Umm, yes? Why wouldn't you be firing 24/7, even if you're moving? Firing your weapons is how you kill the bad robots and win the game, so you want to be doing it on cooldown. As Commoners pointed out, the vast majority of builds are not using all of their available firepower due to heating limitations.

Heat is the major limiting factor to your damage output over time, and Heat Containment has no meaningful impact on that. It doesn't reduce the heat your weapons create, nor does it help dissipate that said heat.

Each mech now has an innate accelration stat that, along with good hit points, might be the most important thing to look for right now.

Slow, pondering assaults really got hosed while the more nimble ones came out well. Atlases got gutted, battlemasters are doing well.

Too soon to tell? You'll still use them on Clan battlemechs because their XLs are so much better, but a lot of beefier IS mechs might want to consider dropping their suicide motors now that the only benefit is top speed and number of in-engine heat sinks. Losing 10-15 kph sucks, but not as much as exploding when a shoulder gets popped.

And yeah, as Cyrano said, it's a sad time to be an Altas. It takes them roughly twenty years to move in and out of cover so post-patch they have only two different modes, exposed and dead.

They're OK. THey got hosed on accel decel but not as bad as the KDK. 18 m/s from what I recall, which is about what the battle masters have.

Ironically enough the only KDK that's worth a drat any more is the 3. The mounts are high enough that it can still peek and poke and trade well. Not quite as well as it used to, but still really damned well.

I'm sure I wont be missed but I've had a couple tries figuring out the new skill tree & each time thought "meh! too much bullshit, I just want to shoot robots" and just cant be arsed with this any more.

I'll keep checking the thread to see if this crap gets patched out but I think I'm finally done with MWO.

Yeah, the KDK-3 is still probably the best 100-ton assault, it just doesn't get to cheat and move like an 85-ton assault anymore.

Yeah, but I think that's more of an issue of ALL the 100 tonners just getting absolutely trashed by the decoupling. The kodiak is just a turret with legs now, but it still has lots of guns.

I've been using the victor 9S with 3ASRM6s and an AC20 and it's pretty brutal. It's like an atlas with more speed and some jump jets.

I was playing with a friend earlier and ironically the Victor is a decent SRM brawler now. Mobile enough to cover-dance like the Atlas used to, and the SRMs all converge really loving quickly now.

I've seen loads of Victors around, earlier today there were 4 in a single solo game. In my last game today one of them jumped up on the platforms sticking out of the center structure on HPG. Got a screenshot but I was using nightvision so I won't bother uploading it.
The cool thing about all this is that I got so much money (160milli) and so many legacy XP points I can buy pretty much any mechs I want and fully skill them out but I've been having too much fun trying out mechs I already own. I went deep into the mobility tree with my MDD-B (6xSRM6) with 36/40 and it's really nice. (30/0/36/15/10/0 on the skilltree).

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I look at the skill tree, think I should probably do this, or that, end up not doing any of it. Then I'll look at another mech and wonder what skills I should go for for that one. I'll take it out for a spin on a test map to see how it performs with the engine decoupling before making any decisions. Stare at the tech trees. End up not picking anything and closing MWO.

Even with the refunds I don't have enough xp/cbills to frivolously experiment and try things out so I feel like I need to get things right on the first or second try. I'll just wait for people to tell me which of the 250+ nodes to click on for my different mechs.

Was dropping with a friend's unit earlier on today and one of them had 35,000 GSP from all the modules he used to own. Made my own 1300 GSP seem paltry.

If you guys are getting intimidated by the skill tree just hammer down all the buttons as quickly as you can while vaguely skipping over stuff. Don't worry about optimization, because you fuckers don't try to play in an optimized fashion anyway.

Just run with a gimmick on your mechs and run it as hard as possible. I've spent probably less than one minute in the skill trees for the mechs I'm outfitting because I just press buttons until I hit 91 points with little regard for what I'm actually taking.

The skill labyrinth is really just about deciding what skill tree a mech of your type would benefit from and filling the entire thing out then just randomly clicking through the other ones, you guys are massively over-thinking it.

You want to know something retarded? The armor tree scales inversely with weight. Each node for a 100 ton mech is worth 1%, for example, and on a 50 ton mech each is worth 2%. This is why we're seeing such nutso figures for lighter mechs with heavy armor quirks.

Yeah, but having an atlas with 25% extra armor would be retarded too, so it's pretty much a good change. The mechs that get the most benefit out of the armor tree are absolute loving dumpster fires. The urbanmech, vindicator, cataphract, and dragon need all the help they can get. The victor is probably the only one of those that isn't a complete turd now that it actually has missile tubes that it can fire all at once, and it moves relatively faster than other assaults.

I'm wondering why they didn't just make it a flat bonus scaled by tonnage. I mean, it helps out a small set of shitter mechs, as you mentioned, but it's nigh useless for everything else. Having a whole tree dedicated to such a small niche seems like a not great idea.

I played my first post-patch match with a Urbie R60 rocking a standard engine. I was the last one to die with >700 damage and I never even got close to overheating. Super fun.

Also, the R60L can now carry 27 AC/20 rounds (not 28 due to some odd rounding, I guess?). Oh boy does that make a difference.

It's stupid and bloated, but not half as complicated as it looks. Like for the Firepower tree in that picture, there are only four types of generic node: Cooldown, Heat Gen, Range, and Velocity. You just take as many of them as you have points to spare after getting the weapon specific stuff.

The biggest problems with it are that it's intimidating to look at, and tedious to fill out.

But those are both huge problems. New players will get scared off at a glance and vets will be annoyed that they have to arduously map out all 91 nodes on their 100+ mechs. You can't even save templates! Any changes you want to make have to be done node by node, every time.

Colouring all nodes by type, like they've already done for the weapon-specific nodes, would make them a hell of a lot more readable.

e: This version of the online skill planner already does it. Note how you can see the typical 'laserboat' arrow-shaped pick at a glance (all the green range nodes).

If you max out the surviveability tree on the Dragon you can have around 180 total HP on your ct. That gives you just enough health to survive the 3 alphas the average clan heavy can put out before it overheats.

Kinda pissed at how my Atloxen got wrecked, but...

Awesomes are pretty awesome, and I guess I must be the odd one out, I actually enjoy filling out all these skill trees.

It's going to take awhile until all my mechs are 'usable' again but most of them were borderline in the first place. I use the 'favourite' filter to keep the mechs I have skilled from the untouched ones.

Things are definitely shaken up, and I think they got the number of skill points to available skills ratio pretty solid. ie. you usually end up with something solid, but wanting just a little more.

Game still dead/dying, sadly. Still, feels good to get the ol' laser vom back on.

It looks like the skill tree gives you lots of customization options but it does not because many of the skills are required. For example, for lasermechs you will always want to unlock the 4 duration quirks, for SRM mechs you will always want to unlock the crit and spread nodes et.c. For most mechs you also want the speed tweaks, you need the radar dep. ones and so on. Most builds look almost identical, the only tree differing is the firepower tree depending on the build of the mech.

What it does is give bad people more chances to gently caress up their mechs, previously they could only hurt themselves using bad mech builds, now they can also hurt themselves but doing bad skill builds. There are optimal builds, depending on what kind of mech you pilot, and most of them look identical, once you find this optimal build it's just a matter of spending at max 5 minutes clicking to skill out your mech.

It would be very sad if people stop playing this game because of this skill tree, it is not a good tree but spend a few minutes and you will have an edge over most other people.
Personally my favorite thing about the skilltree is the removal of modules, I can now switch mechs constantly without being bothered about not being 100% effective due to no modules/having to spend time moving modules around.

With the new ammo nodes you get to save a ton or two on ammo, and possibly on the engine, so you can switch to 4X LRM10 for the better cooldown and spread.

Also there's a LOT more people running around without radar deprivation now.

It sucks that you can't see what other peoples skilltree looks like. I don't mean PGI should make it possible, that would just be weird, but it would be interesting to see how the generic PUGs skill their mechs. I have a feeling they go super hard into the auxiliary tree judging from all the airstrikes, artillery and UAVs I see in the solo queue now. Jumpjets also seem very popular. The skilltree just gives PUGs another rope to hang themselves with, fine by me.
