Predators vs Penguins would be ok, even with the Penguins banged up. If it's Predators vs Senators I probably won't watch at all until there's a potential series-clinching game.

You have to watch the final series, because it's the last wheeze of NHL hockey until October. Gotta delay the withdrawl symptoms as long as possible.

ElwoodCuse posted:People have been throwing the Penguins in the grave since the start of the Columbus series, Penguins fans included Hey, Pens fans weren't doomsaying in the first round. The Blue Jackets? That one was easy money. But we should have lost to the Caps. They were the better team, and they outplayed us. We squeaked through that round on puck luck, and maybe Fleury pushing one final dagger into the Cap's heart on his way out. The Pens are in a weird spot for someone who's watched them all year. Last year it seemed likely they would win from the way they played. Passes were connecting every game, shots were raining down on the net, they were holding opponents to under 30 every game. Basically, they were doing all the things that you're told you'll win if you do. This year though, the playoffs have been very hit or miss. No where is this more evident than against Ottawa, where we're trading 5-1 losses and 7-0 wins. There are shadows of the team from last year, but interspersed are these bad games where nothing is working. It's just hard to have the same kind of confidence in this team compared to last year. Obviously fans want them to win, but we're also more afraid they won't.

Probably the best Cup Finals of my lifetime were like 94 (Rangers/Canucks), 00 (Devils/Stars), 04 (Lightning/Flames), 06 (Hurricanes/Oilers), 09 (Penguins/Red Wings), and 11 (Bruins/Canucks). I don't even think it's fair to say they are defense-focused under Lavvy, it's just their strong suit. And the strength of their D corp is in transitioning the puck out of the zone and jumping in on offense, which are pretty fun things. Hopefully they can work on their goddamn inexcusably bad and dumb PP in this next week though.

Yeah calling the Predators D focused is weird, like every Lavi team they're a get up and go group -- when they're on it they have a really aggressive forecheck (Ardvidsson and Aberg terrorizing Hainsey/Maatta/etc will be amusing), and while their D is good, they're all offensive guys who like to push the pace/jump into the play. Their neutral zone play last night was actually really bad. The Ducks were carving them up every time they got a clean breakout. I think they'll have a tough time with Malkin especially, but if they can get on the Penguins D like Washington did, they'll have a chance. I'm starting to think the PP problem might be sorta connected to the first part of that having read Dellow's tweets about defenseman-vs-forward shooting % in PP scenarios. Caps might have a similar thing going on with Carlson, which brought it to my attention.

I think they'll have a tough time with Malkin especially, but if they can get on the Penguins D like Washington did, they'll have a chance. I think this is something to watch because it seemed like when they were struggling in the regular season they were just a total mess getting through the neutral zone. I think their main goal for the top 6 at least has been to put pucks into empty NZ space either off the boards or a lob out of the DZ (which they do an insane amount of) and having speedy forwards win the race to pick it up. Losing Fiala hurts that strategy a bit but hopefully Aberg can be a threat there too. The Ducks seemed to do a good job at times of slowing that transition down and then, I think, forechecking pretty aggressively when the Preds were attempting a controlled breakout, with 2 or 3 Ducks inside the blue line, which often lead to the Preds attempting a stretch pass which was usually at best tipped in for a dump. glynnenstein posted:I'm starting to think the PP problem might be sorta connected to the first part of that having read Dellow's tweets about defenseman-vs-forward shooting % in PP scenarios. Caps might have a similar thing going on with Carlson, which brought it to my attention. Yeah it's weird, their PP formation doesn't really seem to be dynamic at all and they seem content to pass the puck around the low-risk areas looking for a money point shot but it doesn't seem to really do much to force the PKers out of position. Neal, Arvidsson, and Forsberg can all shoot the puck well, I wish they would try to work in some opportunities for them in the home plate area. Also their PP zone entries are kind of weird in that it seems like particularly Josi will pass up what looks like a likely controlled entry for a drop pass to push the PKers back a little more.

Here's a funny little game moment of last night: when Sissons scored the Preds' fourth goal, I immediately took my hat off my head and then paused and was super confused. I turned to Thufir and said "why is no one throwing their hats?" before resuming screaming and high-fiving people. His second goal had been announced as Aberg's and I had noticed it was Sissons but didn't notice there had not been a correction announced. I was going too crazy to think about it much longer but then the arena announcer confirmed the hat trick and all was right and now I need a new hat. Now I also just realized Thufir was wearing that hat Tugboat was wearing in my avatar so I hope the power of Tugboat, Golden Dog, has now blessed the ice for the Final.

Another SCF, another day that Kesler and Bieksa don't get a cup. The hockey gods are smiling down upon us. And Bieksa trying to start a fight in a guaranteed loss in the last seconds of a game/series. What a giant piece of poo poo. I loved watching him walk the tunnel, tossing his teammates sticks and smashing his against the wall. Pretty sure it was all a strategy to not shake hands after the game. In all reality, I would personally prefer to see the senators beat the pens because I'm tired of seeing the pens keep going to the cup. I would like to see Karlsson advance because I really like the guy, but I also really like Subban. I think the Karlsson/Subban story could be nice to watch unfold. BUT I think the most exciting hockey would come from pens/preds as well as ratings. Oh well, go preds. Its fun to see a new team win for once, and even better to see that the city is really getting behind them and super enthusiastic. ***EDIT** Also, this was great. http://screengrabber.deadspin.com/nick-ritchie-tags-viktor-arvidsson-with-the-mark-of-the-1795450435 Verman fucked around with this message at 19:13 on May 23, 2017 |
