Growing up I never had a Mega CD (Sega CD, whatever) so Sonic CD was always that mythological entity in a series I loved so dearly and therefore just HAD to be the best Sonic ever. It looked so good in the tiny grainy magazine pictures.

I finally played it a few years ago when it came out on Steam. It was ok. The soundtrack (EU/JP) was probably the best thing but the level design and boss fights (and special stage) sucked balls. I'd probably rank it the worst of the classic games.

1. 3&K
2. 2
3. 1
4. CD

I fully doubt that a CD stage in Mania would have the same problems. I doubt they'd go for time travel and even if they did it'd probably just be a set dressing thing for one or two levels more than a required gameplay mechanic in a stage with an exploration focus. It'll probably just be Stardust Speedway but enough time has passed that it's permanently Good Future except there's badniks there and Metal Sonic is the boss.

Sonic CD's final boss is so bad it was the one thing the tax man (correctly) wanted to completely redo but Sega told him no.

The real problem people have is sitting down with this Sonic game they couldn't play as a kid and a couple minutes in realizing it is not, in fact, a Sonic game as their childhood memories tell them.

Once you get around that yeah, it is something of a mess, but it does have a lot of great stuff in its favor.

Sonic CD is one of those really, really polarizing games along with Majora's Mask and every Final Fantasy game ever. I really like the game a lot, but mind you I did grow up with a Sega CD.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best Sonic game hands down, and I don't think you'll find many people who will argue with that. After that is Sonic 2. Sonic CD has some half-baked mechanics and iffy level design, but it makes up for it with great visuals and music. Then I'd put Sonic 1 on the bottom, not because it's bad or anything, but because it's the least interesting and half of the levels are on the slow side.

I like Knuckles' Chaotix too, even though it feels unfinished and it's rubber-band mechanic turns people off. It has the same visual style as Sonic CD, which is gorgeous.

Sonic Chaos and Triple Trouble for the Game Gear are also fine. They're not amazing but they're ok if you played all the above and are still hungry for more. They're certainly not bad. I can't really recommend Sonic 1 & 2 for Game Gear \ Master System, though.

My God. Someone finally said it. Once a year I go back to replay Sonic CD so I can try to understand why its fanboys fellate each other over it. I never make it more than 10 minutes before the lovely levels with decorative sprite bukkake make me turn the game off. It was all the half-baked concepts that eventually got polished in time for Sonic 2.

Sonic Mania seems to be paying Sonic CD a little bit of lip service with how cluttered its levels look but it could have been much worse.

I've I'm reading that correctly, it would start on Green Hill, South Island, then you go back in time a little (e.g. Hill Top) and that ruins the present.
So, when you return, Green Hill becomes Dust Hill, "Ocean Wind Zone" becomes Oil Ocean, and so on.

To fix that poo poo you go back to ancient times ... Chemical Plant, Casino Night, Genocide City.

That pretty much means Sonic's world is some far post-apocalyptic future land (or at least, it was supposed to be, before Sonic Adventure came along to rewrite everything).

Fits in nicely with the OVA scenario, too (the Land of Darkness being the ruins of the lost civilisation).

I really like Sonic Adventure 1, but it is kind of sad to see how the story changed, because this classic Sonic world sounds so much more interesting than Station Square.

Fingers crossed that Mania lore ;) does not contradict this backstory.

Sonic 1 & 2 on Game Gear weren't great since the smaller screen made it much easier to run into things and die. They looked much more playable on a Master System screen. Also the music was pretty good - Bridge Zone from Sonic 1 in particular is one of those hidden gem tracks:

Yeah, I got a Power Base Converter a while back and began collecting some Master System games and I have Sonic 1, 2 and Chaos for it.

It's a shame Triple Trouble never came out for the SMS. Tails' Adventure was also decent. Sonic Blast is kinda lovely and let's not talk about Sonic Labyrinth.

I got rid of my Game Gear a long time ago however and I haven't really had any incentive to get a new one. Especially when the screens are mostly going bad at this point.

Hahahaha I actually really like that aesthetic, both for CD and Chaotix. It's very original and unique. I hate that rubber band gameplay of Chaotix though, urgh.

I'll also grant that level design itself if pretty weak in CD. And those special stages freaking suck. I think they were done that way just because Sega must've been butthurt over the technical capabilities of scaling and rotation of the SNES. But I think the Sonic Mania team is absolutely brilliant and they could do a lot of cool stuff with CD material.

And btw I freaking hate blue spheres special stages. The only special stages which weren't annoying were 2's, but granted, they were also pretty easy to clear.

The Metal Sonic race is a perfect example of why people hate the level design in Sonic CD. In other games you had all kinds of little areas to speed up, be they loops, slopes or tunnels, and generally didn't get slammed to a halt by rocks or spikes, with platforming segments providing moments to switch direction or otherwise slow down momentarily. Metal Sonic gives you no speed-up segments, tons of spikes just randomly scattered about, raised sections of floor for no reason, little hillocks that prevent any kind of momentum being gained and an enemy that just shoots past you and takes you out as he does. It absolutely blows, especially compared to the animatic at the end of the game showing the two of them barrelling along separate paths at full speed. Easily one of the worst designed levels in a Sonic game.

Counterpoint to the above: the music for racing Metal Sonic is :krad: and beating him feels awesome once you manage to pull it off, you have to time your jumps just right to keep your speed and if you can stay in front of him the race gets significantly easier.

Also re: special stage chat, I'd probably have to say my favorites are S3K's, but maybe that's just because I have them all memorized already :v:

So it'd go like this for me:
1. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
2. Sonic CD
3. Sonic 2
4. Sonic 1

Which I am now realizing is pretty much how much I like those games individually, as well? I like the Knuckles' Chaotix ones too, but I like Sonic 2 more than Chaotix in general. Having to rely on a crane game to pick your partner and the fact that you more or less do levels in a random order are my biggest gripes with the game, it feels like there's not really any sense of progression since the difficulty of the levels jumps around a lot, and then suddenly the game ends, there's not really any narrative that you see going on in the levels like in every other Sonic game where the last few levels at least always feel like you're in a factory made for killing you specifically i.e. Scrap Brain, Death Egg, Metallic Madness, Wing Fortress, etc.

Actually let's rank our favorite chaos emerald special stages??

1: Knuckles Chaotix, innovative and very memorable. poo poo got really open and cool in the last levels
2: Sonic CD, not perfect but the concept and visuals own
3: Sonic 3D Blast [Saturn], absolutely the best take on the half-pipe. Awesome jazz music to boot
4: Sonic Heroes, this one is so dumb and broken I kind of love what a mess it is
5: Sonic 3&K, not particularly fun to play but I'm really good at it and I rarely fail at it
6: Sonic 1, can be very unpredictable at times and are full of leaps of faith later on. Very stressful and annoying
7: Sonic 2, I hate everything about this and its impossible barring rote memorization difficulty for the last 3 emeralds. Hate this one.

Also I know Heroes isn't a classic game but I just felt like including it so include whatever you want to, sonic friends :unsmith:

The Sonic 2 special stages require both foreknowledge and near perfect execution. They're not impossible, but I knew that of the fifteen or so times I'd get to them over the course of the game, I'd never win enough to ever get the prize.

There's are parts in the last couple sonic two stages where every ring is precious & you have a pattern that goes line of rings on the left, then right, then left, then right, then right, then left, then left and you can't see them coming cause it's up hill. Then they do a lot of rings or bombs while going uphill that you can't see coming :/
