Thanks to everyone who suggested bands. I agree that classifying them is very hard, and "post-punk revival" captures so many different sounds because "post-punk" itself was very broad.

It's wonderful how amazing your recommended songs were. They all hit the nail on the head.

I'm looking for similar songs to this really small-time band from my hometown. I'd look on Spotify, Last.fm, Pandora, but they're so small they're not on any of those. They're just on Soundcloud.

https://rudywarman.bandcamp.com/album/vol-2 The song is Buttercup. I'm in love with their style and all the other songs, but this song is my favourite. Are there any other bands / artists that have the same style as them? I've contacted the artists asking them if they sell physical copies of their music (instead of the streaming options), but I don't think they do. They're still so small they just busk on busy streets and sell CDs there, but I'm not gonna be home for months. Similar songs from different artists: Hugo - Bread and Butter, Jamie N Commons - Lead Me Home, Welshly Arms - Hold On I'm Coming,

I'm looking for spooky country-western music. I recently saw a country band cover "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and I'm looking for something with that kind of spooky vibe to it, but I'd also be happy with something ghostlier and sad too, à la Danny Schmidt's Ghosts, or This Too Shall Pass. I'm a neophyte to the genre, so even if you think I've probably already heard it, I likely haven't, even the classics. Thanks in advance.

I'm not an expert on this genre, but when I'm in the mood for this sort of sound I usually go for Tom Waits' extensive discography. There's a lot to explore including stuff outside of the Americana box, but just to get you an idea :

I'd try The Handsome Family. A lot of spooky themes and story-driven songs - gothic stories, murder ballads, suicide, depression, ghosts, and other things. Morbid and hopeless, but beautiful:

I'm having a lovely party to celebrate Spring. I used to really like Mr. Scruff's soul/funk oriented mixes he would upload on SoundCloud, but he completely stopped doing that 4 months ago. Almost every mix-based site I used to like has shut down as well, including nyctrust.com

Where can I find nice fun dancy music mixes featuring tons of soul/funk (NOT EDM), preferably by someone that knows more about it/has more vinyl than I ever will?

Also, I love music like this and cannot find any more like it. How do I find more?

"Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Eurythmics has some fun stereo effects that sound cool on cans. The video is, of course, :krad: but it's a mono mix on youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsmaTq-T4zE

Thanks to Steve Albini's engineering, you can hear the room mics picking up non-amplified guitar strumming in the opening of "Wasted Days" by Cloud Nothings. It's harder to make that out on speakers and it gives you the vibe that you're in the room with the band.

Youtube probably does terrible things to it, but Helloween's Chameleon album has wonderfully clear and crisp production and imo just plain sounds great with headphones. Wonderful sense of space to it. Particularly, if you can find the song Longing somewhere that doesn't buthcer the mix, I recommend it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nII5vclnawM

fake edit: I just dug out the original CD and listened to the song on my stereo with headphones, then plugged the headphones in my PC and am now listening to the youtube version, and yyyeeeah this is hella flat and smudged.

actual edit: Or maybe that's just my computer having poo poo sound, I don't know.

Boris is a weird band in that some of their stuff really rocks and some of it is just (imho) boring feedback noise. Definetly start with pink and probably Akuma No uta and go from there.

Also check out Melt Banana if you haven't. Cell-Scape is a good place to start.
