Cool Run was 15% before, and it's 10 now so even with full Cool Run from the Ops tree you still need about -5% Heat Gen out of Firepower to get roughly the same cooling you had pre-patch.

And the locusts run hot anyway, that's always been the case. Their whole schtick is being able to sweep in, partially core out someone, run away to cool down for a bit, and then come back later to finish the job. It's rare that you can get a target alone and have time to pick it apart, and generally the locust doesn't do well in sustained fights, especially if the enemy gets assistance of any kind. Fat targets like dire wolves that are left totally alone are exceptional cases where you can close out a kill without any risk, but anything else generally isn't worth sticking around to try to finish due to the amount of armor you'll lose.

If you're using an AC/20, you only need to hit the target once. If the target's still standing, you oughta be somewhere else anyway.
Victor trip report: I was being dumb so I bought the 9S as the first Assault I pilot and it's kicking rad. AC20 + 3SRM6+Artemis on a STD, armor-quirked agile chassis make for a hell of a brawler. Played two matches, 700 damage each without knowing what I'm doing. It's like a baby Atlas build.

Might have to try it with the standard. I have been running the same thing and it puts out a lot of damage but I still have the old XL380 in there. Even with the full survival tree giving it over 100 ST health it's just fragile unless people accidentally hit your CT a lot. Still dishes out a lot of damage though, and I would say it's borderline viable even with the XL.

Have seen the same build but with two LPLs instead of the AC20 already starting to become a bit meta though, several of them around and being talked about.

Do they ever tweak this game a little at a time, i.e. "X mech is generally not used, so let's give it and only it a few bonuses and see if we can fix that" sort of thing?

They do quirk updates like that with chassis as a whole, but generally not with individual variants. Sometimes they way overdo it, like when the blackjack was god-king of mechs, but every now and then they get it right and make a mech playable.

The vindicator is a good example of a garbage mech that has some decent quirks that make it competitive with its counterparts.

PGI sledgehammers the game balance 2-3 times a year but still manages to miss blatantly awful outliers like the Awesome or Spider heroes. Basically dont rely on something bad ever being fixed and dont hope something good will ever stay that way.

aniviron
Sep 11, 2014

A few times they have said "Oh we promise guys we're gonna do iterative balance instead of increasing artillery damage & splash 400% in one patch!" This was back when there were no clan mech quirks and a lot of the outliers like the Summoner were irredeemable garbage fire mechs. So they gave the Adder, Kitfox, Summoner, etc all 1-2% MG rate of fire quirks, bumped them up to 2-3% in the next patch and then forgot about it for six months and said "gently caress it we don't have the patience" and went back to business as usual.

I Remember...
Triple AMS Nova with 2x AMS Overload can lock down 2 IS missile boats at the same time. It's pretty neat.

SPL Nova is still frightening to round a corner into. I'm not sure if they are running cooler than they used to with every heat node you can get, but if you liked running them before, they are still pretty solid.

Why does it take so long to load into the mech garage. Starting the game or leaving a match I always end up looking at their wait-spinner for what feels like several minutes while the thing loads. I don't get this poo poo in other games (i5, 8 gigs, 1070, ssd, etc), and it gets frustrating.

aniviron

It's based on the amount of poo poo in your inventory and your connection to PGI's servers. Has nothing to do with computer speed at all.

You're too slow to get to most of the fight as the enemy team is slaughtered.

I'm finding that maybe you don't need so much kinetic burst or hard brake in brawling cheetahs; when do you ever stop running? I guess theoretically you can poke from around corners but that's a dangerous game to play even with max hard brake.

You're not loving kidding about the urbie. I chased an ACH around in one match last night just mangling him with my ac10. It was loving hilarious, he kept flailing around in an utter panic while this 90kph trashcan stalked him relentlessly. I got a supply cache out of that match and that gave me a discoball that now proudly adorns my urbie cockpit

Hello MWO thread, long time no see! I was cleaning out my Dropbox and found an old text file from 1.5yrs ago of a list about when I hosted that goonhouse event that one time.

I figured it'd be a good idea to copy-paste its contents here before I delete it for you guys in case you ever want to have a handy-dandy list of dumb gimmicks to do for fun in this videogame at some point going forward:

quote:

List of gimmicks for the goonhouse this Saturday (2016 Jan 9):

Anyone can do these:

12v12 in the basement of HPG Manifold with whatever 'mech
"Protect the baby": Atlases only + 1 Urbanmech per team
Teamkill until only 1 left, then 1v1 between the sole survivors
"Honor duels": 1v1s in a 'ring'
12v12 in the basement of HPG Manifold with Atlases only!
Light mechs take turns trying to 1v1 an Assault
2v2 tag team, where only 1 mech per team can fight at a time

Requires purchased 'mechs from everybody:

LRM boats only (no ECM allowed)
"Boss battle": 1 Atlas vs 12 unarmored lights
Only a cheap, unarmored light mech with just Machine Guns
Flamer Locusts only
"Mad Max/Death Race": unarmored [lights] with Flamers+MGs only
Unarmored lights with only one AC/2, ammo, and Jump Jets
Everyone has to choose a build that someone else has to run
"Boss battle": 12 Urbanmechs vs 1 Atlas

I've gotten used to playing with 1 ams on my locust now. 2 ams is nice, but I don't like the reduction in firepower (I have to pull out a medium laser to fit it) I have to take to get it. Without it i don't get nearly as much damage, and almost no kills.

I bought a Panther 9R a while back knowing that when the skill tree came, I wouldn't have to master two more. Have to say it's definitely fared well post-tree; unlike the majority of other garbage lights, it retained almost all of its quirks, and wasn't much affected by the engine decoupling.
