A little late to this part of the discussion but my understanding of Anubis showing up was that Laura was gods-blessed/connected and this grants her incredible luck (everything she wants falls into her lap; her boss says she has this incredible rate of return on her customers and the house wins more with her; she has this weird relationship with the cards themselves, etc.) and that the god just turned out to be Anubis. That she's also deeply depressed/suicidal and refuses to believe in anything is a cruel irony, to be sure, but Laura Moon the character/Emily Browning project this almost mystical aura that gives her an otherworldly feel, even as she's so obviously flawed and human. But any interpretation is valid etc. (I love this show you guys!!!)

I feel like the TV Laura Moon is way deeper than the book Laura Moon and there's a lot going on with her. She works at a new world house of worship dedicated to Anubis. No matter what she tells herself, she has a little tiny sliver of her mind that believes cats can see ghosts or the dead or whatever her grandmother said. She's also invariably tied into Mr. Wednesday's plan, which makes her god-blessed. She's also essentially worshiped by Shadow. He's happy to live in a cardboard box under the freeway if it means he can talk to her everyday. She also possesses Mad Sweeney's golden sun coin, which gives her power. She's something special, that's for sure.

Fuller and Gaimen both frequently don't explicitly spell out backstory like that. Just a snip, and if you know you know and if you're curious a quick internet search figures it out.
