My Hedge Knight with two stars in melee and brute got the drunkard event today. :black101::hf::cheers:

Someone asked a while back to see the drunkard event, so here was his:

On the one hand, :smith:. But on the other he can do gently caress off massive damage; I know at one point he hit a Fallen Hero in the head for 221. And even with a cumulative -10 to melee attack he's still standing at 88.

So do you guys find yourselves getting bored with chasing bandits and such and just turn on one of the noble houses? They are fun to raid and mess with in general, but I'm wondering if closing off a few towns is worth it. Thoughts?

I turned on a noble house by accident during my last playthrough. It was no big deal. Just don't go against the house whose cities you rely on for recruiting, trading or gear.

I just got the relations with a noble house I was enemies with back to neutral. It was just too annoying fighting or flying from engagements every time I passed through one of the major trading hubs.

Yeah they are beasts and a half if you run into them early game. Thankfully, if you retreat, they don't chase you; they're an event rather than a unit on the map.

Holy cow clearing the Goblin City suuuuuucks. 47 goblins is a lot to chew through, especially with four shamans doing everything in their power to make sure my men can't move ever. Even with some of my guys sitting at level 17 with melee scores in excess of 100 they'd miss their chances to break free of the vines, and it doesn't matter how much melee defense you have if you get hit with the bugs and goblin shivs. Had to retreat twice and still lost five good men in the final push, but I have my shiny gold hat.

When you hire/fire a Bro, does he disappear from the game forever or do they respawn eventually? Also I'm wondering if you can speed up the "churn" of available recruits by hiring/firing the cheap scrubs.

Necrosavants :stonk:

First time through the game, actually managed to get 12 men, 4 of them archers. Average was level 5-6s with some decent armor for my frontline guys. And then I fought these guys. My archers all got decapitated, some of my frontline broke, and I ended up with 1 guy standing (my most recent hire too - a hedge knight). 3 others survived being downed.

I then took an 1-skull escort contract (after hiring 2 more guys)... and now am left with just the hedge knight alive after running into a group of 8 brigands.

Tempted to restart, but eh, this hedge knight is doing some good work.

Yeah, if you hire everyone the pool refills the next day.
Hiring a couple of guys doesn't do that, though, and I'm not at all sure how the number of available/leftover recruits interacts with the number of new ones generated and old ones disappearing.

Has anyone else tried the various battle scenarios? While the actual battles are pretty ridiculous*, they give players a good idea of the kind of bullshit late-game enemies can throw at you, without the chance of wiping your party on the first encounter.

*even with decent gear, faceless 65 melee/65 ranged bros with zero perks against necrosavants/goblin shamans/ork warloads/ancient priests is madness. You can't even use the free endgame armor that well, since the generic scenario bros have about 100 fatigue and lack brawny. So a full helm + coat of plates/scales drops the generics down to ~40 fatigue before weapons and shields. Although the necrosavant scenario is actually doable if you know how to abuse the necrosavant AI and have good luck. Eight generic bros taking a walk in the woods against five necrosavants is a fun time.

EDIT:

Wizard Styles posted:

The scenarios were the first thing I tried, and that was not a good first impression the game made there. I actually put it down for a few weeks until I saw this thread and remembered I had it. I really don't know what they were thinking when they made these.

Probably about what an late-game crisis party should look like if when you lose a bro every third fight. With those kinds of losses, you'd end up with a mix of maille and heavy armor. Weapon selection would be a mix of high end raider weapons with a few weapons from bandit leaders. But most of the bros would be fairly low level. If anything, the scenarios show how losing a bro every third fight is completely unsustainable, and will leave the band unable to handle a late-game crisis encounter. I think this is the developer's biggest blind spot. They want a game where you can rebuild a band after horrifying losses. But the strategic gameplay is all about being gritty and "realistic", rather than making it fun to lose bros.

Mario wasn't sure if this Jeb guy was a good influence on Yoshi.

I think it's time to figure out brothers.

For ranged, it's really Hunters then everything else, and hunters are just affordable enough that if you want ranged attack, they're your guys. Sellswords are interesting, if you want glass cannons, skirmishers or archers with really solid defenses for higher end fun. Other classes need to be evaluated in terms of other benefits if you want to give them a ranged weapon because they need stars to be worth it.

Resolve is Adventurous Nobles, but they're expensive enough that a good roll on the second tier can probably end up as good if not better practically.

I think the most interesting discussions are what makes a good melee brother, what variations are good and cool, when to ditch a lower tier brother in favor of a recruit from a better class, and stuff like that.

Edit:

Also, I've got 13 dudes with a craven backup guy already, I really want to make room for a hunter, but did I just find a dodge tank to try out?

It is a bit, but those are the best drat defenses I've ever seen on a level 1 dude, so he's a lot more likely to make it to where I need him to get rolling.

I'd really love to know the statistics behind stat growth though. Do defenses have a slower progression, and do stars have a similar effect proportionally or do they make the same difference in absolute terms, which would make defense stars a huge deal.

Taerkar
Dec 7, 2002

kind of into it, really

I've got a short dagger guy that can solo an orc warrior. Throw on the Dodge perk, the reduced damage perk, and lone wolf and he enjoys a crazy good defense rating and is almost guaranteed to take half damage from any hit.

Oh, and overwhelm, because the odds cannot be stacked enough.

Two questions:

- Do NPCs have perm injuries? I've just encountered a Faction Sergeant( while helping his house beat up some brigands), and he clearly has a brain damage scar on his bald pate. It could be a cosmetic finesse to show that he's a veteran, but if experienced humans( or even greenskins) could also have perm injuries, that's kind of cool actually.

- Does Brawny aid the final calculation for the Duelist bonus? As in, armour costing less fatigue by way of Brawny means a greater overall defense in the Duelist calculation?
