Gazpacho posted:welp i'm not watching the show but from the reports coming in i get the impression that lynch isn't going for fan service and is trashing the whole "quirky little town" aspect of the original, c/d? the original twin peaks was david lynch's vision when he was 25 years younger, tailored so it could air on one of the big three television networks back when that meant something this is twin peaks as made by david lynch 25 years later, when he's older, crankier, and more sure of himself as an artist, who convinced a cable channel (so he can swear and show tits and gore) to pay for 18 hours of whatever he wanted to film there's tons of fanservice in it but this is still pure distilled lynch which, it turns out, is absurdist and bugfuck. people are going to piss and moan about it no matter what it is because it's never going to live up to 25 years of cult expectations, but it is really good if you like david lynch

Manchild King posted:If I didn't like the original 1990 show, will I enjoy this new season? Depends. Did you like the movie prequel Fire Walk With Me? It feels more like that. People whine about its slow pace but the new season is definitely heavy on the visual storytelling so if you're a fan of dialogue it's probably not for you.

I haven't watched Fire Walk With Me. I only saw Twin Peaks for the first time about two years ago, I think that's probably a big part of why I don't "get" it. But thanks for the Ernest reply.

Here is my hot take. Coop's arc is so far Lynch's own. Dougey is our perception of Lynch born of the original show with quirky characters and whatnot, as hinted at by his loud suits and wild anachronistic hairstyle. And Lynch, who's spent some time out of business in his own Another Place doing weird poo poo, now returns, wins a jackpot by bagging a full season of the show again, but is expected by some to deliver the same thing as 25 years ago, as he fumbles to meet expectations, barely even remembering how to direct, the language of film, after all those years. Bad Coop is what some more 'hardcore' audience expect from the show - pain and suffering for the sake of themselves, the darkness that Lynch is also famous for thanks to his other works. They don't need, they want. Not going to go through excessive scene-by-scene analysis, as it really wouldn't add anything to my interpretation, but it's all there on the surface. I don't think it's too far-fetched all things considered, so CineD wouldn't probably be on board with this reading. But mainly lol at Windows Surface product placement.

Which coincidentally is the name of the production company for the show. Later when he's in the black lodge, he's told that he was 'manufactured' for a purpose. Which is Lynch's surreal way of delivering a narrative in a totally fourth wall breaking way. This show is meta as gently caress and it's awesome. I also lol'd at David Duchovny's scene.

I have a question... Why does Coop have TWO doppelgangers? Why are there essentially 3 Coops (2 now) instead of good-and-trapped Coop vs evil-and-free Coop? I guess I'm on board with that, but I stepped away from the tv briefly as I guess Dougie showed up and for a while just thought it was a weird flash forward of good Coop. This is akin to Bill Pullman turning into Balthazar Getty and even the other characters wondering what the gently caress.

I think evil coop just made a golem out of evil fart gas or something to get sucked into the black lodge instead of him when his time was up and gently caress over good cooper when he got out.

Every post, review, and thinkpiece is "aww man, this is full-on Lynch, I think people are going to hate this but I (a man of refined tastes) loving love it", and actually nobody is saying they don't like it because the people who wouldn't like it knew not to watch it to begin with.

I don't know why they had to go with two brothers Truman just because the original Harry wasn't available. Donna was played by a different actress in FWWM, and ostensibly Harry Truman could look like anything after 25 years. But they went through the trouble of introducing his brother, who is basically the same character, in the official novel before season three and stuff. Lynch loves the theme of duality, so who knows.

As far as the show is concerned, it's basically no trouble at all to introduce him as a separate character; it takes like 5 seconds. The recasting in FWWM was kind of unavoidable by virtue of it being a prequel.

I thought The Man from Another Place was dead, but actually he passed on the new series because of money and also had a big meltdown on Facebook where he accused Lynch of raping his own daughter and having Jack Nance murdered and also said Twin Peaks was boring So anyway, that's why he's a brain on a tree now

So is there anything in season 3 so far that's like the red room scenes at the end of season 2? Should I watch any of season 3 or should I just go rewatch that? Full disclosure, watched all of season 1 and season 2 after seeing the red room poo poo out of context. But I remember finding it barely watchable.
