It's actually not uncommon for mining equipment to move like this. It removes the need for an expensive axle and differential arrangement to take the massive weight, and it never bogs in the soft ground of the mine. My local machinery club has a small dragline with a similar but different movement method.

Used to drag up brown coal for one of our power stations, now an attraction. Every time though, someone forgets to charge the air starter tanks 20 minutes before showtime and we sit there waiting for it to charge so we can start the diesels.
