Quantum of Phallus posted:Where is the Matrix In the toilet where it belongs. Trunko posted:How is the fifth element an action movie Fifth Element is an action movie with action movie structure that has (a lot of) sci-fi elements (see also Total Recall). Badass warrior is pulled out of retirement for one last mission to get the girl and save the world with his wisecracking sidekick and bumbling bureaucrats holding him back from blowing up everything etc. It's definitely an action film. It's practically Commando in space. Kinda like how Predator and Aliens dabble in horror but are capital A Action. Unrelated, I can't loving wait for Atomic Blonde. That new trailer is so fucken dope. Speaking of action movies, are Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves the last of the action stars who really throw themselves into the role? Like, Cruise still does his stunts himself, despite closing in on 60, and Reeves actually knows kung fu and trained to shoot guns real well for John Wick. But when I think of other modern actors (outside of martial arts flicks, natch) only glib performances in front of green screens or sudden, carefully shot moments of violence with not a huge amount of physical effort come to mind. E: Oh yeah, I guess the peeps in F&F are legit, probably. Mordja fucked around with this message at 15:12 on May 25, 2017 |

Are they gently caress. Not a chance they're doing the stunts in those. Tom Cruise might genuinely be the last "movie star" in the old school sense of the word.

Tom Cruise is the only white dude I know of that still does his own stunts. But China / Hong Kong / Thailand / Indonesia are bursting at the seams with insane daredevils. e: Tom Hardy doesn't do ALL of his own stunts, but he's pretty brave in doing a lot of poo poo. Also, points for getting roided up to play Bane.

Hardy got pretty beefy for Bronson too and he was quite a bit scarier in that movie than as Bane, imo.

I think Keaneu did almost all of his own stunts in both John Wick movies. Not sure about the Matrix.

I watched John Wick 2 last night and was disappointed. The first movie felt really fresh and kept moving along whereas this one felt stale and almost no action occurred in the first half, all setup. It did get rolling eventually but then it was killing endless gangsters who kept spawning and no actual plan other than John keeps getting jumped while he staggers around NYC inexplicably still living. By the time he got to the end bit I just wanted it to be over. Also Morpheus shows up just so people can say "also morpheus shows up!"

My favorite part of both John Wick movies is these professional assassins and bodyguards like closing to point blank range to engage someone with a ranged weapon. So many of them come from what can only be behind the camera and as soon as they come into frame or even slightly before is when they get tagged. It's very, very aware it's a movie.

That's what makes them fun. They're not heady or philosophical, they're just movies made for fun. They're insane spectacle films that're only marginally less over-the-top than Michael Bay films.

Notice how in my stupid low effort joke I ended by saying "well maybe this isn't two bad" and then I trailed of with some dot dot dots to show my falling inflection. This was to communicate that I was uncertain about BotW but was willing to give it a chance. As it turns out, I now really enjoy BotW and watch them when they com out! I didn't include that detail in my joke though because I thought it would take out to long to type out, and that no one would read it. And as this paragraph of text shows, I was right on both counts! Haha
