Alternate hypothesis: Steve is just an avatar of NK's self loathing. He doesn't want to be the Nightmare Knight. He wants to be just some guy named Steve who has friends and isn't anything like the Nightmare Knight. That's why Steve has such a completely opposite body type. It's because NK hates himself.

It just occurred to me that the Extremely Specific And Pretty Much Completely Worthless Capsule Spell Machine dispensed two bathtub drain spells in a row. (Nautilus gets a different spell from it next page but still) Perhaps someone knew Steve was down there and loaded the machine with the bathtub drain spell?
