What's your point? You go back 80ish years in Japanese politics and they were beheading captured American soldiers. I don't see them returning to that. 50 years ago people were marching for equal rights in the south. If you have to reach back over a century to draw parallels to today, it might be because the actions of the present are indefnisble

Edit: Cain killed Abel, and maybe we'll never get past that as a society? Who can say....

Perhaps, instead of thinking of our current detente as a natural evolution, you should consider it an anomaly, and that our political struggles being coupled with physical violence is actually the normal state of affairs. Like peace in Europe, it's worth working towards, but it isn't how things have been for most of history, or are guaranteed to be in the future.

Hand wringing about how our democracy can exist when our elected officials are committing violence is odd, since that's how we rolled for a few hundred years.

This country by and large hews conservative, it is a hilarious pipedream that an avowed socialist would win or even seriously contest the presidential election. Obama was about as liberal as a president can get and still be acceptable to the masses. Besides which he had a huge abundance of charisma which definitely helped. Bernie had neither of those, he was far to the left of Obama, and he had the charisma of a piece of toast.

Single payer is polling well, gay marriage went from fringe pipe dream to something conservatives and centrists are busily pretending they were always for, weed getting normalized, etc.

In the time before Nixon, (pre 1969,) being black was a de facto crime in large parts of the United States, and being gay was an actual crime, and everyone south of the Mason-Dixon was a pro-union Democrat, so I'm not really sure that 2017 ideas of "liberal" and "conservative" map to even the recent past.

He showed up late and unprepared with one-note speeches and pulled 40% against Clinton

If you were right, he would've pulled 5% and you wouldn't be pretending it was a fair fight and some kind of referendum of New Deal-type populism

Edit: Campaign Obama was to President Obama's left, BTW

The thing is, if he had gone up against obama in that, he WOULD have pulled max 5% of the vote (literally only the FULL SOCIALISM NOW/Communist Party USA types). The only reason he polled as high as he did was how laughably out of touch Hillary was with the democratic base. Obama had his finger firmly on the pulse of the democratic party and he also knew how to sell it to swing voters, which is something neither bernie or hillary had.

The DREAM act was extremely the opposite of a conservative policy, as was creating the CFPB.

Using technology to kill enemies from thousands of miles away instead of sending in ARE TROOPS is fairly "liberal" in terms of foreign policy.

I'm not arguing one way or another here, but I was thinking, does anyone know why extreme racism (especially antisemitism) and misogyny seems to be common in schizophrenics? Same reason why they wear tinfoil hats and listen to Infowars. A huge international Soviet-Nazi-Jewish-Something conspiracy is what actually makes them crazy, not a mental disorder. If their medication don't work or makes them into a drooling zombie, its the fault of the Jewish Bankers and the Fourth Reich trying to keep them down from exposing the truth!

Isn't indiscriminate murder enough reason to say someone was clearly psychologically disturbed? I mean, no one is out there defending the Manchester bomber's mental health and we can probably all agree he would have benefited from intervention by a mental health professional, but that doesnt discount that what he did was terrorism. This Portland guy may be crazier than all hell, that doesn't mean he can't commit a racially or religiously motivated crime.
