Someone I know is arguing how good this AHCA is because it means a bunch of trump supporters will suffer. He is aware that other non-lovely people will suffer too but he is covered by his employer as are the people he cares about. When I told him that is the same "gently caress you got mine" lovely attitude that the republican party holds that ends up culminating in these kinds of legislative abortions he said "No its different and nuanced." End my life...

He is moving the Catholic Church in a positive direction. That's a good thing and should be celebrated. God is not actually real so the Pope does not actually have magic powers. He's doing what a mortal man can do with an ancient and sprawling institution. Yeah. I like what he's doing. Almost everything I see is him saying poo poo like "Stop raping kids," and "Maybe don't hate the gays, God loves them too." poo poo like that and it's awesome. A huge organization like that won't change over night but everything I've seen is very positive and steps in the right direction. Of course if the pattern holds he will be replaced by some crazy person who starts a literal crusade ala Van Helsing. (Obama -> Trump)

He's doing what a mortal man can do with an ancient and sprawling institution. He's not really doing much at all. Try living in a country where the State is owed several billion in restitution from Catholic orders for decades of child abuse, and mass graves of little baby skeletons are being discovered in septic tanks. Like hundreds of little baby skeletons. Francis isn't doing or saying poo poo about any of that , even if he talks out both sides of his mouth about how maybe gays don't deserve hellfire (although gayness is still bad of course).

Francis is modern, properly educated guy with real life experiences in charge of a massive bureaucracy that sits atop 1.2 billion people, a large portion of which literally still believe in demonic possession and the power of sacred relics. If he came out tomorrow and gave the opening speech from Young Pope there'd be a literal revolt in the vatican and some millennia old rule would be invoked that would leave him drawn and quartered in like antioch or something. He's already basically come out in favor of the theory of evolution which even twenty years ago would have been unheard of. hopefully he can get enough hutzpah to legalize contraceptives because using the catholic church to teach and disperse loving condoms would solve a whole slew of problems. more than likely we'll get female members of the clergy and there's an outside shot of letting priests marry. I mean poo poo the lutherans let their priests marry and you can convert as a member of the clergy to catholicism and keep your wife like who cares at this point

Yeah, and he frequently espouses leftist economic opinions and talks about how it's fundamentally immoral to hoard wealth. There used to be a much bigger faction of leftists Catholics in the US and if he can reinvigorate them we'd have a very different political landscape.

Catholics have been down with evolution for quite a while, much longer than 20 years. It's only really Evangelical Protestants that are into creationism. But you're right, he's doing a good job of steering the church in a more progressive direction and he can't radically change such a huge institution with almost two thousand years of inertia behind it. I particularly like how vocal he's been about climate change and the environment, but also things like refugees.

FizFashizzle posted:He's already basically come out in favor of the theory of evolution which even twenty years ago would have been unheard of. I agree with the rest of your post but this is more complicated than you suggest. The Catholic church has accepted evolution for a few decades now and most Catholic schools teach it in their science curriculum. Although, ironically, a lot of Catholic folks I've met say evolution isn't real even though it's been part of Catholic teaching for awhile now. edit: whoops, I see this is now part of a dogpile
