I think everyone is conflating boring with bad. I really don't want the Sens to find anymore success, selfishly because I am a Pens fan but also as a fan of hockey. This is a copycat league and the more teams we have copying the 1-3-1 the objectively worse the on ice product will be. I understand the "whatever means necessary" approach a fan of a team has but if a style of play can make an Eastern Conference Final game have little to no excitement for a person with a vested interest, imagine how checked out a casual fan is going to be.

The trap isn't new, and Boucher has already taken a team to the ECF playing this kind of system (though not as well executed as the Sens are executing). It's a hard system to coach.

The 1-3-1 isn't any different than a good 1-2-2. Ottawa didn't happen upon some brilliant way to win. They're getting good goaltending and Karlsson owns.

I'm not acting like the trap is new, however it becomes more appealing as teams get faster and more skilled. Obstruction and removing time and space may be very hard to coach but that will not stop slower teams from trying to utilize it. Trap and clutch and grab is why I stopped watching hockey before and anytime I see that poo poo start to come back, I chicken little the hell out it. It would literally make hockey unwatchable to me and I like watching hockey.

the worst thing about the 1-3-1 is that the penguins defensemen are mostly so bad right now that if they tried the flyers thing and passed the puck back and forth without advancing it hainsey or maatta would probably just fumble it and turn it into a scoring chance against

I did enjoy watching probably the only dman left in the playoffs that Ryan can blow past, and of course that's who he goes up against in OT, lol.

I didn't think the game was necessarily boring, but probably lacked crazy rushes and wide open shots from bad defensive coverage. Overall the game was very structured. This is only game 1 and the teams are feeling each other out.

Literally happened in the first 3 minutes of play. Cole sat behind the net for 10-15 secs and then immediately turned it over without pressure by making an off target pass with too much pepper to the far wall.

SPACE FACE! SPACE FACE!

Has Ottawa ever had an actual good goalie, other than a few minutes of Hasek? It feels like they get these marginal guys who play above their head for a little while and then sag hard (Lalime, Emery, Aebischer, etc).

pens D are bad enough that OTT has a chance, but i still feel pretty good about pens over the course of the series. it felt like they were still trying to play against WSH, moving the puck too quickly and not taking advantage of the space OTT was giving them

i'm optimistic that sullivan will be able to adjust. i still think the pens have enough speed to play an effective chip n chase forecheck, especially if sullivan gets swaps sheary and kunitz, and if hagelin can come back in for one of the depth guys

They did drop the first one in regulation after they killed Bishop. OTT is not as good as TB was but the Pens are not as good as they were last year. But I'm gonna wait till after game two before I go start making my sandwich.

The Senators being in the playoffs is a fluke and we should play another 82 game season to test it. If they get in the playoffs now then I'm fine with it but it really feels to me like they don't deserve the spot right now.
