Rule 40.4 Automatic Suspension – Category III Any player who, by his actions, physically demeans an official or physically threatens an official by (but not limited to) throwing a stick or any other piece of equipment or object at or in the general direction of an official, shooting the puck at or in the general direction of an official, spitting at or in the general direction of an official, or who deliberately applies physical force to an official solely for the purpose of getting free of such an official during or immediately following an altercation shall be suspended for not less than three (3) games. perry did the exact thing the rule says you aren't allowed to do. and given what has happened in the past year as it relates to abuse of officials, you would think the league would do the smart thing and come down on him with the mandatory 3 game suspension. but yeah, playoffs, maybe?

That looks pretty cut and dry. But if the minimum suspension is 3 games, I just can't imagine they give it to him in Game 6 of the conference finals.

Just revoke all rules for the playoffs and let players put nails and broken glass on the backside of their gloves so they can really maim each other. Because It's the Cup™

The NHL has always done their bullshit of treating playoff games as more valuable than regular season games so hoping for anything more than a game is a pipedream. And even if they do get something right they just change their mind down the line like they did with the Devils forfeiting picks for the Kovalchuk contract.

One of the most refreshing things about watching world championship games has been the much more reasonable and consistent standard the IIHF calls. I didn't realize how much I hate the put the whistles away poo poo at this point. I don't expect the NHL to apply it's rules in games and certainly don't expect them to do anything about Perry.

# ? May 21, 2017 17:38 |

IIHF refereeing is notoriously bad and the games I watched (mainly the US admittedly) were no different. There were like 3-4 headshots that went completely uncalled and they're absolutely indifferent to interference, even moreso than the NHL.

The reality is that there will always be controversial calls and missed calls, but IIHF refereeing is worlds better than NHL refereeing, which is a downright joke.

I don't agree with that at all. Imo NHL reffing is by far the best out of the four major North American sports, and they generally do a pretty good job. I'd like to see them enforce interference rules more strictly, but that's clearly a mandate they've put in place to try and reduce concussions.

Worst reffing and refs I know are from IIHF.

But like McLellan said when the ref brought his whistle up to call the obvious too much mans and then didn't, I can forgive them for not calling what they don't see, but when they see it and don't call it, it's a problem. The thing that's bugged me most about these playoffs is a crosscheck well after the whistle, and then penalizing the victim for responding in any way. like you can go around after the whislte slashing dudes as long as you do it before they slash you, or it's retaliation and it's 2 minutes.

I wasn't really meaning to appreciate the refs' skill at the world championship; I agree that the refs in the NHL are best. What I ought to have said about the IIHF reffing is that I like the standard of officiating they are using. They might miss poo poo, but they call the rules closer to the book and don't let stupid poo poo go if they see it.

It's difficult to say that a "by the book" standard exists in hockey. The rules allow referees to set their own standards, e.g. Rule 41 (boarding) says "There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees" and the rules for elbowing and charging say a referee "may, at his discretion" assess a penalty "based on the degree of violence". Disagreements are bound to arise over what degree of violence constitutes a penalty.

Why can't people just call interference and pick plays? It's super simple to just not allow defenseman to grab a hold of forwards. And it would cause defenseman to pivot and chase the puck, which they are gonna lose many times, and lead to offensive opportunities. Also, why do kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch

It leads to worse hockey but this is a legit problem with the sport. Not sure what the solution is short of removing contact entirely.

Jordan7hm posted:Because it leads to guys flying into the offensive zone too fast. The pick plays are a safety measure. Haha. No. Not all are dumps. They bounce it off the wall adjacent to the defenseman. This is 100% the refs not wanting to cal everything. But that has historically already happened once (in 2005/2006) they just allowed themselves to be lax again. It's totes a decision, and they could do it. Also, in the "stupid loving idea" department. My idea to fix the league is to call intentional icing when a defenseman is unable to keep the puck in the zone, and then is under pressure by the opposing forwards, so he dumps the puck in and the team clears the zone. If you make the defenseman play the puck, it would lead to mistakes. Get this idea to the gm table. Asap.

Well, Pens are clearly going to win this series, no way back for the Sens. Stick the in them. Much like the Sharks beating the Oilers 7-0 and the Oilers beating the Ducks 7-1 the Pens got this series all locked up. No need to play Game 6.

Not even Cherry's defending that lovely headshot from Wingels I mean, yeah they got blown out, but they got blown out in the fifth game of the ECF in a year they weren't supposed to make the playoffs. I have no idea where I'm going with this so gently caress Cody Ceci and Dion Phaneuf.
