Playing is a start but depending on what you do you'll want to check forums/wiki/gamefiles to learn how some things work. Things like idea group based events and poo poo aren't communicated by the UI at all. Even after all this time I don't understand some systems fully:

Johan was staring at the ground during most of his presentation on the history of Europa Universalis' development, but that was okay since it was still an interesting presentation with lots of neat info and stories. Just, you know, no eye contact.
