I think the artists' daily gigs are drawing perv porn. That said, I... actually like the art style, as long the rest of the illustrations that they don't show aren't furry dickgirls. There are some huge-boobed cheesecake, but most of it is just colorful, with a lot of personality.

Ghost in the Shell is pretty good despite Masamune Shirow being pretty much a porn guy at this point. Katsuya Terada has also done his share of porn, and for that matter, so have Clyde Caldwell and some other "classic" fantasy artists.

It's supposed to be post-scarcity post-human space opera. From what information there seems to be available it doesn't seem to be significantly pornier than good ol' Sex Moves RPG. I dunno, though. Someone buy it and tell us!

It's not particularly sexy other than some cheesecake illustrations. There're a couple of illustrations that show nipples but they aren't as much sexy as kinda hosed up. There aren't even sex moves.

Anyways, playable characters include all kinds of weirdos, like a spaceship (with an avatar), a walking WMD, some hapless person yanked out of their element (possibly from the 21th century) who has a thing for getting lucky and inspiring their comrades, an uplifted animal (the illustration for this is a monkey with a gun arm strapped to their back), a hivemind, as well as more normal examples like techies, old soldiers, and historicans.

There're a lot of playbooks, but that's because each one consists of 3 moves, maybe 4. There isn't really an advancement system, though at the end of every session you get a chance to shuffle things around and even change playbook if it makes sense, but you don't really gain points except in connections. Besides, characters're already extremely capable.

The real problem is that the numbers're dodgy, honestly. You can do a setup move to give yourself a rather large bonus in some situations, and there're at least a couple of moves that give you a bonus if you keep doing that move. For example, the Futsie's Atrocity move gives you +1 forward on a 7-9, +3 forward on a 10-12, and +6 forward on a 13+, as long as you keep rampaging. (This move's geared more toward clearing out masses of weaker opponents, but you get the same forward to an assault move which is the normal 'do violence' move and can take out the strongest opponents. So if there're enough weak opponents to rampage at, you can just snowball until you can take out that otherwise unbeatable dude.)

Speaking of opponents, there's such a thing as a Grand opponent which takes a 13+ to beat. They're intended to be especially daunting, but I somehow feel like there's a better approach to this.

In short: A+ flavor, but I dunno about some of the mechanics.

So far it's weird but interesting and not the worst PBTA I've read by a long margin.

I might as well mention that with that Atrocity move I just talked about, you'll probably run out of mooks to kill anyways. It's not like it's a completely spammable move. And mechanically, this game is interesting enough, with a points economy where your points move around from different pool to pool. (For example, you tend to spend Fx to activate special moves which either goes into Hx which you can spend to Inspire someone and turn back into Fx. Or those points go into a pool tailored to each such move, which you can spend on another move.)

EDIT: Nevermind, the MC moves're confusingly under the Snowballing section. They're pretty generic but workable. The game does need to be reworked to remove the weak/strong/grand mechanism, though. That very mechanism's what's leading to the massive numbers inflation I'm seeing in some of the player moves.

I'm having a read of The Veil, a transhuman cyberpunk rpg, and it's a really interesting work. Despite being heavy into the genre, it's a mostly generic set of moves with emotions as stats not tied to specific ones. So you might be really good at doing stuff while Scared. There's a track for each set, and as that goes further up, that number increases and the others get lower, and when you reach enough you roll a special Alleviate move. It's a very different approach to what I expected from a game that has playbooks like the last remaining CyberMonk or Enlightenment-seeking Crusader. Anyone else had a look at this?

They look a lot better. Especially the Joined, it was kind of a mess before but now that it's based off another PC it works a lot better.

No Boots on the Ground,
Puny Mortals!

Basically a straight improvement across the board, in my opinion.
The Reformed's moves are all useful now. I'd probably boost Dark Past to let you pick two options, because it's a pretty serious narrative hose job as it stands now.
The Innocent now has real moves that don't rely on their Edgy Future Self showing up, while still making them cast a long shadow over your actions.
Newborn is way less janky, with the janky parts demoted to separate moves (even if getting the damaged condition feels a little weak for a whole move) and the creator's advice moved absorbed into the lesson's feature.
The Star was always the best of the original ones, so it doesn't need much help. The changes to Time For The Show makes it way less of a headache as the MC, in my opinion. The gossip mags is a pretty good move for them too.
The Joined is by far the most different, and it feels... underwhelming, I guess? You get to borrow someone else's playbook features but none of the moves really catch my interest, though. It's vastly more coherent than the first version, though. I just don't find the bonds and distinctions that interesting.

You're in luck, +1 Forward just released their episode today where they interview the creator and do a short AP. I'm planning to give it a listen on the way home today, but I'm liking the use of emotions, since a lot of transhuman stories focus on emotions and feeling while still being all chrome and wire.

honestly after thinking about it I'm not so into it, most of it aside from the emotions as stats is really derivative. Some of the playbooks are straight ripoffs of other games, the core moves are basically just Apocalypse World core but with Strings (aside from Duel and Divert, which I think is from Masks, but I'm not sure) and it's tonally weird enough that keeping players on the same page about the fiction is going to be tricky.

My only other PBtA experience is AW1e, Monsterhearts 1e and Dungeon World. Never actually played any of them (aside from trying to MC an AW PbP and failing) so while I agree there's some rough spots with The Veil, it still gets me excited. I figure keeping the group size down and therefore limiting how many playbooks are in play would help with the tone though.

Though the use of "credits" bothers me more than it should. If I ever run it, one of the first session things is "what is the currency called?"

I finally got around to actually laying out that game Muscle Wizards I wrote. A few other things changed after some playtests, including:
  • Reduced the die size from d12s to d10s after my previous comment about the range feeling too large, and tinkered with bonuses to reflect that
  • Added another roll outcome tier (9- is 'bad', 10-12 is 'middling bad', 13-15 is 'middling good', 16+ is 'good'), which meant retooling or rewriting the majority of the moves
  • Added a move for helping other players out
  • Added threat moves (Rulers, Brutes, Killers, Places) to the GM section
  • The players each now pick a rumor about the Muscle Wizards that's true in order to bootstrap the one-shot more readily
  • Small changes to the list of spellcasting, mixed magical martial arts, and description lists

As per usual, I'd love any feedback, comments, and otherwise.

Ran an excellent game of Spirit of '77 last night. The boys were a shady freelance coroner (Former Badge Specialist) and an unlicensed PI/strongman (Ex-Con Tough Guy) working to solve problems for the LA elite.

They got called in to solve/cover up a string of murders on the set of their patron's film. As the bodies were all crushed to death, they chased an angle on a gorilla that was involved in another shoot on the lot, and while that didn't pan out they broke up an exotic animal fighting ring that was being run by their ongoing adversaries, a biker gang. Afterwards, they went undercover to set themselves up as bait and had to fight off a giant animatronic monster that the SFX head had been using to settle grievances on set. The coroner chased the SFX guy who ran off with the controls while the tough guy fought the robot, and was saved by the grateful gorilla just before the coroner got the console and turned off the robot.

So77 is really becoming one of my favourite PbtA games.

I haven't been able to give it a full readthrough yet, but my first thought was that I like that every family except for the New Flesh gets to define aspects of the fall with their statline, while the New Flesh's options are more based on their own response, which shapes the setting less.

Hmm, that's fair. Maybe it could be about whether the fall was something natural to this world, something alien to it, or something turned strange by mankind?
