I mean, yeah. But.. it was a suicide attempt. I can't explain it to you anymore because it's such a black and white scene.

Some io9 article said Gaiman corroborated that it was a suicide attempt too if you really want to delve into trying to prove your interpretation of it? But I mean... it was so incredibly, painfully obviously, a suicide attempt.

They were just gonna smoke a bowl together, calm down. Anubis is super into huffing bug spray, hence why he was "committed" to her. Do you think he just keeps a hot tub in the desert for swimming in?

A little late to this part of the discussion but my understanding of Anubis showing up was that Laura was gods-blessed/connected and this grants her incredible luck (everything she wants falls into her lap; her boss says she has this incredible rate of return on her customers and the house wins more with her; she has this weird relationship with the cards themselves, etc.) and that the god just turned out to be Anubis.

That she's also deeply depressed/suicidal and refuses to believe in anything is a cruel irony, to be sure, but Laura Moon the character/Emily Browning project this almost mystical aura that gives her an otherworldly feel, even as she's so obviously flawed and human.

But any interpretation is valid etc. (I love this show you guys!!!)

I feel like the TV Laura Moon is way deeper than the book Laura Moon and there's a lot going on with her. She works at a new world house of worship dedicated to Anubis. No matter what she tells herself, she has a little tiny sliver of her mind that believes cats can see ghosts or the dead or whatever her grandmother said. She's also invariably tied into Mr. Wednesday's plan, which makes her god-blessed. She's also essentially worshiped by Shadow. He's happy to live in a cardboard box under the freeway if it means he can talk to her everyday. She also possesses Mad Sweeney's golden sun coin, which gives her power. She's something special, that's for sure.

I read the book ages ago and I honestly forgot when I started watching the TV show that she was an active character :effort: but I love this new weird...something special-y...incarnation of her. Good work, writers.

For me Shadow and Laura's relationship was one of the shittier parts of the book, and "Puppy" was such a weird pet name. I'm glad Audrey called out that their relationship is kinda hosed up.

I liked puppy (or at least the story behind it) as a pet name. I don't remember Laura being this lovely of person in the book though.

That's okay, her being lovely means Audrey gets to be lovely right back at her and holy gently caress I love Audrey. She's golden. Her burns are far more devastating than the damage Laura did to the weird clockwork orange goons.

Does she though? Her arc didn't mention it explicitly. She got yanked away from Anubis, 2 eps back when he dug it up, I thought it looked like the coin had burned through not only the coffin lid, but into the pillow as well.

Not doubting, just wondering what hints I missed in the text.

She got out of the grave right after the funeral. After the coin and before Shadow got hung on his way home.

Yeah, that seems a bit weird. Maybe when it burned through her, some luck rubbed off and dragged her back.

Her request to Shadow for more bug spray implied that this was an on-going thing. I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that she was getting high and wasn't too worried about the risks, or that the risks enhanced it for her.

Nah that was a symbol that even with Shadow her life still wasn't complete and she still contemplated suicide.

Which then was confirmed by what she said directly to him, about needing to do the heist. He was happy, with her he didn't need anything else. She felt for him... but it wasn't the same.

happy cat

Text: Laura has a magic lucky coin in her skull and the god that catches her literally says, "The circumstances of your death commit me." Someone pulls the Anubis lore that corroborates. Fuller and Gaimen both frequently don't explicitly spell out backstory like that. Just a snip, and if you know you know and if you're curious a quick internet search figures it out.

Goons: Well it was really about the place she worked and oh yeah she handled black cards and stuff who cares what the character himself says about why he got her and oh by the way he's never been shown to lie but also some dirt is a perfectly spherical burned hole
