a permanent underclass living in circumstances just slightly good enough to stop them from revolting, but still at a permanent absolute minimum.

The main arguments against UBI from the right are that it is too expensive and would require tax increases, and that it disincentivizes work.

From the left, you have the actual communists who don't like it because it is still capitalist, and you have the fact that the versions of UBI supported by right-wingers is a bit lovely. Chapo Trap House this week made the argument that people receiving a UBI and not working would have no leverage to bargain with capitalists as they cannot deny them their labor - this argument kind of falls under the first category.

Coming up with counterarguments for each of these is an exercise for the reader - some of them are stupider than others.

Wait... no. With a good UBI and not working you explicitly can deny capitalists your labour. Just say "I won't work for that little, get bent, I can still eat thank you very much".

There's basically no way there is enough tax to support it in a country like Canada. Let's say you need to hand out 30k a year to each person so they can afford to live. That's more than the entire tax revenue in from citizens.

Unless we fundamentally change how we tax both citizens and businesses then we can not afford it. Unless of course we limit the payments to only the poor. Then we just have welfare again.

This is why most actual UBI proposals are closer to 12k than 30k, and are paid for by eliminating a ton of costly social services. Which is also a reason why these proposals are bad, because 12k a year isn't actually enough to live on unless you want to live in a filthy hovel and eat only the cheapest food.

They mean collectively denying capitalists our labor to drive systemic change. They are socialists and view all change as coming through class struggle. It's an undemocratic view, as a believer in democracy would simply say that systemic change comes from our votes. The Chapo folks are very cynical about both democracy and capitalism.
