I think 'stuck in a timeloop' counts as a special ability. Honestly, you're going to have a hard time finding stories where the protagonist has absolutely no advantages, because if they didn't, then some random extra could duplicate their feats and do the job better than them. About the closest you're going to come is a story where the protagonist has above-average will power and is willing to go through some extremely strenuous training that anyone is theoretically capable of doing, but most would consider too painful to attempt.

You have plenty of stories in every part of the world about plain old boring people who happen to have slightly less ordinary experiences. Sure, anyone else could have had those experiences, but then that someone-else would have been the protagonist instead. A character is protagonist because they play a part in a story.

Unrelated, I've almost finished reading part 1 of Honzuki now. It's a slow process, about an hour and a half per chapter, but very enjoyable. I'm repeatedly surprised by how much of a nerd Urano is/was, especially with her commentary during her baptismal ceremony.
And to think it's only about 1/10th of the story published so far...

People don't seem all that excited about drama when it comes to web novels. Not sure why exactly, but maybe it's difficult to write a longrunning drama story, and if they're short nobody has time to take notice. On top of that it's just hard to find translators for things, more so when they're not popular to begin with.

The closest Japanese web novel I can think of is Nikubenki, which is probably a human drama at heart, but it's also highly pornographic. Then again, almost all the dramas set in the real world seem to be posted on the adult site.

You're probably better off looking for light novel translations instead, since the genres are a bit more varied there. Stuff like Golden Time, Toradora, or Oregairu?

I like Sugaru Miaki's stuff, though it can be a little depressing: http://www.novelupdates.com/nauthor/sugaru-miaki/

All of his stories (or at least the translated ones) are romance/dramas, sometimes with some supernatural plot elements.

edit: I'm not sure how much they really count as web novels. I think they were originally posted on 2chan and then published as light novels, so they aren't from Narou (or similar sites) like most of the other stuff people are mentioning.

This entire genre seems to vaguely fit those two requirements. The 'reincarnated-as-the-villain-girl' main characters generally don't have super powers and are usually 'good people'. Eliza is in the same genre with a slightly darker / more serious take but I think the main character is still 'good' - Destruction Flag Otome is on the other end of that spectrum in the same genre but with hilarious comedy instead of depressing whatever. otoh the main character in those stories is sort of more powerful than most other characters because of their political status so I don't even know if it counts.

Man it really says something that I have to like strain and struggle to think of something where the main character doesn't have some OP bullshit superpower. All that really comes to mind are the ones where the lead character is some masterful political manipulator instead of a guy who can punch really hard or whatever (like Realist Hero would count maybe?) or just outright comedies.

Also there are a few where the main character is just some average guy who migrates to fantasy land for whatever reason like this one about a NEET who gets trapped in a fantasy world and only his handsome and powerful dog can protect him(the dog starts leveling up and stuff while he doesn't because he's a worthless NEET) I dropped it really early because the chat log format in some chapters was really annoying so I dunno if it's actually any good.

Or this one about a guy who wins the lottery and also finds a magic portal to fantasy land which he uses to mess around with the medieval peasants who live on the other side(read: "Help" them).

Or this one about some guy who meets a hot girl from a fantasy world and she wants him to come marry her for reasons and blah blah blah... this one is actually a bit better than the one sentance blurb does it credit. All the early drama sort of centers around his queen/wife not wanting to lose any power in her patriarchal fantasy world so to do that she marries a complete political outsider (the MC) who it's ok for her to marry for *reasons*. Then it's just him sort of bumbling around trying not to screw things up for her too badly. A tiny bit more mature take on the girl-falls-out-of-the-sky sort of genre.

There are quite a few out there, Narou has categories for drama, non-fantasy romance, etc. I think the problem is that Because they're less popular they don't attract translators as much.

Argue posted:

In Honzuki, the main character doesn't even know they have powers for a while, because it manifests as an illness. I'm not far enough to say if her powers are unique among the people of that world but nearly a hundred chapters in all we really know about her powers is "she has mana." She's successful because she's basically a walking encyclopedia, and applies her earth knowledge to stuff.

Whether or not she's a nice person might be arguable, but she's not psychotic (although in the early chapters she had a yandere vibe that she eventually seems to ditch). She certainly tries to be considerate of others, at least, much to her own inconvenience.

To some extent, it's still a power fantasy though the power of money :getin:

In the Honzuki world Nobles are basically Harry Potter wizards and Peasants aren't born with magic except in rare cases, of which the protagonist is one. So Maine may be special among the peasants, but uh, the "Ascendance" in "Ascendance of a bookworm" comes from 下剋上, which is specifically a word for a person of lower class rising through the social ranks and reversing the relationship of servant and master. It's in the title that she's not gonna stay a peasant forever.

Also, in the later parts (Not really spoilers, but just in case)Maine does become pretty overpowered in her own ways, but only in that she has a ton of mana and a unique perspective on the world. And even then it's not like other OP protagonists. She still can't really fight or anything. And despite that, the only thing she really has that other characters couldn't possibly get is knowledge of earth, and she doesn't use it all that much later as she does in part 1. Part 1 is kind of different from the rest of the series.

ISSTH is not at its best right now but I'm starting to really like this Jin Yunshan guy:
“You can try to hide it,” he thought, “but my Flame Eye can see your greedy nature. Hmph! I’ve already given you a bracelet of holding, so if you look at me the wrong way again, then I’ll remind you about that fact to make sure things don’t go too far. And if you really get out of hand… well, I’ve prepared five more bracelets of holding. Don’t think I won’t be able to handle you this time!” Snorted coldly inside, Jin Yunshan stuck his jaw out, looking as proud and lofty as ever.
and in the next chapter
Soon, the coldness around them intensified, and cracking sounds could be heard as the ground began to ice over. Endless numbers of ghosts began to swirl around Meng Hao, forming a vortex. Everyone was shocked, especially Jin Yunshan, who shivered and pulled out a bracelet of holding.

Yeah this whole sequence just feels forced and boring. Jin Yunshan understanding Meng Hao's greed has been the only entertaining part. I really thought we were going to end with the God, Devil, and Immortal realms fighting and that would be the end of it essentially. Now we have the Vast Expanse and the Vast Expanse Society which exists outside of the Vast Expanse and All-Heaven. Very little of this was ever hinted at so I feel like it is just the author trying to end the story tying together his other web novels and it has made me far less interested.

Er Gen absolutely needed to switch the main viewpoint character of these last chapters in ISSTH to Yan'er with only occasional bits from Meng Hao/Fang Mu.
