Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

I see absolutely nothing bad happening from this. The Birthright equivalent worked out perfectly fine, didn't it?

...Kaze, why are you wincing

Yes, it would seem our path is blocked by thousands of Hoshidan soldiers. If they engage us, we don't stand a chance.
Dammit! This is bad...
Ryoma must have ordered them to intercept us as soon as he returned. A logical course of action since he knew where we'd be coming from.

Hey, for once there's consequence to a really stupid event.

I suppose we'll have to backtrack and find another way into the capital.
Not necessarily. There's another path just ahead we could potentially use.
I get the feeling there's a catch.

There would be no danger of running into their troops. However...
That mountain is home to kitsune, a race of people who can transform into foxes. If they find us, there's no guarantee we'll make it back down the mountain alive.
Hmm...

Effie clutches her Beast Killer closely.

What will you have us do? I know it's tempting to avoid such a risky path... But the more time that passes, the more time the Hoshidans will have to prepare.
*sigh*
You're right, Azura. We'll go through the mountain. We need to end this war quickly so we can expose the truth about Father.
Sadly, I agree. Come, I'll show you the way.

Right. The whole "We will expose the truth about murder dad by murdering Hoshido!"

*Time passes*

I'm not sure. Very few people have found their village and made it back in one piece. For all we know, we may have already passed it. Pray that's the case. For now, all we can do is remain on guard.
Perhaps we should pick up the pace...
Corrine...
Don't be frightened, Elise. Hold my hand if you need to, OK?
Um, it's not that...
Look over there.
Hm?

*A fox approaches them*

Is that what I think it is?!
A kitsune! Gods, no...
...
Hey there, travelers! Nice to meet you!
Ah, um... H-hello.
It's been a long time since anyone's come up here for a visit.

How does it know we're from Nohr?
I'm not an "it", human! I have a name. A better name than yours, no doubt. Call me Kaden. I'm the chief of this village.
My apologies, Kaden. That was very rude of me. May I ask how you were able to discern that my friends and I are from Nohr?

Our clothes? What, the lack of pants gave it away?

That's great though. Nohrian humans are fine by me. I tend to wander away from home and lose my way now and then. Nohrian humans always seem to be the ones to help me find my way back. I love Nohrian humans!
Hm...
It's nice to meet you, Kaden. I'm happy to see kitsune are friendlier than expected. We've heard all kinds of crazy rumors about people losing their lives to your kind... But it seems all that is just one big misunderstanding.
No, I'm afraid that's not so.
Azura! Why would you say that?
Take a look around.

Oh come on, how did you not see that?

Grrrr! Rrrowl!!
Kitsune! They must have surrounded us while we were distracted!
Keehee, not bad, eh? It really was nice to meet you. I wish we could have met elsewhere. I really loathe violence, but since you stepped into our territory...

Kaden, I'm starting to be glad that you were abandoned last game.

What?! But you just said you like Nohrian people...
Oh, I do! You smell so nice and are expert fur brushers! Honestly, all the humans I've met in the outside world have been nothing but kind.
But the humans who come directly into our village never are.

That's why we have to kill anyone who comes here, to protect our own.
But we're not like that at all! We just want to pass through peacefully.
Hmmm... I'd really like to trust you. You have an honest face for a human. But as village chief, it's my job to protect everyone, I can't risk it. I love my people too much... Even though I hate fighting, for them I will. I'm really sorry about all this.

Effie will skewer you on her stick like shish kabob.

That makes absolutely no sense!
If we meet in the afterlife, I'll make this up to you. Maybe we can even be friends!
But for now... This is good-bye.

It's a simple map. Just open field with grass terrain sprinkled in. But the Kitsune have an infuriating gimmick where they are literally untargetable until the end of your turn, harking back to effectively enemy turn reinforcements from Awakening and other games that do that.

Untargetable.

You can still see where they are, so you know where they're going to attack you from, you just can't attack them first.
Although, hmm. What happens if you use a Ballistician's cannon to hit near them?

My A+ Effie/Mozu duo absolutely destroyed this map. Since there are so many forests it's easy to have Effie pair up with Mozu and have Mozu counterkill everything in a whirlwind of death while constantly healing from the forest tiles from her awesome Pskill. This map is really fun.

This map has a simple premise but might be one of the most annoying maps in the game. Percy is highly useful for this map since many of the foxes have a ton of skill, so his crit suppression aura can save you from another reset.

After beating this map I vowed that if I ever got Birthright or Revelations I would throw Kaden on the bench and never let him leave.

Also, if memory serves half of these bastards have pass. So they run up to you, go untargetable and then race through your formation to hit your backline.

And the untargetable turn is split amongst groups so its really hard to dodge that.

Well well, mister fancy-pants, I hope you're wearing your matching sweater today, or you'll be cut down like the ugly tree you are.
The gimmick would be bearable if the switchover between targetable and not happened at the end of the enemy phase. Then you could at least see which enemies can attack you on their turn and plan accordingly.

So of course Intsys decided it would be a great idea to have the switch happen at the end of the player phase instead, making it completely impossible to know what's going to happen :shepicide:

I hate this map so much. The gimmick is bad and unfun enough, but the foxes' high crit rate means I agonized over a lot of my decisions because there were many situations like "ok i need to double this guy but there's a 12% chance i'm dying to the counterattack". And sometimes, that actually happens and I had to reset.

Oh and some of them also have Pass.

I dunno, I don't really feel like Kaden's being a dick for trying to protect his home from intruders. It's a group of armed strangers, one of whom just referred to him as "it," like he's some kind of unintelligent monster and not a person. Even if he escorts them back out the way the came, or helps them make it through to Hoshido, he has no guarantee that they're not just going to come back with a larger group of soldiers later on and slaughter everyone when they're not outnumbered. Better safe than sorry.

That said, given what people have said about this map's mechanics, it sounds like the combat scenario designer was more than enough of a dick to make up for it.

Yeah this map is poo poo. Even ignoring the gimmick, everything has high avoid and is often displaying a single digit crit chance. Generally I think CQ has great map design, but this, and the next few, suck.

On the plus side, everything is weak to the Beastkiller. A high def Lance user with no Beast weakness, like General Effie/Benny or Wyvern Lord Camilla/Beruka/Xander if you can spare two Heart Seals dominates here.

As for Percy, IMO he's the best kid. His father has a fast support with probably his best mother and they make both a good and natural team, so you're likely to unlock him at his strongest. Wyvern Rider is a great base class, and HP+5/Def+2 are both good skills to pass down, so there's no need to wait for high level skills for the parents. Effie as a mother helps his poor base Str, and HP+5 helps his poor base HP, letting his good growths get to work. His chapter is useful for free gold/xp, whichever you need more.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

I think I'm resigned to Niles never promoting and giving me my second healer. Also, Leo is out on the map he would be super useful in.

So this is one of the most annoying maps in Fates. Enemies sporadically switch off and on what's basically invisibility. You can't target them, but they turn it off at the end of your turn.

This is not a problem except that almost every unit has Pass, so walling them off isn't an option to protect your not-Effie units.

Laslow will be important for this mission because of the Hunter's Knife to deal effective damage. As a ranged unit, he can set himself up in the middle of a pack so multiple characters can get a bonus attack from him.

Beruka gets to lvl 19 for +HP/SPD/LCK/DEF.

Truth be told, I would just have Effie and Corrine paired-up as the only deployed units in this game and solo the entire map because it's really that annoying.

As if the illusion gimmick wasn't enough, there are Nine-Tails among the group which are super evasive units and some carry Life And Death which is how they're scratching Effie. And a large portion of this map is mountain and woods, adding even more evasion.

Reminder that EFfie is one of the most accurate attackers on my party and she's getting a 55%.

The easiest way to deal with this swarm problem is to form a wall around Elise or Camilla with my sturdiest non-Xander units and abuse their PSkill.

50 damage is drat impressive even if it's partly factored by Life and Death.

Laslow starts off the party after that big counterfest with a +SPD/DEF level.

Oof, not so great level but he's already doing good on magic and speed so he can take a loss once in a while.

The reason why I said Leo would've been good here is because he has Heartseeker which would've massively helped with reducing all these annoying foxes by 20 avoid.

See in point, Elise being able to have near 100% despite a paltry 10 skill.

Camilla connected with a random hit for a +MAG/SKL/LCK/RES level, and 5k for her troubles.

You will barely see any Charlotte in this mission because she's getting like 45% hit rate as her highs. I should've taken off Gamble.

One way to deal with with these annoying foxes is to get them off the advantageous terrain, so Beruka, Camilla, and Percy will use Lunge a lot to get them onto plain ground and reduce their dodge.

Another Camilla Formation to severely weaken the group in a safe fashion.

These big numbers make me happy.

Arthur finishes off a Lunged fox thanks to Camilla, while Laslow nets himself a great level off an assist. 22 speed now for a ninja!

Percy whacks the final fox in the area for a disappointing level considering how many 60+ growths he has. He gets a Talisman from the corpse.

Many turns later, Formation Elise is used to bait out the final wave, with Corrine gaining both an excellent level and the important Dragonic Hex ability. She'll be instrumental in further reducing the evasion of these foxes.

Annoyance rears its head in the most annoying way possible. I know I'm saying that a lot for this update, but it is really frustrating that half the units are targetable and half aren't here. So I have to stay in formation for another turn.

The numbers just keep getting bigger, although twice now she's missed defense.

Really? All but one fox is targetable, so I have to yet again stay in formation.

Someone on the design team really loves same-turn reinforcements.

Finally. Time to move on to Kaden.

Nothing wacky on his skillset other than maybe Armored Blow. That 30 speed could be a killer on the wrong unit.

I took great joy in Corrine Dragonic Hexing him.

Laslow gets +HP/SPD which is fine. Up to 23 speed now. Also picks up a Beaststone+, which I can't even sell :argh:

Beruka finishes off the last enemy for...a level. Man.

Corrine?
I know we had no choice but to fight them. Still...it felt wrong. We came here to avoid being massacred, but in the end...we're the ones who...

Please do not pity the foxes that literally planned an ambush with their entire village.

Though inherently peaceful, they were serious about killing us. We would have all died if we had held back.
I know... Still, my heart breaks for them.
I know what you're thinking... That they'd still be alive if we hadn't come this way.
But the war would have been prolonged, and others elsewhere would have died. Surely you see that?
This war doesn't concern them. They were only guarding against potential poachers.
They died because we brought them into this mess. Because I did.

If someone tripped over a rock, Corrine would blame herself for her birth causing that rock to be misplaced one inch farther than it should.

Well, she's already sacrificed one kingdom...

Huh?
In this world, there is no clean-cut path. You can't save everyone. Each path represents a choice to protect one thing while sacrificing another. All you can do is try to protect those you love as best you can.

The times where the dialogue is clearly talking about the branching paths in a direct fashion is really hilarious. Every single time.

I know it's hard...but we must follow our hearts and let the tide of fate fall as it will.
So forgive yourself, Corrine. For all the tragedy that has come and is yet to come. Forgive yourself.
Forgive myself...?
Do you remember what you were told about your blade in Hoshido?

Ah yes, the Grim Yato will bring hope.

That sword chose you, and you chose this path. Don't you see? No matter how hard it is, or how sad, this path must be the right one. I truly believe that. I hope one day you will too.
Azura...
Thank you.
A smile? How refreshing. That's the Corrine I'm used to seeing.

What? She smiled like right before the battle.

"Stop being a dumb martyr, idiot"

"Wow, you really showed me! *Smiles*"

It was for the team. After all, I'm supposed to be the melancholy one!
Now let's get down this mountain before the Hoshidans catch wind of our location. *leaves*

So on the Lunatic version of this map, there are some miserable motherfuckers with Pass, Life and Death, and Beaststones+, meaning they have 30+ SPD, can move through your tanky units to hit the squishy ones, and deal an extra 10 damage per attack to them. It's pretty loving frustrating, especially since every kitsune has beast killer and drat near every Nohr unit is on horseback.

You weren't sleeping, were you?
Hahaha. That's cute, if not ridiculous. No, I was merely testing a new charm.
Oooh, what kind? Is it a snore charm? A snoring-really-loudly charm?
...Cute. Actually, it's a charm entrusted to me by the demons of the night. It allows me to tap into the netherworld at will to aid me in my eternal crusade for...
Tap into the nether who? What is that?
It is what the fragile labyrinth of the human mind craves most of all... a taste of the knowingness of death and the power of the silent darkness as it—
You have a fragile labyrinth for a mind?
Yes, and it remains hidden behind a beautiful veil of darkness until I...
Wait, so you were lifting a veil of darkness? What does THAT mean?
... Well, it...
Look, I was asleep, OK?

WHAAA? Lady Elise?! What brings you here...again?
I don't see anyone else here.
Th-that is correct. I am here alone.
Heehee! You're just like my father. He always talks to himself too.
Oh, but what's wrong? Are you OK? Why were you holding your arm like that?
It's n-nothing to trouble yourself over. The demons of the night branded my arm from within, but 'tis only a phantom pain.
The demons of the night...branded you from within? That's what happened?
Um, well, what I mean is...
Look, I was just pretending I was in pain. It's complicated.
Ah, that makes more sense! Good to know.
So wait—were you also pretending to talk to someone?
No, I was pretending to feel the presence of the darkness in this room. Happy now?!
Yes, very! I feel like I finally understand where you're coming from, heehee.
Odin, can you please say cool things like that more often?
Really?! You, um...REALLY?!
I mean, I have no idea what you're saying most of the time when you talk like that.
But if you throw in some normal talk every once in a while, I can play along too!
Please, bite your tongue, milady. I cannot simply change my essence.
I would lose my grasp over the darkness! I...simply wouldn't be myself any longer.
Well, that's fine too. Just talk to me a bunch, and eventually I'll understand!
Talk to you...a bunch?
Yeah! You and I should talk all the time starting RIGHT NOW!
Soon I'll know all about the demons of the labyrinth and their veil of stuff and stuff.
This is going to be great!

You are exactly right. But...are you sure you're OK, Lady Elise?
Huh? What do you mean? Am I doing it wrong?
No, it's just...if you speak with the tongue of darkness, won't you be shunned?
Oh, don't worry about it. I only speak with the dark tongue or whatever around you!
Besides, even if I said these things to other people, I think they'd just be confused.
I suppose that's true.
But who cares about what other people think. Let's keep Odin-talking!
I just love all the wonderful stories you tell. They're so whimsical and cool!
Aren't they, though?! Aren't they so heroic and inspiring? Elise, you're just...you're great! This is why you're the beloved princess of Nohr.
Teehee, thanks! Enough of that, though. Weren't you going to tell me about your 13th Demon Blade?

There are those who believe I am exposing you to some kind of evil sorcery.
WHAT?! That's just silly! We're just having fun chatting. There's nothing evil about it! If people are so worried about what you're saying, they should join our conversations!
True, but even if they did, I doubt they would understand what was being said.
How can we keep spending time together without people getting the wrong idea?
We could always get married, haha. Then I bet people would stop fussing over us.
Get...married?
Oh, I just meant if we were married, they would expect us to always be together. *ahem* But anyway, let me tell you a little bit about this new Demon Sword I found...
Hey, Odin...you know, marriage might not be such a bad idea. It might just work.
Wh-wh-what did you just say?!
I said, getting married isn't such a bad idea!
Whoa, wait. Wait! Just WAIT one minute! I was joking when I said that! You do understand what marriage is, don't you, Lady Elise?
DUH. Did you really just ask me that? Don't you dare treat me like a child!
I-I'm very sorry. I just meant...marrying me just so we can keep chatting...
But...that's not the only reason. Since we've been spending time together, I've been thinking about all kinds of things.
Things I've never thought about before! Like...how much I enjoy being with you. It's not because I like your stories or that we get along so well, either. It's because...
It's because I have feelings for you! Strong ones! Love-type ones!
Whaaaa?! D-do you really mean that?!
...I do. Is that, um, OK?
W-well, of course! I mean, I think you're extremely beautiful and special. And truth be told, I have the same kind of feelings for you too. It's just...
Just what?
Everyone will oppose. EVERYONE. They all know...that I'm not worthy of you.
*pffft* Is that all? Who cares? All that matters is how we feel about each other!
Lady Elise, are you sure about that? If you're really prepared for the backlash, I have something I'd like to say to you...
I'm prepared for anything, so long as I have you. Go ahead and say it.
Lady Elise...all I want in this world is to stay by your side. Please marry me. Tomorrow we'll go to pick out a pretty ring for that pretty little hand of yours.
Oh, Odin! Of course I'll marry you! I'm so happy...
I had no idea things would turn out this way between us. I'm elated.
Together we shall find a way to forever banish the dark entities of the night! And I promise somehow I'll find a way to show everyone I am worthy of you.
Yaaay! Now we can talk about the darkness all we want, heehee!
