Every now and again I check on his new comic- not to read it just to see if it's still going. I'm always kind of pleasantly surprised to see it is.

Star Power is just kind of boringly competent from what very little I've looked at it. I'm not sure how good or bad it is, but I remember the thread lost all steam with it because it was Mookie being very professional, possibly due to having a filter of another artist directing his efforts.

What I read of Star Power was really boring and wasn't good or anything, but yeah it's not like, notably terrible either. Has a lot of the more inoffensive flaws of Mookie's writing in it, but doesn't have him throwing in all his fetishes and hangups unfiltered. I think that's 50/50 from not working alone and having a protagonist who isn't an obvious author stand in.

I find it hard to dislike Questionable Content. I don't know why that is. There's certainly enough to dislike about it.

Jeph Jacques seems to have a certain artistic timidity. The impression I get is that he doesn't like to leave his characters afraid and alone for very long. He knows that a big part of a writer's job is to make their characters suffer, but he always seems to be in a hurry to return them to relative stability and comfort. He likes writing about people being kind and supportive to each other.

One of the big risks in a webcomic is that the subject matter will be something that the cartoonist finds a lot more interesting to write about than the audience does to read about. It's a risk because these are things typically made by amateurs for free; having fun creating it is often a precondition for it existing at all, because it's not like there's a paycheck serving as an alternative source of motivation. All webcomics are fundamentally self-indulgent in that respect. But there's a lot of work out there where that indulgence, and not the artist's skill or diligence, is what holds the work back.

Edit: the advanced form of this disease is people using their comic as therapy

Since we're reminiscing about DD, one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is the demonization of Siegfried. Siegfried was some sort of "honorable bully" character, and he had some sort of redemption arc where he was learning to be less violent and more open-minded. Except that he got really popular with the fanbase, more popular than Mookie wanted him to be (heck he was one of the only characters with some depth -- purely by cargo-culting accident, mind you -- because he was kinda morally ambiguous). So Mookie got pissed off by that and went full steam backward, going out of his way to make him into an irredeemable monster, and that was gloriously stupid.

This is why DD could support and maintain a mock thread where all else fails.

No matter how awful it got, there was always this charm to it that made you really, REALLY love hating it.

The consistent updates helped too. Mookie being a pretty alright guy with some weird fetishes also helped the thread from getting too icky or personal.

The consistent updates and something like 90% of the updates having some novel way mookie hosed up helped a lot.

Yeah DD updating almost every day was probably the biggest thing that kept the thread going. Mock threads really quickly take downward spirals the moment there's a lack of new material.

Yeah, I don't recall the DD mock thread doing much digging into his life outside the comic beyond "checking the contents of the /images/ file on the website". (And finding lots of photos of girls covered in fake blood and stuff. :staredog: )

That was kinda the days before social media and such really took off, so not as much out there.

I have fond memories of the DD mock thread. Perfect storm of really poor comic that should have ended years ago combined with a rapid and consistent update schedule. Now that it's over I can sorta look back on it well, and I'd have applauded Mookie if I thought he did it intentionally.

Okay, I quite liked the fact that Astral Aves just dropped you into the middle of a world and let you pick up the details as it went on, and I've always felt that it was building up to kicking off the main story with a nice, slow burn.

But with the villain apparently making his move and the main cast just kind of ignoring him, stalling him with their hijinks and generally not making any kind of plot happen for quite a few pages now, I'm starting to have my doubts.

I haven't been able to keep anything with AA's story straight in ages. To be sure, I haven't spent much effort on it, but mostly I'm just reading for the ongoing joke of "being polite and considerate is the secret to immense magical accomplishment" and the chance that Pippa might elbow-drop something.

Even on that level, it's pretty fun.

It's from Patrick Alexander's Hilarity Comics, and while it's hilarious in-context, I was hesitant to even link to a full comic with a panel where a man sheds a tear of triumph as a crowd joyously watches him loving a baby.

So, dumb question, does anyone know any good video game webcomics? Like, just a place to get kicks at a joke about Zelda. Used to be every other comic out there was a Penny Arcade ripoff, but now most of them are fine and I have to agree with some of the bad webcomic folk that a significant part of PA's recent output is jokes about fatherhood. Awkward Zombie is a good laugh but it's only weekly and I just want to laugh at a Mario joke now and again.

e: And I don't mean stuff like Badnix that rips on video games as a medium, I mean dumb jokes about existing games. I usually find a lot popping up on Facebook from Tumblr but Tumblr's format is poo poo for following comics.

He hasn't really done any webcomicking since he started doing professional comics work, but I enjoyed the copy of Magical Game Time by Zac Gorman when I bought it at ECCC. It's not all dumb video game jokes, though; lots of non-joke type comics are in there too. Tumblr format, though.

Castle Vidcons hasn't updated in a while, but it spontaneously updates occasionally, usually when there's big game hardware-related news, though there's nothing about the Switch. And sometimes the strips are pretty opaque if you don't know what was happening in the news when it was posted.

The GamerCat is pretty meh, but it updates once a week and ticks the 'dumb game jokes' box.

Scrolling through my feed list, I'm shocked at how few video game comics there are in it. And what I do have, I think Gamercat, Manly Guys, and Awkward Zombie are the only ones that still post regularly.
