Desert Raiders was ok. It had a neat twist and some good "oh god-emperor no, even more Tyranids" action.

And it's the only one of the three I remember anything about.

Well as mentioned before mostly because of the ending.

All completely forgettable. Skip.

You can add Deathworld by Steve Lyons to the forgettable list. Probably also Gunheads by Steve Parker. Got it but never read too far into it, which is a shame since I love tanks but it couldn't really hold my attention.
Never read Ice Guard so I can't say anything about it.

What is the one that is essentially Space-Zulu, with a bit of space-Indian Mutiny thrown in for good measure?

Was that the one with the Cadians trying to get Yarrick back?

I'd also recommend Valdeor. It's the only straight-up good novel I've read about the Eldar, and it's got a lot of interesting perspectives re: them and the tyranid. It's also a good overall "intro to what the faction is about" book, kinda like what Helsreach is to the space marines.

I don't understand why they used the Cadians and not the steel legion. It makes zero sense.

There's a short story featuring Yarrick's capture and escape. It's okay.

Most of the IG standalone regiment books seemed pretty :mediocre: but that might just be me.

Because they had boxes of Cadians sitting on the shelves.

Well Then, What Shall We Start With?
I remember all the Imperial Guard regiment novels blurring together except the Tallarn one because of the twist ending and 15 Hours because it was a bit better than most.

Wasn't one of them about some Guardsmen using a Hades Drill tank to break through a massive wall of Chaos Ice that was sealing somewhere off? You could tell the ice was chaotic because it refroze too quickly I think.

That sounds like a Ciaphas Cain novel, since that's pretty much what the Valhallan Ice Warriors do on a daily basis.

Are there really any non Ghost/Cain Guard books that became decent series or are they mostly one shots?

Yep. The best parts were the commissars having to deal with mopey clone men who never disobeyed orders and chucking your weapon to the dude next you before you derezzed from a gauss gun shot.

If you haven't read the book, do so.

Anyone remember the short story "Angels" in Let The Galaxy Burn? Anyone have any idea what the hell it is that actually attacks the village? I think its either genestealers or daemons but there are weird parts that make me uncertain.

Just checked, of the two it looks like genestealers, they certainly bleed. It could just be a generic threat that the author didn't bother to specify to deeply however.

Rereading through Age of Darkness again and the only things of value is ADB's story 'Savage Weapons' and Dan Abnett's 'Little Horus'. Really memorable moments and emotional impacts.

The first story 'Rules of Engagement' is just sooooo many words for "Ghoulyman isn't perfect but everyone refuses to believe him and his codex are flawed in anyway lol. "
