supposedly jared was working on that criminal justice reform stuff that most people were getting on board with before sessions hosed it up (including even the friggin koch bros) so it'll be interesting to see if jared ends up doing any pushback against sessions' efforts to bring back the 1980s

Interesting note about PA. By state law, no law enforcement can use mobile speed measuring devices except for the State Police. Local police can't used any kind of radar guns or anything like that. As a result, PA doesn't have speed trap locales. Also, one time I got pegged for doing 65 in a 25, while coasting down a hill on a straight country road with no intersections. It's basically a road surrounded by only wide ranging fields. I rarely ever do more than 10% over the limit, and I'm a super cautious law abiding driver, but I took it as a safe opportunity to speed for just a moment. I coasted to the top of the hill, dropping to about 20, then got on the gas on the down slope. My plan was to coast from the bottom of the hill to the traffic light about a mile away. I was already coasting when I hit the bottom of the hill, I saw a State Trooper perched in a barn. I knew he got me. He pulled me over, said he was only going to write me up for 15 over, because he didn't want to cause me too much trouble, and wished me a happy birthday two days ahead. That was over 15 years ago. That's the only ticket I've gotten in 20 years of driving in PA.

Amniotic posted:External markers of success indicating that you're one of god's elect sure seems like it fits in well with American calvinism. Having grown up in an extremely Calvinist church, I can tell you that the main theological difficulty is reconciling God's goodness with his seemingly arbitrary favor. They really believe that there's nothing you can do about if you don't happen to be chosen and vice versa. They make a big deal out of certain Biblical passages, like God hating Esau for no particular reason and damning him his whole life while letting his kinda lovely brother get everything. And yet, you definitely shouldn't ponder that too much because God is good good good and he can read your thoughts, and if you were chosen you probably wouldn't have doubting thoughts like that.
