Only 1 atom being split wouldn't create an explosion of that size though? It doesn't make sense. Maybe the explosion in the last panel is a metaphor that represents the effect of the divorce on their loved ones.

The first panel almost looks like it's definitely the tire and not a hat. There could have been some value in having the hat revealed in panel four for the punchline, but it's clearly in panel two as well.
